10 Tried-and-True Tips for Effective Employee Recognition
share
inShare
by Richelle Taylor, Aimia | June 15, 2014
It’s been widely proven that employee recognition programs can positively impact a company’s retention, culture, and productivity. However, what starts out as a well-intentioned initiative can quickly fizzle when not designed and implemented effectively, leaving HR leadership scratching their heads and wondering why the program didn’t work.
Here are 10 tips to keep your employee recognition program moving on the right track towards achieving maximum results:
1. Plan With a Solid Strategy
Even a simple recognition program needs a real strategy, including clearly defined metrics that align with the company’s overarching aspirations. When employees understand how their performance directly affects your organization’s mission, they see that everyone is on the same team, working toward something bigger than themselves. As an HR leader, your recognition efforts will yield positive results and, in turn, your employees will understand how their roles have meaning within the larger company.
2. Communicate Clearly and Often
Many companies make the mistake of generating excitement about their new recognition program, but then forget how important it is to continually remind employees about the program, its benefits, and how it fits with the company’s overall mission. In addition, program rules must be clearly communicated to all participants and stakeholders; nothing is more frustrating than a program with confusing goals or unattainable awards. Communication must also be aligned to your audience, so that your messaging is appropriate to different targets -- whether it’s senior leadership, management or front-line employees.
3. Deliver On-the-Spot Rewards
It’s one thing to offer incentives for employees to reach goals, but long-delayed rewards can have a negative effect. Making someone wait until the end of the year for a service-anniversary award, for instance, will just irritate employees. Instead, consider offering on-the-spot rewards -- whether it’s a gift certificate or a simple act of public recognition -- to catch people when they are doing something great or deserve a pat on the back.
4. Entice With Relevant Rewards
Don’t waste your investment on rewards that aren’t meaningful to employees. Instead, find out what they really want and would appreciate. For instance, your Millennial new hire in San Francisco probably has different tastes than your seasoned, Baby Boomer employee in Chicago.

Onboarding reflects what your company is and ultimately leaves the first impression on new employees. A report indicates a 2.6 times increase in job satisfaction among new employees when they have a positive onboarding experience.
You can rely on learning management tools that streamline difficult or time-consuming procedures for companies to hire new employees. Leveraging a comprehensive learning platform allows you to create personalized onboarding experiences for new employees.
Extra steps need to be taken to make sure employees joining remotely feel integrated into their team. To achieve this, you could implement a virtual onboarding program that may utilize internal bots to help facilitate a more seamless connection within your team. Check for chatbot pricing and integrate an employee engagement bot within your onboarding activities to encourage icebreaker conversations.

2. Employee benefits play an important role in attracting, retaining and
motivating your employees.
However, we also recognise that benefits are becoming
increasingly complex and time consuming to manage, which is
why we developed lumin.
lumin is a simple, very user friendly digital platform that helps
everyone from small medium enterprises ( SMEs ) to large corporations
to get their teams motivated and engaged in the exciting benefits they

5. Flexibility Matters
Benefits help you stand out from the
crowd and create a positive culture
where your staff feel valued, well
supported and motivated to deliver great
results - so it’s worth spending time
getting them right.
The problem is, one size certainly
doesn’t suit everyone. Within the multi-
generational workplace, you need to
tailor your offer to the different needs
of your employees. With more agile
working styles, it can also be difficult
to communicate with your team in one
central place, so you need to find new
ways to support them.
We live in a culture where everything is
available 24/7. We’re used to ordering
groceries, checking bank statements and
keeping up with the latest news on the go.
So why not give your team access to their
benefits in the same way?
We recognise that life is busy for everyone –
your staff, your HR teams and your business
owners – but maintaining that healthy work
life balance is so important, which is why
we developed lumin. Whether it be their
future pension, lifestyle or finances, lumin
will help keep your employees engaged,
happy and secure.
6. Supporting
Employers
Employee benefits are a key part of any company’s recruitment,
retention and employee wellbeing strategy, but they can be costly
and complex to run and maintain. lumin seeks to take away that
strain by offering a streamlined and intuitive system that helps to
keep admin and related costs at bay.
lumin_jul1118
7. By automating multiple complex processes, lumin
can help to reduce the scope for human error.
Mistakes can be costly, in more ways than one,
especially if you have a complicated system with
multiple benefits and a lot of data.
Reduce risk
The simple portal enables you to communicate with
your staff about benefits that matter to them in a
way they want - increasing their involvement and
excitement about the benefits available.
Engage employees

8. Even the most complicated of processes can
be easily managed on lumin. The system can
streamline a number of offerings in one simple
place – reducing manual processes and freeing
up time to focus on developing your strategy and
reward offering.
Simplify administration
With improved analytics you can get a clearer picture
of the overall value of your benefits, enabling you
to have more robust discussions with your benefit
providers. Of course, you’ll also make administrative
savings by managing everything through one central
portal.

9. Problems for Employers
It’s expensive to add
new benefits.
Information is stored in
different places and can be
hard to access.
It’s hard to negotiate
with suppliers without
clear data.
Benefit take up is poor and
staff don’t feel supported.
It’s hard to meet the diverse
needs of staff.
The risk of error is
high when transferring
information.
Employees can’t see the
value of their benefits and
don’t engage with them.
Retention of staff is
challenging as staff don’t
feel valued.
It’s a challenge to find and
keep the best staff.
More time spent on
managing benefits means
less time is spent on
supporting staff.
Poor staff engagement
means management are
less likely to invest in
developing benefits.
Disengaged employees
don’t perform as well.

employees. By getting your team more actively engaged in their

11. Your team can take control of their benefits wherever
they are, through whatever device they choose.
Rather than waiting for a statement each month, they
can keep on top of their benefits, and can see how
much you value them.
Demonstrate value
lumin is completely intuitive and easy to use, so busy
employees see all their benefits in one single place.
They can quickly make decisions that could really
help to improve their health, financial situation and
general wellbeing, hopefully improving performance
at work.

12. When your employees can tangibly see the difference
benefits make to their lives, they’ll feel a sense
of value and appreciation that will go a long way
towards creating a loyal workforce, helping your
business to grow.
Build relationships
lumin helps you send targeted communications that
are relevant to staff. You can also ask for employee
feedback and create a community where your
staff feel their opinions matter and are taken into
consideration.

Supporting Employees
I can’t see benefits that
are relevant to where I am
right now.
There is not enough choice
available making the
benefits seem irrelevant.
I want to feel like this is
a good deal and not an
extra expense.
I need to be able to access
the right level of detail
depending on my situation.
I am not engaged with
my benefits as there is
nothing for my age group.
I am unable to change my
mind or select the options
that I want at a later date.
As I am not sure how
much these are all going
to cost, I have decided it’s
not for me.
Without all the details, and
if I can’t make a decision
with my partner, I might not
bother with the benefits.
My benefit choices simply
don’t save me any money.
My benefits are poor
compared to my
friend’s company.
I wonder if my employer
is making money out of
these benefits?
Disengaged employees
don’t perform as well.
Will the benefits
actually make a
difference to me?
What options do
I have?
How much will they
actually cost me?
I want to make
decisions with
my partner.
