Find out on a project on how to achieve future household consumption already today. We proceeded in 4 steps:
1. We calculated the lifestyle material footprints of the 5 participating households.
2. Households created their own roadmaps for halving material footprints by 2030.
3. Households tested relevant measures towards a one-planet material footprint of 8 tonnes per person in a year.
4. In a future workshop we developed mainstreaming options in co-operation between service and infrastructure providers and households.
The results of the experiments were encouraging: Households decreased their material footprint already close to the 2030 targets in their roadmaps. They thus showed that it is possible to achieve a significant dematerialisation of consumption by relatively few changes in everyday living even today. However, a part of the services used in the experiments had to be simulated because they were not yet available in the area where the project took place. Thus, achieving a one-planet level of resource use also requires systemic changes. While changing their lifestyles in the experimental phase of the project, several households noticed that their quality of life even increased.
As a conclusion, relevant and positive changes in household behaviour and activities can be achieved even soon. Thus there is no need for waiting until systemic changes have happened but households can make powerful improvements immediately, thus encouraging other actors to offer more sustainable solutions on the market.

We need to move beyond eco design - greener materials, improved life cycle impact, designing for recyclability. We’re seizing the moment of Climate Action talks in Paris to think macro, and micro, and develop prototypes for building the change we want to see in the world.
How can we use the tools of design, systems thinking, and business models, to move the bigger levers in the system? This course is a 2 year environmental science and startup MBA course packed into one semester, plus a boot camp in how to organize stakeholders and facilitate community involvement.

The presentation highlights in which regard economic growth has been decoupled from environmental impacts in Germany. It is based on extensive desk research and six expert interviews.
The answer to the question if Germany can serve as an example for successful and absolute decoupling is not unambiguous. Germany has succeeded in stopping the growth of material and energy use. However, absolute decoupling is happening only when natural resource use and other environmental impacts are decreasing in absolute terms. This has, so far, not happened to natural resource use in general but only to domestic emissions and raw-material use.
Total Material Requirement and Total Material Consumption (TMR and TMC), as well as carbon foot-print and ecological footprint, have not increased nor decreased during this century in Germany. Water footprint and land use for food production have increased, as well as domestic land use for infrastructure and settlements, and biodiversity decline.
Absolute decoupling, i.e. the constant decrease of environmental impacts while the economy is growing, could not be stated for any indicator that takes into account also the impacts of imports. However, the development within Germany’s borders cannot be considered sufficient while both economy and material flows are subject of constant globalisation.
As a conclusion, general absolute decoupling cannot yet been found in Germany. However, Germany has been politically active in decreasing natural resource use and other environmental impacts. This is visible, for instance, in strongly increasing activities of states and companies in the field of resource efficiency. However, so far we are not yet able to claim general evidence that economic growth generally could be decoupled from resource use and other environmental impacts when potential burden-shifting through imported goods is taken into account.
The presentation highlights the role of circular economy and bioeconomy for the transition to sustainable lifestyles. Present consumption footprints in industrialized countries exceed sustainable levels by far. The presentation shows which consumption components are especially suitable for the potential circular economy and bioeconomy and what the solutions could look like.
By 2050, the material footprint of household consumption should drop to 8 tonnes per person in a year. See how this vision can be achieved and how we will have to develop both technologies and lifestyles.
Lahden Kulinaaritalon peruskorjauksen materiaalijalanjälkiMichael Lettenmeier
Presentation of a case study on the application of project-based learning in relation to life-cycle management. A student class of environmental engineering at the Lahti University of Applied Sciences assessed the material flows of the renovation and enlargement of a building. A former building and laboratory of wood sector education was renovated and enlarged in order to turn it into a centre for gastronomy education. An interesting finding of the assessment was that in large-scale renovation projects including major enlargements the material intensity of buildings might rise if a sufficient long-term use of the newly built parts of the building cannot be ensured due to the age of the remaining parts of the old building. Therefore, heavy renovation should be planned carefully in order to avoid excessive resource use.

This presentation shows how we can consume food in a sustainable way while still enjoying a large variety of good and healthy food in the future.
Our present overconsumption of natural resources exceeds planetary boundaries in many ways. The global use of many raw-materials has grown by even hundreds of per cents during the recent decades. We have to dematerialize our Western lifestyles and societies if we want to reduce ecological impacts like biodiversity decline or climate change or social and economic impacts like peak oil and social conflicts around the world.
A sustainable resource use level for household consumption is an important guideline for directing human activities towards sustainability. It would range at 8 tonnes of material footprint per person in a year, which is roughly 20 per cent of the present level in Western countries. But the present material footprint of our nutrition cannot be reduced to the same extent because we cannot decrease food intake infinitely. Therefore, the share of nutrition will grow in a sustainable material footprint of household consumption.
A sustainable material footprint for nutrition of around 3 tonnes per person in a year is half of present in absolut terms but means an increase from 15 to nearly 40 per cent of the total material footprint of household consumption. Thus, the share of nutrition will increase considerably while diversity in food choice is still be necessary and possible. Increasing demand for and competition on natural resources will also rise prices. Then, it’s likely that also the trend of a declining share of nutrition in the expenditure of households will turn so that there will also be less money available for other fields of consumption.
As consumers, we could correct this development if we start consuming resource saving meals in time. This will also require action by companies on the supply side, e.g. by nudging consumers to less resource-intensive meals, and by politics and administration to develop framework conditions for resource-efficient food production and consumption. If we use the resource saving potentials of our nutrition, we will be able to decrease pressure on our planet and still will have left choices for our consumption.
