Through its Plan A initiative, Marks and Spencer has achieved sustainability goals that have benefited the environment and business. It aims to construct future stores that are zero carbon in construction, made from 100% recycled materials, and fully recyclable. Such stores would have net positive biodiversity and water impacts and resilience to climate change. Further work is still needed to engage suppliers, refine methodology, and create a construction water strategy. Water consumption is a growing issue as demand outpaces supply in the UK.
