Editor's Notes
Now this sounds simple but might be easiers said than done!
Problem
We do not know how much ecological damage we cause with our behavior.
For example: I drive a car, I know it causes carbon emissions, but how much?
I use a dishwasher, but how energy it consumes I don’t know – to be honest: I don’t want to know!
But I do want to be rewarded for sustainable behavior.
No insight information
I would like to take you back 10 years in time
The Elgon story
I was in charge of a company that planted trees and restored forest in order to prevent climate change. At a certain moment in of our projects in Uganda we encountered the situation that thousands of local people aggressively cut the trees and used the ground to grow crops in order to feed there children.
They felt no problem cutting the trees because the forest was of no (financial) value to them. During this meeting the community urged me to come with solutions! If I wanted them to keep and protect the forest, the wanted me to pay for it. And they were right! While we trying to do the good thing for the planet we did not pay attention to local problems. Why the local communities were in desperate need for food and income.
Conclusion
This made me even more aware of the problem in our economy: trees are worth more if you cut then down than if you leave them standing. That is completely opposite to what it should be! Forests play a major rol in combatting climate change and are crucial for live on earth and should be valued as such.
This brought me to the conclusion that if we want to make changes we need to come up with more sustainable and fair business models. Models that reward those who provide value to the planet. If people protect the forest that help prevent climate change they should be rewarded for it. Not those who cut and sell the trees…
That brings me to two question I would like to discuss today!
That brings us to two the main questions that I would like to discuss today:
Can we create new, disruptive and fair business models in which sustainable behavior and products are financially much more attractive that unsustainable behavior and products.
How can we use data and technology to create a smart and easy energy household. A household that results in energy neutrality.
These questions might seem to have nothing to do with each other, but they actually do!
At Qurrent we devote our time to provide solutions for these questions, I will tell you how!
Problem (insight, economy/BM) Qurrent link to next slide: Opposite (turn things around)
How: We turn around what we is wrong, unfair or unsustainable
This may just seem a lazy animal hanging upside down but it is actually very clevel.
By handing upside down it is saving lots of energy.
This is what we do at Qurrent, for many aspect we choose to go for the opposite route
The same is happening in the energy sector, without many people knowing it.
Things are turning around, not a big bang, but it is happening
The same is happening in the energy sector.
This process will continu in the coming decade or so. From traditional centralized to decentral and smart.
This is what it will look like
Customers are becoming ‘energy producers’: prosumers
Utilities change from an energy supplying role to IT & DATA driven energy and financial flow service companies
Discuss further on new role and what that means:
Energy companies are becoming IT companies
Energy companies will become data driven
The need for automated interfaces will increase
Integration with other sectors will take place:
Apple homekit, Google…., IBM, etc. will provide platforms to which all sorts of apps can connect
At Qurrent we are creating a virtual sustainable grid consisting of:
Centralised renewable production
Production at the rooftops of clients
Cooperative/regional production
Personal insight in usage and supply
We have created what I call a virtual smart energy network/grid
Consumers can choose where there energy comes from and participate in several projects
At the same time they have realtime insight in there energy usage link to next slide
Qbox en Iphone laten zien op volgende slide
And you can control that with an App!
Functionalities:
Realtime monitoring
Comparison with other households
Realtime monitoring of the performance of solar panels
Sounds nice, but who wants to be looking at his energy usage every day? Especially if there is nothing that you can control or change about it…
NOBODY ….maybe some techy nurds like myself.. For the majority it is only interesting if it brings BENEFITS
And that is where the internet of things comes in
Not that we have discussed the Energy network, let’s look at the household domain
That is where we take the next step
We are going to make use of all home devices which are connected to the internet en connect them to the energy network
Internet of things
More and more devices get connected to the internet. You can get updates, help functions and already shift devices on and of.
But it still is one-on-one interaction between yourself and the device.
Than can change if connect this household domain to the energy network.
One step further is to connect your ‘devices’ to the energy network.
Than we can start managing your energy usage in such a way that it is most efficient, sustainable and cheap.
The result is a energy neutral smart grid when managed well:
When it is windy and sunny devices like washers, dryers are turned on, electric vehicle are charged and other batteries are charged until all available electricity is used
When few energy is available devices are turned low and energy stored in batteries is used
The overcapacity of one househould is used the fill the undercapacity of the other household
This is done AUTOMATICALLY, Through clever algorithms energy production and consumption is balanced
The result is not only in less need for fossil fueled energy production but also significant lower costs. And that attracts consumers. Especially when it is al done automatically with no loss of comfort.
Think about it, currently the SMART household domain and the SMART energy network domain are completely disconnected….with NO SMART interfaces, when we build those we can a big jump forward!
The market will change dramatically from utility provider driven tot service provider driven.
So completely new business models are needed.
Am I throwing small talk at you? No, we are already doing it.
We are running a pilot with 300 customers that can adapt the moment of there energy consumption to the actual energy prices.
Through an App they are informed on the hourly energy prices. At the same time they are informed on there hourly energy use and are triggered to manage there usage.
Still manual, but it is a start. In the future they can select a suitable profile (eg cost efficient, green or comfort) and based on that there energy usage is automatically managed.
The result: green and cost efficient energy.
We can only do this because we have a sustainable business model which is not based on margin/profit on the energy usage but only on the service we provide! That is why many traditional utilities have difficulties with these kind of new products.
We will start building the virtual smart energy grid and manage the production and consumption of our clients energy.
Challenges that we encounter
When we encounter challenges/difficulties we go back to thinking differently: the opposite way!
Thank you!
