  • #4 My name is Ann Cannon, I am the Liaison for the School of E-Learning This video will give you a brief introduction to library services for NSU online students
  • #5 You maybe wondering… how can I go to the library, when I go to school online ? And why should I, when I can google what I want. When it comes to research, go beyond google.
  • #6 Google is easy. It’s good for collecting background information. So why not Google?” First of all, Everything on the web is not reliable or available. Secondly, You need to evaluate the information; however, Google Scholar is the best way to find scholarly literature.
  • #7 Evaluating information from the web involves questioning. Is it good information? Or is it CRAAP? CRAAP is an acronym for currency, relevance, authority, accuracy, and purpose, this is the criteria used to evaluate information. This is your library! We are here to assist you.
  • #8 Using library resources will help you save time, avoid frustration and hopefully you will get better grades.
  • #9 As an online student, all you need is a computer with an internet connection, your NSU network I.D. and password .
  • #10 As a distant learner, materials can be sent to you at no cost. Simply go to the library’s homepage and hover over the services tab and click on interlibrary loan and follow the screen prompts.
  • #11 If you are a first time user, there is an online form that you have to complete to create an account. This allows you to request articles and books at no cost.
  • #12 As a distanct learner, you can: access e resources such as full text journals and e books Request items through ILL Find online skill support to help you complete your assignments with the assignment scheduler** ( click the hyperlink and explain…) Receive off campus assistance E mail us your research question through the Ask a librarian service
  • #13 The library’s homepage is an open door to a wealth of information: books, databases, journals, tutorials and much more If you need help from a librarian, you may call us. Check us out on face book too.

  • #15 Databases are used to locate online articles from magazine, journals or newspapers. Some are full-text.
  • #16 E books are great for distant leaners because you can read them whenever or wherever you want. It is a digital version of a print book. Remember, if you are off campus, you will need to log in with your NSU network ID.
  • #17 Use the library catalog to search the library’s collection.
  • #18 Subject guides have been created by Librarians to help you identify resources for your assignment or subject. The subject guide link can be found under the research tab on the homepage. We also have instructional mini-tutorials on a variety of subjects found in iTunes U.
  • #19 If you are located in the state of Virginia, The Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA) allows you to use any academic library in the state of Virginia.
