- * Location Services – The Past John Snow: Case Study Maps have been used to represent information throughout the ages, but what might be referenced as the first example of true location 'intelligence' was in London in 1854 when John Snow was able to debunk theories about the spread of cholera by overlaying a map of the area with the location of water pumps and was able to narrow the source to a single water pump. This layering of information over a map was able to identify relationships, and in turn insights that might otherwise never have been understood.

- Core to location services is the ability to locate objects. This topic covers why positioning is relevant, different methods used for obtaining position, technical terms associated with positioning, and brief examples of technical implementations.
- In the simplest of terms, positioning is extracting the coordinates of an object
- DEFINITION: GEOLOCATION
- The way latitude and longitude work Positive (+) numbers for latitude are north, longitude are east. Negative (-) numbers for latitude are south, longitude are west.

- DEFINITION: GLOBAL NAVIGATION SATELLITE SYSTEM (GNSS) A common approach to obtaining a geolocation is to use a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). An example of a GNSS implementation is the Global Positioning System (GPS) by USA, a global navigation satellite system that provides geolocation (latitude and longitude) and time information to a GPS receiver anywhere on or near the Earth where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites. Other example of GNSS implementations include: Galileo (Europe) 北斗卫星导航系统 (Beidou – China) ГЛОНАСС (GLONASS – Russia)

- DEFINITION: INDOOR POSITIONING SYSTEM Indoor positioning system (IPS) is a system to locate objects or people inside a building using radio waves, magnetic fields, acoustic signals, or other sensory information collected by mobile devices. - Maybe a little history of cartography here. Humans have always made maps (cave paintings!). Important point to make: Making maps is HARD. Very few organizations make their own maps. HERE is one of them.
