Pulp is the raw material used to make paper, paperboard, and similar products. It is obtained from plant fibers, mainly wood, and is therefore renewable. There are three main components of wood cell walls: cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin. Cellulose is the most abundant and makes up the fibers that give paper its strength. Hemicelluloses and lignin are also present. Paper, paperboard, and fiberboard differ in thickness and intended use, from thin and flexible paper to thicker and more rigid paperboard and fiberboard. Paper and paperboard can be treated and coated to improve properties like strength, barrier qualities, and heat sealability for various packaging applications.
