This complaint alleges that Luis J. Lopez died from asphyxiation while detained at the Wahiawa Police Station in Hawaii on January 7, 2012. The plaintiffs, who include Lopez's wife and children as well as his mother and stepfather, allege that the defendants, various police officers and the City and County of Honolulu, used excessive force against Lopez or exposed him to conditions amounting to severe punishment resulting in his death, violating his civil rights. They bring claims under both federal and state law and allege that Lopez was either murdered in custody or that his suicide, if it occurred, was due to the defendants' extraordinary negligence and reckless conduct.
