Philippines has
been the subject
of attention of
many well-known
international
animation studios.
A 60-minute
animated feature
was produced
based on local
folklore called The
Adventures of
Lam-Ang.
1983, Burbank
Studios of
Australia was the
first to sub-
contract animation
production in the
Philippines, setting
up its studio in
Manila
Nowadays, more than ever, with the help
of technology, animation has never been
more promising to out Filipino animators.
But what does it really take to succeed as
an animator whether you decide to work
for a company or start a company of your
own?
What is an
entrepreneur?
What is
competent?
Is”one who
organizes, manages,
and assumes the
risks of a business
or enterprise” -
Merriam Webster
It is “having the
necessary ability or
skills:
able to do something
well or well enough
to meet a standard.”
-Merriam Webster
What is
entrepreneurial
competency?
Is a concept of a
collective set of abilities
and/or skills, sufficient
enough or more than
sufficient to organize,
manage, and assume the
risk of a business.
In 1988, the United Nations Conference on
Trade and Development (UNCTAD) through
its Empretec program, identified and
introduced behavioral patterns inherent
and consistent to successful entrepreneurs,
worldwide. These were subsequently
identified as “entrepreneurial
competencies”.
Achievement
• Opportunity seeking
• Persistent
• Commitment to
work contract
• Risk-taking
• Demand for
efficiency and
quality
Planning
• Goal Setting
• Information
seeking
• Systematic
planning and
monitoring
Power
• Persuasion and
networking
• Self-confidence
This refers to a set of competencies
that supports the motive for being
successful in the entrepreneurial
undertaking.
• Oppotunity seeking
A successful entrepreneur is:
Observant - always on the lookout for any opportunity to create
profitable business
Innovative - to be inventive in order to capitalize such
opportunity.
• Persistence
Being steadfast in his/her decisions and cannot be easily
dissuaded when faced with difficulties.
• Commitment to work contract
Doing whatever it takes, making certain sacrifices
to make sure that he/she delivers on time or on the agreed
period with clients.
• Risk-taking
Able to take risks to be able to capitalize on a given opportunity.
One must recognize as well, when to act in order to prevent
further loses.
• Demand for efficiency and quality
Always demands good, if not better quality of products or
services, and keeps on improving from there.
Good practice to this competency is to put yourself in your
client’s shoe.
This refers to a set of competencies that
allows the entrepreneur to organize and
prepare procedures to ensure his/her venture
will keep moving forward.
• Goal setting
Set goal for his venture. Could be a simple goal or a greater one
that can be divided to sub-goals.
Golden rule of thumb to set goal:
SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic,
Time-bound)
• Information seeking
Always keen about information, open minded and always
strives to seek for more information about market,
competition, and his customers.
A well informed entrepreneur can create better ideas on how
to improve his/her product or service - information to
innovation.
• Systematic planning and monitoring
Ability to create well-organized and efficient plan that is
logically sound yet simple or practical.
He/she must have the ability to track (monitor) if the plan is
working or not and be ready to take alternatives when
necessary.
Perhaps one of the most rewarding aspects of
being an entrepreneur is being you own boss.
But you have to worked hard enough to set up
your business efficiently.
“With great power comes
great responsibility”
• Persuasion and networking
Making people believe in you (or in products and services).
Influencing other people’s mind and making them spread
word for you to make them believe in you as well
(networking), that your products or services is better than
others.
• Self-confidence
Refers to a strong belief upon one’s self that you can
complete a task no matter how difficult it might become.
• Identify and study the environment and market
animation industry in your area
• Business environment encompasses how you would like
to run your business internally and externally, tangible
and intangible.
Tangible Factors:
• physical location
• accessibility
• availability and sufficiency of transport mode
• proximity of suppliers and clients
• physical layout and structure of office
Intangible Factors:
• provisions for government regulations pertaining to
chosen business
• political situation in the surrounding area
• culture and demography of the people (population,
economic and social status)
• technology available to support the distribution of your
products or services
• Natural and physical environment - ideal location
• Demography - size or population of potential market
• Culture - people’s way of life
• Government regulations - legality of business
• Economy
⚬ Inflation - increase of general price of goods and services
⚬ Gross Domestic Product
⚬ Unemployment Rate
The principles and the process involved in creating
animation stay the same and the technology or the computer is
nothing but a tool to hasten the process.
• Principles of Animation - skills, processes, techniques,
and styles in creating animation and materials such as:
• Drawing Skill (Talent)
• Compositing through computer graphics
• Coloring
• Storyboarding
• Use of technology (computers and software) as a tool to
produce animation materials more efficiently
• Creating animation effects and special effects
• Documentation of materials
• Start up your own animation business
• Turn in to other animation careers such as:
⚬ Mechanical Animation - modeling parts and pieces of different objects
or machinery
⚬ Science and Engineering - 3D animation production
⚬ Forensic Animation - uses 3D production to re-create or events
⚬ Medical Animation - 3D animation
⚬ Architecture and Landscaping - design discipline for environments
and technical modeling
⚬ Computer Game Animation - entertainment
⚬ Web and Graphic Design Animation
• Positions or job you can get into:
⚬ In-between Artist - creates the transition images for the character’s
movement
⚬ Character Rigger - manipulates the geometry of the character as it
moves or interacts within the scene
⚬ Render-wrangler - monitors or controls the rendering process
⚬ Stop Motion Animator - uses different modeling media like puppets
or clay
• Positions or job you can get into:
⚬ Background Painter - creates backgrounds for animated film
⚬ Lighting Technician - creates lights rigs for shots, correct lightnings
and shadow effects
⚬ Color Key Artist - develops the color scheme for the backgrounds
used in the animated film
⚬ Storyboard Artist - draws scenes that will be used in the film
⚬ Concept Artist - creates overall visual concept for an animated film
⚬ Independent Film-maker - produce animated films outside of major
animation studios
