Edward Drummond Libbey founded the Libbey Glass Company in Toledo, Ohio in 1888 after moving the operations from New England Glass Works in Massachusetts to take advantage of natural gas resources, sand deposits, and transportation access in Toledo. Libbey Glass Company, later renamed Libbey Inc., helped establish Toledo as a center of the glass industry under Edward Drummond Libbey's leadership from 1888 until his death in 1925.
