2. What are the odds of throwing three 6's in a
row?
• Even if you throw three 6’s in a row, the odds of you throwing
another 6 are still 5/1!
• However, the odds of you throwing 3 sixes in a row one after the
other is 215/1.
(5/1 x 5/1 x 5/1) = (6 x 6 x 6 – 1) = 215/1
Now let’s do an example with horses:

3. • Let us use a horse racing example to show the odds with a
multiple throw of the dice.
• Throwing three sixes in a row are an example of what we
call a multiple bet. It’s like you betting on three horses in
three races, each at 5/1.
• For example:
Race 1: Horse number 7 @ 5/1 = (5 + 1 = 6)
Race 5: Horse number 5 @ 5/1 = (5 + 1 =6)
Race 8: Horse number 3 @ 5/1 = (5 + 1 =6)
• Multiply 6 x 6 x 6 = 216 – 1 = 215. The odds are therefore
215/1.
• For R10 you will get R2150 or R4250 for R20, R6450 for
R30.

4. Odds in a Multiple bet (Exercise)
• Calculate the odds you will receive if you placed a multiple bet on the
following events (taken directly from the Turf Sport database):

• Race 1: HALLOWED @ 2.5 (5/2)
• Race 3: BOULEVARD @ 9 (9/1)
• Race 5: FLAMING AL @ 1 (1/1)

how much he stands to win for a stake of R100.

10. In the event of two horses dead heating for 1st place, bets on these horses
will be halved (both winnings and stake).
Example:
• Winner no 1 bet is 1000/400. His bet, because he has backed half a winner
due to the dead heat, will become 500/200 and the payout will be R670
(R500 less 6% tax plus half his stake). He loses half his stake (R200).
• Winner no 2 bet is 1000/70. His bet, because he has also backed half a
winner, will become 500/35 and the payout will be R505 (R500 less 6% tax
plus R35 stake). He also loses half his stake (R35).
