MA Reading Standard: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text,
including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of
specific word choices on meaning and tone (e.g., how the language evokes a
sense of time and place; how it sets a formal or informal tone).
3. Imagery:
Example: The gushing brook stole its way down the lush green mountains,
dotted with tiny flowers and trees coming alive with chirping birds.
Imagery is not confined to what you see; it can describe what you feel,
smell, hear, and taste
Why do authors use imagery?
So that readers can use their imagination to envision characters and
scenes that the writer has created
The use of descriptive words and phrases that
appeal to a reader’s physical senses
4. Golding uses a lot of imagery in his writing. Take a look at the
example below, where he describes the island
“It was roughly boat shaped: humped near this
end with behind them the jumbled descent to the
shore. On either side rocks, cliffs, treetops and a
steep slope: forward there, the length of a boat, a
tamer descent, tree-clad, with hints of pink: and
then the jungly flat of the island, dense green, but
drawn at the end to a pink tail. There, where the
island petered out in water, was another island; a
rock, almost detached, standing like a fort, facing
them across the green with one bold, pink
bastion.” p 29
5. Task: draw a picture of the island
In groups draw a map of the island
Incorporate 3+ quotes into your
drawing
Mark 2+ locations where things
happened on the island
Ex: the beach is where the boys had
their first meeting
Roles in the group:
• Lead artist
• Executes his/her artistic
vision
• Speaker
• Presents poster to the
class
• 2 researchers
• Finds quotes

In todays lesson we looked at imagery
to describe the setting of LOF. Imagery
is also used to describe characters.
Choose a character and find a quote
where Golding uses imagery to
describe that character.
