5. LOOKING BACK
Luke 5:3-11
“Put out into the deep”
“Depart from me, for
I am a sinful man,
Lord”
“Do not be afraid,
henceforth you will
be catching men”
Jesus’ first encounter with
peter
6. “AND HE APPOINTED TWELVE TO BE
WITH HIM AND TO BE SENT OUT TO
PREACH, AND TO HAVE AUTHORITY TO
CAST OUT DEMONS” MK 3.13
“And Judas Iscariot, who
betrayed him”
Mk 3.19
7. Why did Jesus choose
Judas Iscariot as a
disciple if He knew
Judas was going to
betray him?
8. Why did Jesus choose Judas Iscariot
as a disciple if He knew Judas was
going to betray him?
Jesus selected
Judas because
…this was part
of God’s plan
9. Why Jesus Chose Judas?
I do not speak of all of you. I
know the ones I have chosen;
but it is that the Scripture may
be fulfilled, “HE WHO EATS
MY BREAD HAS LIFTED UP
HIS HEEL AGAINST ME.” . . .
He became troubled in spirit . .
. and said, “Truly, truly, I say
to you, that one of you will
betray Me.” The disciples
began looking at one another,
at a loss to know of which one
11. THE HOUR OF TRIAL
JESUS WAS TROUBLED
IN SPIRIT, AND
TESTIFIED, “TRULY, I
SAY TO YOU, ONE OF
YOU WILL BETRAY ME”
JN 13.21
12. JUDAS GIVING
HIMSELF
OVER TO DARKNESS
Jn 12.6: He loved
money and abused the
trust
Is it I
Master?
He made a Pact with the authorities to
serve his own interests at the cost of the
master
13. JOHN 12:6
He did not say this because he
cared about the poor but
because he was a thief; as
keeper of the money bag, he
used to help himself to what
was put into it.
14. OPENING TO THE DOMINION OF DARKNESS
“Then after the morsel, Satan entered him”.
He is now under the dominion of another
Anyone breaking friendship with Jesus does not
become free, but succumbs to other powers
Judas betrays this friendship as he is in the grip
of another force to which he has opened himself
17. JUDAS’ JOURNEY
TO THE TREE
• The remorse. The touch of the
master is still alive.
• “I have sinned in betraying innocent
blood” Mt 27.4
• Now he distances from money. He
throws away his desired silver coins
18. HIS REMORSE BUT TURNS TO
DESPAIR THAN TO
CONVERSION
HE SEES ONLY HIMSELF AND
HIS DARKNESS.
HE NO LONGER SEES THE LIGHT
OF JESUS WHICH CAN
OVERCOME DARKNESS
HE MOVES ON IN THE DARK
WAY AND HANGS ON A TREE
22. PETER’S FALL
• Another kind of fall Resisted
to washing the feet
• Difficulty to accept the
master lowering down to
wash his feet.
• He has not yet understood
the way of Self emptying
(kenosis)
24. PETER’S
HEROISM
• “Though they all fall away,
because of you I will never
fall away”. Mt 26.32-35
• Truly, I say to you, this very
night before the cock crows,
you will deny me three
times”
• “Even if I must die with
you, I will not deny you.”
25. THEN SIMON PETER,
HAVING A SWORD, DREW
IT AND STRUCK THE HIGH
PRIEST’S SLAVE. JN 18. 1’
Peter’s heroism
Simon Peter followed
Jesus, and so did another
disciple. Jn 18.15
26. THE DENIAL
Are you also
one of this
man’s deciples?
His heroism wanes in fear and he denies
I am
not
28. PETER HAS LEANT TO BID FAREWELL
TO THE HEROISM OF PERSONAL
DEEDS AND HAS LEANT THE HUMILITY
OF THE DISCIPLE.
He must lean to wait his
29. HE KEPT
LEARNING
HOW TO WAIT,
HOW TO
PERSEVERE.
He has to walk the way of the disciple in
order to be led, when his hour comes,
to the place, where he does not want to
go (Jn 21.18)
30. CONVERSION INTO THE NEW COVENANT
Peter too died
on the tree
His was a
journey on the
way of the
master
32. Don’t let your “small” vice
become your big downfall. Judas
went from being a petty thief
(Jn. 12:4-6; 13:29), to betraying
the Lord for 30 pieces of silver
(Lk. 6:16) “Small” things like
lying, stealing, cheating,
profanity, alcohol, gambling,
33. •Don’t give the devil a place
in your heart. Judas let the
devil into his heart (Jn. 13:2,
27; Lk. 22:3); was called a
“devil” by Jesus (Jn. 6:70-
71). Make no room in your
heart for the devil (Eph.
34. •Don’t give up on yourself.
Judas did something terribly
wrong and then gave up (Mt.
27:3-7). Don’t give up and
quit like Judas, be like Peter
and come back (Lk. 22:32,
62; Acts 1:15; 2:14)
35. •Don’t think that past association
with Jesus alone will keep you
faithful. Judas had the distinct
privilege of being one of “the
twelve” with Jesus (Mt. 10:1-4;
Jn. 12:4; 18:2). Have Christ in
you, not just around you (Rom.
8:10; 2 Cor. 13:5; Col. 1:27; 3:16)
