This document discusses the considerable sacrifices made by Mary and Joseph for the birth of Jesus. It describes how Mary, though a virgin, was told by the angel Gabriel that she would conceive and bear a son named Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit. Mary accepted this despite her confusion. The document also explains that Joseph planned to divorce Mary quietly after discovering she was pregnant, but an angel appeared to him in a dream and told him the baby was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and he should name the child Jesus and take Mary as his wife. Both Mary and Joseph made sacrifices in order to fulfill God's plan for the birth of Jesus, though it brought uncertainty and potential shame.
When it comes to Christmas time it’s so important to be reminded that there is something more than just gifts and parties going on here. In the Christmas story we see people everywhere recognizing that something more is going on than their present circumstances. So this year, remember there is something more to Christmas; something more to life.
The revelation that a boy was on the way was not good news for Joseph. How do you handle bad news that could be good news in disguise? Based on Matthew 1. The entire sermon is available at www.mympumc.net for 12.04.16

The uniqueness of Jesus’ birth gives insight into Who He is and another reason to receive Him as One sent from God. Fulfilled prophecy is a strong reason to place our faith in Jesus.
Matthew: The King and His Kingdom_Mt 1.18 25Stephen Palm
“The virgin birth of Christ is a key doctrine; for if Jesus Christ is not God come in sinless human flesh, then we have no Savior. Jesus had to be.” This quote from Pastor/Bible teacher Warren W. Wiersbe strikes at the very core of the Christian faith. Sceptics throughout the ages have questioned the miraculous conception and virgin birth of Jesus Christ. Their unbelief and criticism should not make us doubt. The testimony of Mary is that Jesus was miraculously conceived. So, let us be strengthened because we serve the God of miracles who spoke creation into existence (Gen. 1:1) and sent the Holy Spirit to come upon Mary along with the power of the Most High to overshadow her (Lk. 1:35). In order that she would bear a son and call him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins (Matt. 1:21). The greatest gift this Christmas season is that God has come in the flesh (Jn. 1:14).
Mary in the Christmas story is faithful and obedient to the call of God. Her immediate experience of that is rejection by family, friends and neighbours ... even Joseph!
Charles Spurgeon said that doubt is a foot poised to go forwards or backwards in faith. We can never go forward without first picking up the foot. So stare into your doubts. But then look into the face of God, realize his power, and grasp the greatness of his love. And ask your questions. Leave room a God whose power and wisdom are far above your own and search the Scriptures to see what his answer might be. Humble doubts lead to deep faith.
Matthew 11:1 - 24: Jesus Exalts John the BaptistRyanShannon26
J.C. Ryle a well-known bible scholar of yesteryear once said, “doubting does not prove that a man has no faith, but only that his faith is small. And even when our faith is small, the Lord is ready to help us.” In the first 19 verses of Matthew chapter 11 we are going to see one of Jesus’ greatest servants, John the Baptist experience doubts about his faith. Like John, when we earnestly seek Jesus in those difficult moments the Lord does not turn us away for having a small faith. It shows us that even when we do experience seasons of doubt God still uses us mightily for His purposes.

_MINISTRY_Come Let Us Adore Him #4_Mary & JosephRohan Dredge
Matthew’s gospel focuses on the role of Joseph in the advent story whilst Luke tends to lean towards the experiences and role that Mary played. Put the two together and you see that God chooses unremarkable people to do impossible things.
The danger here is that we romanticise the Christmas story. It’s really a story of trust, sacrifice, perseverance and a whole lot of courage in the fact that when God calls you, even in the midst of challenge, he is present to perform his purpose.
Joseph, in my opinion, is an unsung hero of Scripture. What a mighty and magnificent man. Choosing to obey God, honour Mary and Father Jesus at what would have amounted to significant personal cost. A picture of true biblical manhood.
The other lessons I would invite you to consider is what it means to be called and used by God for significant purposes. You and I are as much candidates for the purposes of God as Mary and Joseph. I trust you are open and willing to be invited into His grand plan and story.
Make it a great completion to 2013. See you in 2014.

Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…
In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

5. MARY’S SACRIFICE
Luke 1:26 In the sixth month after
Elizabeth had become pregnant, God
sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a
town in Galilee. 27 He was sent to a
virgin. The girl was engaged to a man
named Joseph. He came from the
family line of David. The virgin’s
name was Mary. 28 The angel greeted
her and said, “The Lord has blessed
you in a special way. He is with you.”
6. MARY’S SACRIFICE
Luke 1:29 Mary was very upset because of his
words. She wondered what kind of greeting this
could be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not
be afraid, Mary. God is very pleased with you.
31 You will become pregnant and give birth to a
son. You must call him Jesus. 32 He will be great
and will be called the Son of the Most High God.
The Lord God will make him a king like his
father David of long ago. 33 The Son of the
Most High God will rule forever over his people.
They are from the family line of Jacob. That
kingdom will never end.”
7. MARY’S SACRIFICE
Luke 1:34 “How can this happen?” Mary asked
the angel. “I am a virgin.” 35 The angel
answered, “The Holy Spirit will come to you. The
power of the Most High God will cover you. So
the holy one that is born will be called the Son of
God. 36 Your relative Elizabeth will have a child
even though she is old. People thought she could
not have children. But she has been pregnant for
six months now. 37 That’s because what God says
will always come true.” 38 “I serve the Lord,”
Mary answered. “May it happen to me just as
you said it would.” Then the angel left her.
8. JOSEPH’S SACRIFICE
Matthew 1:18 This is how the birth of
Jesus the Messiah came about. His
mother Mary and Joseph had promised to
get married. But before they started to
live together, it became clear that she was
going to have a baby. She became
pregnant by the power of the Holy Spirit.
19 Her husband Joseph was faithful to
the law. But he did not want to put her
to shame in public. So he planned to
divorce her quietly.
9. WHAT WERE THE JEWISH MARRIAGE CUSTOMS BACK THEN?
contrived contracted consecrated consummated
10. JOSEPH’S SACRIFICE
Matthew 1:20 But as Joseph was
thinking about this, an angel of the
Lord appeared to him in a dream. The
angel said, “Joseph, son of David,
don’t be afraid to take Mary home as
your wife. The baby inside her is from
the Holy Spirit. 21 She is going to
have a son. You must give him the
name Jesus. That’s because he will
save his people from their sins.”
11. JOSEPH’S SACRIFICE
Matthew 1:22 All this took place
to bring about what the Lord had
said would happen. He had said
through the prophet, 23 “The
virgin is going to have a baby. She
will give birth to a son. And he
will be called Immanuel.” (Isaiah
7:14) The name Immanuel means
“God with us.”
12. JOSEPH’S SACRIFICE
Matthew 1:24 Joseph woke up.
He did what the angel of the
Lord commanded him to do.
He took Mary home as his
wife. 25 But he did not sleep
with her until she gave birth to
a son. And Joseph gave him
the name Jesus.
