John the Baptist's mission was to prepare the people for the coming of Jesus Christ. He preached a message of repentance, urging people to reform their lives and bring forth fruits meet for repentance. Jesus was baptized by John to fulfill all righteousness, even though He was sinless. Through baptism, we make covenants with God to take upon us the name of Jesus Christ, serve Him, and keep His commandments. After His baptism, Jesus fasted and prayed in the wilderness, preparing Him to withstand Satan's temptations through appeal to physical appetite, pride, and worldly riches. We can resist temptation through scripture study, prayer, fasting and humility.
