Welcome to the 84th season of performances at Hamline University Theatre!
In late October and early November we open with Macbeth by William Shakespeare. “Macbeth is a dark tale
of treachery and ‘vaulting ambition’ wherein a world is shattered and irrevocably changed when one man’s
(and his wife’s) inner demons win out over his morality until he is ‘in blood stepped in so far’ that there is no
return. We each have these ‘inner witches’ inside of us that might whisper of a possible future, but this cau-
tionary tale reminds us to listen to the inner moral compass which prevents us from doing evil.”
Carolyn Levy, Director
In December we present Under Construction --a work-in-progress dance showcase, presented by the Ham-
line Dance Ensemble featuring works from the Dance II Choreography class. It is an evening full of move-
ment that is sure to inspire.
Kaori Kenmotsu, Artistic Director
In January we present the Children‘s Show The Autism Adventures of Watson and Holmes: The Friendship
Equation. “In this highly interactive puppet play, the audience helps Watson and Holmes “rewind and investi-
gate” to learn how to be friends with someone on the autism spectrum (or anyone who may be a little quirky.)
The play focuses on effective ways for young adults to communicate and interact with those on the spec-
trum. The Friendship Equation speaks to all audience members using a lighthearted and comical approach
to help realize we’re all a little bit different in our own unique ways.”
Sarah Noel Simon, Director
In late February and early March we will present Dancing at Lughnasa, the “story of a young boy, Michael,
growing up in a fatherless home with his unmarried mother and four aunts in 1930’s Ireland. The five wom-
en, although drastically different, become a tight knit support system for each other. Suddenly Michael’s
uncle, a failed priest, appears on their doorstep, followed shortly by the boy’s father. Despite the appearance
of these two men, life goes on as usual...until a tragic event disrupts their lives beyond repair. This show
employs dance and music to explore themes of Irish cultural identity, nostalgia, historical change, and pagan
ritual.”
Carin Bratlie, Director
In late April and early May we will present Batboy: The Musical. The show is “a boisterous and irreverant
musical comedy/ horror show about an unusual cave-dwelling creature. Bat Boy is discovered and uneasily
welcomed into a conservative West Virginian community. Taken in by the local veterinarian and his family,
Bat Boy is quite happy in his new home. When the strange youth tries to fit in with his more narrow-minded
neighbors, they shockingly turn on him. What will happen when the entire town hears the heinous story of
Bat Boy’s unholy origin?”
Kaori Kenmotsu and Jeff Turner, Directors
In early May the season continues with Last Call – a festival of student work that showcases film, theatre,
comedy, new plays and experimental productions.
The season concludes during the second week in May with the dance show Act/React. “Hamline’s Dance
Ensemble’s showcase features noted Twin Cities choreographers and displays the Ensemble’s movement
exploration and physical risk taking. Roxane Wallace’s Afro Modern choreography infuses elements of mod-
ern dance with traditional dance forms of the African diaspora. Taja Will’s new work considers the intricacy of
the pop culture ideal of love. Artistic Director Kaori Kenmotsu’s Bye creates a physical score that represents
the complex nature of letting go. Finally, new student works explore the balance between caring for yourself
and caretaking and the cyclical nature of prayer wheels.”
We hope you enjoy the show and thank you for your support!

Director’s Note
~Carin Bratlie
Dancing at Lughnasa is told through the eyes of young
Michael looking back on a few days during the harvest
festival at the cusp of autumn in 1930. Friel’s use of nostalgia
during a metaphorical “change of the seasons” exemplifies
his experience writing short fiction. This striking mem-
oir-style play depicts the lives of young Michael, his mother,
her four sisters and their brother Jack. The play takes place
during a time of great tension between the older Pagan
customs and the new modern Catholicism in Ireland.
Through the pressures of this cultural collision, the family
must face secrets, repressed feelings and burgeoning
sexualities. Each character must come to terms with the
parts of themselves they have kept secret for so long while
maintaining their bond as a family. As the play is set on the
cusp of seasonal change, so is change about to happen in the
women’s lives.
Carin Bratlie is freelance director and acting
instructor. She teaches theater throughout
the state with The Guthrie Theater, Stepping-
stone Theater, and others. She is the Artistic
Director of Theatre Pro Rata and has directed
over 60 productions in professional,
educational and community theaters,
including Theatre Unbound’s recent Ivey
Award winning all-female production of Julius
Caesar in 2012.
