PCU America is an America-class amphibious assault ship that will act as a flagship for expeditionary strike groups carrying F-35B and MV-22 aircraft. She is scheduled for delivery to the US Navy in spring 2014. At 45,000 tons, she is as large as many nations' aircraft carriers and can fulfill similar missions with 20 F-35Bs. Her design is based on the USS Makin Island but removes the well deck to allow more space for aviation facilities and fuel. Approximately 45% of her design is from the LHD-8 with the well deck removed to accommodate a larger hangar deck for maintaining the F-35B and MV-22, which are larger than previous aircraft.
