This document summarizes a library skills class that covered the Dewey Decimal Classification system. It explains that the DDC organizes non-fiction books into 10 main divisions, which are further divided into 10 subdivisions using decimals. Books are assigned a Dewey number based on their subject. As part of the classwork, students found their favorite Dewey sections and shared them with the teacher. For homework, students were asked to email the teacher three books from their favorite section to check out and explore the library skills webpage, including Google Docs.

The Dewey Decimal Classification System
(DDC) categorizes nonfiction books into ten
main divisions (see below). These classes are
then divided into ten subdivisions. The use of
decimals allows for additional categories. A
book is assigned a Dewey number based on its
subject. The Dewey number and the first three
letters of the author's last name become the
book's call number. Nonfiction books are
arranged numerically on the shelves according
to DDC:)
