3. ELIXIR
“They are clear, sweetened hydroalcoholic solutions
intended for oral use and are usually flavored to enhance
their palatability.”
They are of two types: -
a. Non-Medicated
b. Medicated
Nonmedicated elixirs which are used as flavoring agent or vehicles.
e.g.- Syrups containing lemon juice, orange juice, raspberry juice
Medicated elixirs which are used for the therapeutic effect of the medicinal substances they contain.
e.g.- Antibiotic, antihistamine, sedative etc.
4. FORMULATION
1. VEHICLE:
water, Alcohol, Syrup, Glycerin, Sorbitol, and Propylene glycol
Concentration of alcohol 5-40%.
2. Adjuncts:
A. Chemical Stabilizers:
Citric acid added to Neomycin elixir to adjust pH between 4-5 to prevent darkening on storage.
B. Preservative:
20% alcohol, syrup & methyl paraben and propyl paraben.
C. Coloring Agent:
Coal tar Dyes
D. Flavouring Agent:
Black current syrup, Raspberry Syrup, lemon syrup, and orange syrup etc.
5. METHOD OF PREPARATION
Elixir commonly prepared by simple dissolution with agitation.
Dissolve the water soluble ingredient in water and other ingredient in alcohol.
The aqueous solution is then added in the alcoholic solution with constant stirring.
Make up the volume with the vehicle of the formulation
Add Flavoring Agent, Coloring Agent and Sweetening Agent
Add Talc 3% to absorbed excess oil
Filter the elixir to get clear product
Packed in suitable container and Labelled properly
6. ADVANTAGES:
More fluid then syrup
It more effective in masking unpleasant test.
Elixir are more readily prepare and manufactured than syrup.
It contain both water and alcohol soluble component.
More preferred then syrup.
DISADVANTAGES:
Alcohol is not good for children
Large amount of alcohol cause burning sensation to the tongue.
Storage problem.
STORAGE:
It should be dispensed in narrow mouthed, screw capped, colorless plain bottle.
Do not store above 40 degree centigrade.

The vehicle is syrup and viscous in nature to ensure prolonged action.
These are taken slowly in small doses without diluting with water.

Lemon Syrup 200ml
Benzoic acid solution 20ml
