Step 2: Explore
Tie a paperclip to a piece of string, then suspend it above one of the wand
magnets.
What do you observe as you move the paperclip back and forth above the magnet
from one end to the other?
How do the different parts of the magnet (ends, middle, sides) interact with the
paperclip?
Is the strength of the interaction the same for all parts of the magnet?
Make a drawing in your science notebook to show where you found any variations
in the strength of the interaction.
Repeat this exploration using different shaped magnets. Place a piece of tape or
sticker on the part(s) of each magnet you believe to be the strongest. Make a
sketch in your science notebook of the magnets you used and indicate where each
was strongest.
In August, you were provided with iron filings.
Use the iron filings for each of the different shaped magnets you placed tape on in
the previous activity—do the filings cluster in the same locations that you placed
2. the tape? Make a sketch below of what you observe for at least two magnets with
different shapes.
Step 3: Explain
The strongest parts of a magnet are referred to as “poles”.
Are the poles of a magnet always located at the “ends”? Explain.
Do any of the magnets you observe have just one pole?
Do any of the magnets you examined have more than two poles?
Record the answers to these questions in your science notebook.
Step 4: Elaborate
1. Create a magnetic compass (see Make Your Own Compass article).
2. After creating your compass, in your science notebook record your thinking to
this question: How are compasses able to find magnetic north/south using the
Earth's magnetic field?
Step 5: Evaluate
Imagine a magnet is discovered that appears to have three poles. What would you
expect the iron filings pattern to look like in this case? Make a sketch below.
Take a photo of your science notebook from the Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and
Evaluate phases of this learning cycle. Upload pictures of the Explore, Explain,
Elaborate, and Evaluate phases to Canvas for the M1 Assignment.
