As far as seeing a difference in mergers that involve journalism and mergers that are largely about entertainment, I do not see much. I understand the argument made by Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin when he essentially states that having ownership of too many networks could "threaten diversity and localism in broadcasting,... and harm competition," and that is the same argument that can be and is made about mergers such as AT&T/Time Warner and Disney/ Fox. Essentially it is argued that too much of a good thing can be a bad thing and both types of mergers having ownership of too much can have bad consequences, so ultimately I do not think there is much of a difference between the two.
2.A journalists job is to put out information in news that everyday people benefit, learn, and understand from. If the information they put out isn't helping citizens, factual, and can be trusted; it is useless and damaging. They have a high value of making sure their facts and stories are correct without causing damage to themselves and us as citizens.

- People who gather news are not like employees of other companies. They have a social obligation that can actually override their employers’ immediate interests at times, and yet this obligation is the source of their employers’ financial success.
- This allegiance to citizens is the meaning of what we have come to call journalistic independence.... As journalists tried to honor and protect their carefully won independence from party and commercial pressures, they sometimes came to pursue independence for its own sake. Detachment from outside pressure could bleed into disengagement from the community. A second factor in the growing isolation was a change in journalism’s tone. After Vietnam and Watergate and later the advent of 24-hour cable news, journalism became noticeably more subjective and judgmental. More coverage was focused on mediating what public people were saying, rather than simply reporting it....
- Rather than selling customers content, newspeople are building a relationship with their audience based on their values, on their judgment, authority, courage, professionalism, and commitment to community. Providing this creates a bond with the public, which the news organization then rents to advertisers . Different from traditional consumer marketing. The audience is not the customer buying goods and services. The advertiser is. The customer/advertiser has to be subordinate to the third figure, the citizen.
- We have discussed loyalty from the perspective of our rights as citizens, but what about examining it from the other side - ourselves as future journalists. The globalization of news raises questions about the place of loyalty in a multinational news environment. Particularly difficult is the problem of patriotism, or allegiance to one's country. "The patriotism of journalists covering the Iraq war has been repeatedly called into question. Some questions arise because journalists reveal information that may either aid the enemy or demoralize the troops or folks on the home front. Eg. Kevin Sites' story about the American soldier who shot a wounded Iraqi in a Fallujah mosque or news organizations printing photographs of the Abu Ghraib prison scandal come to mind." The problem of patriotism and journalism will become increasingly difficult as new technology makes the "global village" more and more a reality. Organizations that were once uniquely American now have audiences in all corners of the globe.
