A WHO report found that 13.7% of Filipinos aged 13-15 use tobacco products, the 15th highest rate among 22 countries surveyed. Papua New Guinea had the highest youth tobacco use at 47.7%. Overall, the report estimated that 8.2% of youth in the Western Pacific region, or 5.3 million students, use tobacco. The WHO director called on countries to protect youth from tobacco to prevent them from starting early and continuing use into adulthood, given most smokers begin in their youth.

This study assessed behavioral risk factors for non-communicable diseases among adolescents in Chitwan District, Nepal. The researchers surveyed 1650 adolescents aged 15-19 years using questionnaires about substance use, dietary habits, and physical activity. They found high levels of behavioral risk factors. Abstract:Smoking is hateful to the nose, harmful to the brain & dangerous to the lungs. Smoking is one of the biggest public health threats the world has ever faced. Tobacco smoke contains different harmful chemicals which are injurious for health. Smoking causes different types of cancer like lung cancer, kidney cancer, breast cancer, bladder cancer. Every year millions of people around the world die from diseases caused by the tobacco. Male and female smokers lose an average of 13.1 and 14.4 years of life, respectively. Each cigarette that is smoked is estimated to short life by an average of 11 minutes. Most of younger (High School Students) may start smoking as a fashion. The main target of the study was to determine the attitudes & practices of smoking in highly school students, in Peshawar, KPK. This study was carried out in 5 high schools located in Peshawar; KPK. The sample was constituted by 112 students. The data of the study was obtained through well structured questionnaires. Students with male gender, those whose parents had a low educational level and a smoking mother, father or sibling, had a higher frequency of smoking. The result demonstrated that the majority of students said that the smoking is harmful for health. Some have the view that smoking reliefs you from the stress and cause mental relaxation. About more than 61% of the students spend their full pocket money on smoking.

IMPORTANCE Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the US. An estimated
annual 480 000 deaths are attributable to tobacco use in adults, including from secondhand
smoke. It is estimated that every day about 1600 youth aged 12 to 17 years smoke their first
cigarette and that about 5.6 million adolescents alive today will die prematurely from a
smoking-related illness. Although conventional cigarette use has gradually declined among
children in the US since the late 1990s, tobacco use via electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) is
quickly rising and is now more common among youth than cigarette smoking. e-Cigarette
products usually contain nicotine, which is addictive, raising concerns about e-cigarette use
and nicotine addiction in children. Exposure to nicotine during adolescence can harm the
developing brain, which may affect brain function and cognition, attention, and mood; thus,
minimizing nicotine exposure from any tobacco product in youth is important.
OBJECTIVE To update its 2013 recommendation, the USPSTF commissioned a review of the
evidence on the benefits and harms of primary care interventions for tobacco use prevention
and cessation in children and adolescents. The current systematic review newly included
e-cigarettes as a tobacco product.
POPULATION This recommendation applies to school-aged children and adolescents younger
than 18 years.
EVIDENCE ASSESSMENT The USPSTF concludes with moderate certainty that primary
care–feasible behavioral interventions, including education or brief counseling, to prevent
tobacco use in school-aged children and adolescents have a moderate net benefit. The
USPSTF concludes that there is insufficient evidence to determine the balance of benefits
and harms of primary care interventions for tobacco cessation among school-aged children
and adolescents who already smoke, because of a lack of adequately powered studies on
behavioral counseling interventions and a lack of studies on medications.

This study assessed the prevalence of risk factors for non-communicable diseases among adolescents in Parsa District, Nepal. Nearly half of males and one-third of females were using substances like tobacco, alcohol or drugs. Overweight and obesity levels were high, with 66% of males and 15.5% of females overweight by BMI criteria. Blood pressure measurements found 12% pre-hypertensive and 5% hypertensive. Risk factors like overweight/obesity were associated with increased blood pressure. IMPORTANCE Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the US. An estimated
annual 480 000 deaths are attributable to tobacco use in adults, including from secondhand
smoke. It is estimated that every day about 1600 youth aged 12 to 17 years smoke their first
cigarette and that about 5.6 million adolescents alive today will die prematurely from a
smoking-related illness. Although conventional cigarette use has gradually declined among
children in the US since the late 1990s, tobacco use via electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) is
quickly rising and is now more common among youth than cigarette smoking. e-Cigarette
products usually contain nicotine, which is addictive, raising concerns about e-cigarette use
and nicotine addiction in children. Exposure to nicotine during adolescence can harm the
developing brain, which may affect brain function and cognition, attention, and mood; thus,
minimizing nicotine exposure from any tobacco product in youth is important.
OBJECTIVE To update its 2013 recommendation, the USPSTF commissioned a review of the
evidence on the benefits and harms of primary care interventions for tobacco use prevention
and cessation in children and adolescents. The current systematic review newly included
e-cigarettes as a tobacco product.
POPULATION This recommendation applies to school-aged children and adolescents younger
than 18 years.
EVIDENCE ASSESSMENT The USPSTF concludes with moderate certainty that primary
care–feasible behavioral interventions, including education or brief counseling, to prevent
tobacco use in school-aged children and adolescents have a moderate net benefit. The
USPSTF concludes that there is insufficient evidence to determine the balance of benefits
and harms of primary care interventions for tobacco cessation among school-aged children
and adolescents who already smoke, because of a lack of adequately powered studies on
behavioral counseling interventions and a lack of studies on medications.

MORE than one in every eight Filipino aged 13–15 years old have been found to be puffing tobacco products, according to the Youth and Tobacco in the Western Pacific Region: Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) 2005-2014 report of the World Health Organization (WHO). According to the latest GYTS report of the WHO Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO), 13.7 percent of those aged 13 to 15 years old in the Philippines are using tobacco products. This makes the Philippines rank 15th among the highest out of the 22 countries subjected to the GYTS, said the report. Leading the pack of having the highest number of youth smokers in the region is Papua New Guinea with 47.7 percent of their youth using tobacco products. Rounding out the top 10 are Pacific countries Palau (45.4%); Micronesia (43.3%). Solomon Islands (40.2%); Kiribati (37.1%); Tuvalu (36.4%); Tonga (35.7%); Cook Islands (35.1%); Marshall Islands (25.9%); and Vanuatu (25.6%). According to the GYTS, overall estimates of 8.2 percent of the region’s youth (or 5.3 million students) are found to be using tobacco products. “Most smokers start using tobacco at a young age and continue throughout adulthood. As a consequence, a significant proportion will experience tobacco-related illness and death,” said WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific Dr Shin Young-soo in a statement. The WHO, then, called on member-states to put more attention in protecting the youth from tobacco harms. This, the WHO official said, is especially important since most smokers start using tobacco at a young age and continue throughout adulthood. “We must remain vigilant to ensure that the future of our youth won't be marred by tobacco's deplorable harms. To use the youth as today's tobacco customers is unacceptable," said Shin. Tobacco use has been proven to result to cardiovascular disease, cancer, and chronic respiratory disease, further resulting in premature disease and death. The WHO noted how, globally, tobacco claims six million lives each year with 30 percent of all tobacco-related deaths occurring in the Western Pacific Region. (HDT/Sunnex)
