BY SI DLAMINI
2. At the end of the lesson learnersshouldbe ableto identify:
Human factors that cause ill health, accidents, crisis and disasters
Types of lifestyle diseases
Psychological, social, religious factors, cultural practices and different
knowledge perspectives
3. ILL-HEALTH, accidents, crisis and disasters
Ill-health: if you have ill-health, it means that you are sick. Bad lifestyle choices can
leave to ill-health. E.g having unprotected sex and getting STIs, and smoking and
getting liver disease. Tobacco according to Ashral Eladawy (2015), is one of the
greatest emerging health disasters in human history.
Accidents: accidents happens when unexpected and unplanned event happens to a
person. E.g car accident. Jayaramachandran (2020) states that an accident is an
unpremeditated event resulting in recognizable damage.
Crisis: an emergency situation that causes great distress and upheaval. E.g husband
leaves his wife for another and leaves the entire family without food, school fees or
rent money.
Disaster: a disaster is a great tragedy or devastation. It can be caused by nature or
people.
5. What are lifestyle diseases?
Cancer
Hypertension
Tuberculosis
Sexually transmitted diseases
Siva (2009) states that through exercise, you have a powerful tool for improving
your health.
6. Psychological, social and religious factors, cultural practices and
different knowledge perspectives
Human factors that can cause ill-health include psychological,
social and religious factors, cultural practices (rites or regular
activities done by people of the same origin) and different
knowledge perspectives (facts and information seen from a
particular viewpoint, outlook or angle)
7. Psychological factors that cause ill-health
Psychological factors are mental and emotional aspects of being a human being.
E.g if you have a negative self-image and low self-esteem you may not think that
you are worth demanding safe sex, like using a condom.
This psychological factor can then lead you to getting HIV or having an
unplanned pregnancy . This illness can, in turn, cause psychological effects like
stress and depression.
Others eat to feel better which may lead to sickness and eating disorders (Ncube,
2019)
8. Social factors that cause ill-health
Ill-health is linked to social factors which are issues that involves people, the community and
public
Violence can lead to injury and stress. Gender-based violence especially against women, causes
a great deal of ill-health. E.g if woman are abused they suffer from bruises, broken bones,
burns, suffer, damaged eyes etc. Also due to rape, women are more exposed to STIs, including
HIV. According to Abuelhassan (2017), there is about 500 000 000 new infections per year.
Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) results when mothers drink alcohol while they are pregnant.
Alcohol consumed during pregnancy is not safe at all for the foetus, you place your baby at risk
of mental and physical developmental problems. It causes learning problems so children cannot
cope at school, they drop out and become unemployable which then leads to poverty.
Also most people resort to smoking as a stress mechanism. Baldres (2016) most people
occasionally smoke to relieve stress and forget the harm it can cause to their bodies.
9. RELIGIOUS FACTORS THAT CAUSE ILL-HEALTH
For some people, their religion may prevent them from taking medication or
having a blood transfusion.
This could lead to serious ill-ness and even death.
There are people who have really strong religious beliefs and believe that only
their God can heal and cure them.
They refuse to get medical or mental help
10. cultural practices that cause ill-health
There are many cultural practices that are helpful and bring healing. However,
some cultural practices are often aimed at benefiting males and cause harm to
females.
E.g Female mutilation (FSM), wife inheritance and male child preference, are all
practices that seriously harm the health of women
11. different knowledge perspectives
A knowledge perspective is the viewpoint or outlook you have on something. E.g
facts and information can be seen from a particular viewpoint, outlook or angle
Different people have different knowledge perspectives which means different
ways of understanding and knowing about things
For instance, one person may say that it is healthy to fast or not eat for three days
or more, while another person might say it is harmful.
Another example would be that, a person may say eating meat is healthy, while
other people do not eat meat as they are animal lovers or they say it is unhealthy
or they just do not like the taste/smell of meat.
