God asks St. Francis about the lack of colorful plants and flowers that God created in the USA. St. Francis explains that suburban homeowners call native plants "weeds" and replace them with grass, which they consider boring but devote great effort to growing and maintaining through fertilizing, frequent mowing, watering, and disposing of clippings. God is further surprised to learn that homeowners also rake and dispose of leaves in autumn instead of letting them decompose naturally and enhance the soil. God decides not to think about the suburban landscaping practices anymore.

Facebook has released an application called Facebook Home that changes how Android phones operate by replacing the home screen and lock screen with a live News Feed. It allows messaging through Chat Heads that overlay other applications. Facebook Home will be available on a variety of Android devices through Google Play. This move shows Facebook's ambition to dominate mobile platforms as on desktop, potentially building large customer data pools. However, it may backfire by alienating users concerned about data access or prompting Google to limit Facebook's access to Android as a competitor.
Google has announced plans to roll out "Google Shopping", a new shopping advertising format on Google search results pages. The new format will use product feed data from advertisers to display more prominent shopping ads with images and product information. This represents an effort by Google to further monetize its search platform and reinvigorate growth, as it is no longer dependent on traditional text-based search ads alone. Initial trials of the product listing ads that will power Google Shopping have shown above average click-through rates for advertisers. The new format has the potential to become a staple placement alongside traditional sponsored search links.

[OReilly Superstream] Occupy the Space: A grassroots guide to engineering (an...Jason Yip
The typical problem in product engineering is not bad strategy, so much as “no strategy”. This leads to confusion, lack of motivation, and incoherent action. The next time you look for a strategy and find an empty space, instead of waiting for it to be filled, I will show you how to fill it in yourself. If you’re wrong, it forces a correction. If you’re right, it helps create focus. I’ll share how I’ve approached this in the past, both what works and lessons for what didn’t work so well.
Essentials of Automations: Exploring Attributes & Automation ParametersSafe Software
Building automations in FME Flow can save time, money, and help businesses scale by eliminating data silos and providing data to stakeholders in real-time. One essential component to orchestrating complex automations is the use of attributes & automation parameters (both formerly known as “keys”). In fact, it’s unlikely you’ll ever build an Automation without using these components, but what exactly are they?
Attributes & automation parameters enable the automation author to pass data values from one automation component to the next. During this webinar, our FME Flow Specialists will cover leveraging the three types of these output attributes & parameters in FME Flow: Event, Custom, and Automation. As a bonus, they’ll also be making use of the Split-Merge Block functionality.
You’ll leave this webinar with a better understanding of how to maximize the potential of automations by making use of attributes & automation parameters, with the ultimate goal of setting your enterprise integration workflows up on autopilot.

How information systems are built or acquired puts information, which is what they should be about, in a secondary place. Our language adapted accordingly, and we no longer talk about information systems but applications. Applications evolved in a way to break data into diverse fragments, tightly coupled with applications and expensive to integrate. The result is technical debt, which is re-paid by taking even bigger "loans", resulting in an ever-increasing technical debt. Software engineering and procurement practices work in sync with market forces to maintain this trend. This talk demonstrates how natural this situation is. The question is: can something be done to reverse the trend?

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity serverAntonios Katsarakis
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

2. New Facebook comments plugin March 1 The new comments plugin has more social relevance, improved moderation tools, provides better distribution and enables other login providers
3.
4. improved moderation tools: Admins can moderate on the Comments Box directly or on the moderation dashboard.
5. better distribution: there now is a full synchronization between the comments on the website and the comments in Facebook. You now can also comment as a brand page, which will (optionally) post your comment on your Facebook brand page wall. Reactions on comments you made on a website will trigger a notification taking you back to that website.

23. Convert Flash to HTML 5 with Adobe Wallaby March 7 The Wallaby AIR app can be downloaded at http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/wallaby/
24.
25. Convertingfrom Flash to HTML can mean a loss of some functionality, including the lack of effects like filters and blend modes. If a Flash feature is not supported in HTML, then it's just not available.
27. At this time, Wallaby uses Webkit CSS3 tags and therefore is only compatible with Webkit based browsers. The only supported Webkit browsers at this time are Chrome and Safari on OSX, Windows, and iOS (iPad, iPhone, iPod).
28. The generated HTML5 / CSS3 code can be changed/extended by anyone./comments/ This launch is a clear move towards the iPhone/iPad. Since Flash is not supported by these devices, Adobe tries to find new ways to convince the developer community Flash is still a valuable platform, even though HTML5 and Apple are breathing down its neck. /bookmarks/ http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/wallaby/
29. Facebook Places in Belgium March Until now, only Blackberry users were given access to Facebook Places in Belgium. Now, also Android and iOS users can use the service.
30. Deals, deals, deals March While Facebook eyes to dethrone Groupon, the latter prepares a Facebook ad blitz.
31. Deals, deals, deals /slide notes/ March /what/ It’s becoming one of the big business trends for 2011: offering deals. Currently, Groupon is leading the pack, while Facebook, Google and Microsoft are trying to get a piece of the pie. With Facebook places available now in Belgium, the next phase is allowing merchants to offer local deals based upon check-ins. But Facebook is also testing offering deals apart from its mobile ‘Places’ platform, which would make it pretty much like… Groupon. Google at the other hand, announced at the SXSW conference that check-ins on Google Latitude will soon also bring offers from local businesses. Meanwhile, Bing launched a ‘deal aggregator’ search for mobile, giving access to more than 200,000 unique offers in over 14,000 cities and towns across the U.S. /comments/ For local businesses, offering deals is a great way of promoting their brand and acquire new customers. The emerging platforms such as Groupon and Facebook deals make it very easy to experiment with offers as a marketing tool. From the provider point of view, it’s not clear who will in the end win the battle. After a rejected take-over offer from Google, Groupon is still going very strong. But Facebook will be able to leverage upon its huge user base, and Google still has the biggest database of local businesses…
33. Foursquare 3.0 March 8 Foursquare currently counts nearly 7.5 million users and 250.000 verified businesses.

41. Google partnered with American Express and Citigroup to sketch out a mobile payment platform for devices running Google’s mobile operating system ‘Android’.
42. Google this month also ditched support for QR codes inside Google Places in favor of NFC./comments/ Both Microsoft and Google are ‘gambling’ on the fact that mobile devices in the near future will have NFC technology on board. Of course, via its partnership with Nokia, Microsoft has a solid hardware partner, and also Google has a lot of impact through its Android platform. For Google, the win will be in the fact that knowing who paid for what in which store could drive much more targeted advertising … and offers (see before). Apart from rumored NFC support for iPhone 5, Apple seems to be nowhere in the equation (yet).

48. your social circle for +1’s will consist of people in your Gmail & Google Talk chat list, people in your “My Contacts” group in Google Contacts and people you follow in Google Reader or Google Buzz./comments/ ‘Social search’ – in which your search results are influenced by your social circle- is a hot topic. And Google has never been really strong with ‘social’. They already ‘socialized’ search results based mainly upon what your Twitter friends are posting, but they never had access to the real gold: the Facebook ‘like’ button (something Bing does have). So they did the only thing they could do: launch their own like button. You could of course ask yourself who will ‘+1’ a link in a search result page before he clicked through. An issue that will be solved with the launch of the web page version of the button.
