According to Reid Lyon and James Wendorf, ninety-five percent of the children that are struggling with reading are instructional casualties. That means THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CHILD, THE ISSUE IS HOW THEY ARE BEING TAUGHT.
"It’s a consequence of an unnatural, overwhelming ambiguity forced upon the child while nobody is giving them a stairway through it before they shame-out to the process. The shame itself then impedes their cognitive ability to process it, as well as diminishes their self-esteem in general with all of its transferred effects.
So we have this massive problem that when we cut it down has to do with the social-educational paradigm-inertia."

A lack of reading limits one’s quality of life (Bradford, Shippen, Alberto, Houschins, & Flores, 2006) and yet only 1 in 5 students with intellectual disabilities reaches minimal literacy levels (Katims, 2001). Slow development of reading skills may affect more than just one academic subject but may also delay language acquisition, general knowledge, vocabulary, and even social acceptance.
However, “Literacy and reading instruction for students with significant intellectual disabilities is in its infancy….there is a dearth of information regarding complete instructional programs that might help these children learn to read and write” (Erickson et al., 2009, p. 132).

If the kids know the words (my next door neighbour's 3 year old knows them very well) then USE this to help their brains link the speech sounds to sound pics. They can 'hear' the words in order along with the music, in their minds, so get mapping ! Play Speech Sound Pic Detective. Follow the words along with the music, and stop at one. Ask what the next word is, and then use Duck Hands, Lines and Numbers, and map the lines with the sound pics. They are already coded so doesn't matter what code level they are at, they will figure it out.
Kids LOVE doing this.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Letter to parent of a child using SSP at school - Reading and Spelling
1. Dear XXX- what you really need to do is to ask your child how it all works. It’s the quickest and
easiest way for children to not only learn to read and spell but to understand it all- and usually much
quicker than for parents. So ask them to tell you how to spell words- the system etc
You definitely need to order a USB with lessons on it as you can then see how fast you code as
well! How old is your child? Also get a Spelling Cloud keyring and Pocket Rocket Readers. The USB
has all 440 sight words/ high frequency words- coded. Coded means linking speech sounds with
sound pics, so the brain actually understands them and isnt memorising. They need to be able to use
duck Hands, Lines and Numbers to spell these words as well- the splits are shown in the pdf.
2.
3.
4.
5. Play Speech Sound Detective as often as you can – with anything. You tell them the word, and they
work out the splits.
Use the keyring – here you can see a cloud for one speech sound- as I say ‘laugh’ in the way that
rhymes with ‘gaff’ I have ‘au’ in mine, as shown here. The clouds are a reference point- you dont
teach them- you discover them. They offer choices when spelling- so the child can quickly see what
‘looks right’ The more words they see, the more their brains ‘click’ in this regard, and ‘see’ what
looks right more easily.
6.
7.
8. While doing so much discovering and talking their knowledge increases naturally. For example on
Friday there was ‘rain’ so I ask children ‘is there another meaning? Is it spelt the same (reign) When
looking for the word ‘nutrition’ on a cereal packed, and working out the splits – n/u/t/r/i/ci/a/n –
they google it for the meaning.
However your school probably has a vocab program or uses Pop Corn words etc – Ill find out as
well.
9. This shows how the brain needs to ‘see’ words- only one of these is split incorrectly- can you or your
child spot it?
Download the free SSP Spelling Piano app and you will find out how words split according to speech
as well- the app follow the order of teaching the code.
10. This is a table top resource on the USB showing the sound pics, and first few Duck Levels- the rest
are on the back.
11. You dont need a list of spelling words- they learn to spell ANY words built using the code they are
learning (and the sight words) – by Blue (with the clouds as well) they can spell any word in the
English language by using the system- there is no memorising of sight words (Look Cover Say) as this
doesnt work- its not how the brain works for most.
If you go into a class of Year 2 students who have used this for 2 terms now you will all but two
working at the level of a Year 4 student at the same school, as those aren’t yet using SSP, and that all
are reading chapter books and can spell anything.
This shows progress in one term. The piece she is reading for her Probe Assessment is something she
