John Napier invented logarithms in the late 16th century during the Industrial Revolution. Logarithms represent the power to which a fixed number, called the base, must be raised to produce a given number. The logarithm of a number is the inverse of the exponential operation. Logarithms allow transformations between exponential and logarithmic forms, and can be used to find the value of an unknown variable.
