This document summarizes a study assessing the effectiveness of using LiDAR point cloud technology to automatically detect and inventory traffic signs along Interstate 20 in Georgia. A ground truth dataset of over 3,800 signs was manually created to serve as a control for comparing results. Testing of LiDAR detection was conducted on one data clip, evaluating five parameters. Observations showed multiple detection markers were placed at large, reflective signs. Adjusting the minimum distance between signs and minimum hit count parameters reduced excessive markers. Further analysis of sensitivity and using a left-side LiDAR camera was recommended to improve results.
