2. 2-the Freely suspended magnet always takes
fixed direction :
• Suspend the bar magnet from its centre with a
thread fixed to a wooden stand
• Move the magnet then leave it to stabilize again
and repeat the step.
Observation :
One pole of the magnet tries to search for the north direction of the
earth,
While the other pole tries to search for the south direction of the
earth.
Conclusion :
The freely suspended magnet always takes a fixed direction which is
(north-south direction) .
4. 3-Like(similar ) poles repel and unlike
(different) poles attract.
When we approach the north pole of magnet to the
north pole of the other magnet they (repel )
But when we approach the south pole of magnet to
the north pole of magnet they (attract )
5. Think and answer :
5
Choose the correct answer
1. The similar magnetic poles…. each other.
a. attract b. repel c. do not affect d. replace
2. The unlike magnetic poles……… each other.
a. Attract b. repel c. do not affect d. eat
Write the scientific term:
1-The pole of the magnet that repels with the north pole of anothermagnet.
……………………………...
2-The pole of the magnet that attracts the north pole of another magnet.
……..……………………..….
North pole
South pole
6. 4-The magnet is surrounded by magnetic field
Magnetic field
The space around the magnet in which the
effect of the magnet appears
The magnetic force : it is the ability of magnet to
attract magnetic materials existed in its field .
(invisible force )
So , we use iron filings to see the
magnetic field that is formed by the
effect of magnetic force.
8. The compass:
A small light needle magnet spins freely
around fixed axis .
The north pole of magnet points to the
north direction
The south pole of magnet points to the
south direction
So Compass is used to determine the
four main geographical directions.
(G.R)
The English doctor William gilbert made a
magnetized needle which is used in making
compass
9. Think and answer :
9
choose the correct answer:
1-. The compass contains ...................
a. horse-shoe magnet b. bar magnet
c. small light magnetic needle d. ring magnet
G.R
1- Compass is used to determine the four main geographic directions.
Because it has needle magnet where The north pole of it points to the
north direction
The south pole of it points to the south direction
2- when you approach a magnet to iron nails ,the most of them are
attracted to the two poles of the magnet.
Because the attraction force of the magnet is concentrated at the two
poles of magnet.
10. Discovery of magnet :
2000 years ago, Ancient Greeks
found a type of black rocks in an
area named Magnesia
These rocks have a natural force to
attract materials made of iron
They named this attraction force
the magnetism and named the
black rock the Natural magnet
12. Types of magnet :
Natural magnet
• A black rock
• it is one of iron ores
called magnetite
Artificial magnet
• A magnet made by man
• It has different shapes and
sizes such as ring, bar,
horse shoe and needle
needle
U-shaped
bar
ring
13. Magnetic materials Non magnetic materials
The materials that are attracted to
the magnet
Such as iron, nickel and cobalt
and steel
The materials that are not
attracted to the magnet
Such as wood, glass, copper,
gold, plastic, chalk
Aluminium , leather.
•Classification of materials
14. Think and answer :
14
Give reasons for the following:
1-Iron, cobalt and nickel are called magnetic materials.
...........................................................................................................
2-Wood, copper and glass are called non-magnetic materials.
……………………………………………………………………………………………
Complete the following :
1-Magnetic materials such as……………..,…………..and………………
2- Natural magnet is one of iron ore is called ……… …………………
3- Artificial magnet has different shapes such as…………………
…and……………
Because they can be attracted to magnet
Because they can`t be attracted to
magnet
Cobaltiron Nickel
bar ring…
Horse shoe
magnetite
15. Properties of the magnet:
The magnets has two poles
Freely suspended magnet always takes fixed
direction
Like poles repel and dislike poles attract
The magnet surrounded by magnetic filed

17. 1-The magnets has two poles
When we approach the magnet to the metallic paper clips
Most of the paper clips are attracted to the ends of the
magnet
The magnetic pole :
An area of the magnet that has the most powerful magnetic force
The magnetic force : it is the ability of magnet to attract magnetic materials existed in
its field . (invisible force )
