Beyond Payroll Market Sector Findings Post HRTech Charles Bedard
This document summarizes the HR technology and services market landscape. It finds the market is bifurcating between leaders growing double digits and laggards seeing single digit or no growth. Demand is driven by a need for outsourced expertise, regulation compliance, and data analytics. Providers offering bundled HRO services and outcomes-oriented data are gaining share. Payroll providers can expand into WFM, HRO, and BPO by leveraging their skills and access to banking systems. The core HR platform market includes payroll processing extended to include HR software, benefits software, time and attendance, and social workforce management software.
Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) has transformed into a true partnership where the clients and the BPO service provider take a deeper ownership of developing, transforming and driving changes with the supporting digital application tools. What can we expect in the future and how will the industry change? How will factors such as pricing and digitalization work in the future? We will share some real-life examples: a few case studies will be presented that describes the challenges our client faced and how they were resolved through partnership with Capgemini BPO.

Offshoring benefits such as lower costs are still valid, but a reassessment is needed. While offshoring saved money initially, hidden costs and wage increases in countries like India have reduced savings. Government actions now prohibit some offshore outsourcing. New risks have also emerged, so strategic objectives and requirements should be re-evaluated to determine if the current offshore model still fits or if onshoring or new options should be considered. A thorough review process assessing business changes, assumptions, costs, quality and objectives is recommended to inform contract renewal decisions.

The Digital OneOffice Framework is all about the design and implementation of the organizational digital experience and the creation of an intelligent, single office to execute and support it. At HfS, our research shows that smart Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions can help break down the barriers between front and back offices to align the needs of the customer with the operations of an organization to service those needs effectively and proactively.
Artificial Intelligence is many things: It is hyped, it is not defined, it is starting to become pervasive, and it is fostering emotional, passionate and at times heated discussions. However, many of those discussions are more focused on either generic or more consumer-facing issues while the broader market is not yet recognizing the impact of AI on B2B and Enterprise segments. Given the blurred perception and the lack of clarity, HfS is aiming to take stock how AI is starting to transform service delivery. With that mind, the research is less about technology aspects rather than understanding the use cases and the way AI could transform organizations journey toward the OneOffice.

What are the AI capabilities and use cases that service providers have built out?
Which are the leading AI technologies and approaches that we are seeing?

1) The document discusses how digital technologies are transforming finance organizations and the skills needed in the finance workforce.
2) CFOs need to align current finance talent with future technology needs while maintaining regulatory requirements.
3) The path forward involves building skills within the current workforce through training, borrowing skills from other parts of the company, and buying new skills through targeted hiring to meet changing needs.
The document discusses the integration of legal technology and legal services. It notes that advances in technology are creating new efficiencies but also a gap between legal and technology professionals. Both lawyers and technology teams want different things from systems - lawyers prioritize costs and strategies while IT focuses on storage, security and maintenance. There is a need for better alignment between these perspectives to implement new technology solutions effectively.

In business operations, global shared services, and outsourcing, the mantra has been: centralize, standardize, industrialize, globalize. Traditional shared services and outsourcing contracts have been developed to focus on “lift and shift” and how to make processes increasingly more efficient and effective, measured by service level agreements. But expectations for services are changing--it’s about more than cost reduction and efficiency.
What happens when the SLAs are green yet customer or stakeholder satisfaction is level, stale, or down? … When you feel that “innovation” is lacking? … That the world is shifting to become faster, more flexible, and in-touch—but your business delivery isn’t and you just don’t have the time to think about it?
In this webinar HfS Research shares key findings and insights from our research, discuss the use and impact of Design Thinking - and Execution - in services engagements for business operations, and share examples.
Key discussion points:
- The relevance of Design Thinking to business operations and outsourcing engagements
- How service providers are integrating Design Thinking principles and practice methods of working internally and with clients
- Recommendations for how service buyers and service providers can use Design Thinking to drive innovation
- Open Q&A about Design Thinking, the Transition to Execution, and Design-Led Culture in Services companies
Pandesic was a joint venture between Intel and SAP to provide low-cost internet-based systems for automating small and medium businesses. It had a strong team but failed to meet sales targets. An analysis found opportunities in the growing e-commerce market but also high buyer power. Pandesic had strengths like its partners but weaknesses in sales. It focused on short-term 30/30 sales strategy instead of its mission. Recommendations included using its sales force better, expanding its customer base, and offering standard e-commerce tools.

This whitepaper discusses the services operations of industrial OEMs over the past 10 years. While aftermarket revenues have grown significantly, growth has mainly been driven by expanding installed bases rather than developing value-added services. OEM services are often not competitive on their own and rely on bundling with high-margin spare parts. The services portion of OEM offerings is held back due to business models focused on product sales that do not properly measure or invest in services. To be successful going forward, OEMs will need to transform their business models to create value from intangible services and overcome what the document calls the "services catch."
This white paper discusses the top 5 reasons that companies outsource customer service functions. The top reasons are: 1) To lower costs, as outsourcing can reduce expenses by 3.5% annually. 2) To generate more revenue through upselling and cross-selling opportunities during customer interactions. 3) To increase customer retention rates by turning potential cancellations into satisfied, retained customers. 4) To gain flexibility in scaling up or down staffing levels to match seasonal or promotional demand surges. 5) To diversify operations by keeping some functions in-house while outsourcing others to access offshore capabilities.
The document discusses how visualisation solutions like Encompass can help law firms achieve operational efficiencies by enabling lean data management. It notes that the legal industry faces challenges like high costs, changing client expectations, and increased competition. Encompass consolidates data from various sources and visually displays links and relationships to help lawyers make faster, better-informed decisions and work more efficiently across borders. This supports applying lean principles to reduce waste and improve productivity, client value, and competitiveness.

In a tight labour market, job-seekers gain bargaining power and leverage it into greater job quality—at least, that’s the conventional wisdom.
Michael, LMIC Economist, presented findings that reveal a weakened relationship between labour market tightness and job quality indicators following the pandemic. Labour market tightness coincided with growth in real wages for only a portion of workers: those in low-wage jobs requiring little education. Several factors—including labour market composition, worker and employer behaviour, and labour market practices—have contributed to the absence of worker benefits. These will be investigated further in future work.
"Does Foreign Direct Investment Negatively Affect Preservation of Culture in the Global South? Case Studies in Thailand and Cambodia."
Do elements of globalization, such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), negatively affect the ability of countries in the Global South to preserve their culture? This research aims to answer this question by employing a cross-sectional comparative case study analysis utilizing methods of difference. Thailand and Cambodia are compared as they are in the same region and have a similar culture. The metric of difference between Thailand and Cambodia is their ability to preserve their culture. This ability is operationalized by their respective attitudes towards FDI; Thailand imposes stringent regulations and limitations on FDI while Cambodia does not hesitate to accept most FDI and imposes fewer limitations. The evidence from this study suggests that FDI from globally influential countries with high gross domestic products (GDPs) (e.g. China, U.S.) challenges the ability of countries with lower GDPs (e.g. Cambodia) to protect their culture. Furthermore, the ability, or lack thereof, of the receiving countries to protect their culture is amplified by the existence and implementation of restrictive FDI policies imposed by their governments.
My study abroad in Bali, Indonesia, inspired this research topic as I noticed how globalization is changing the culture of its people. I learned their language and way of life which helped me understand the beauty and importance of cultural preservation. I believe we could all benefit from learning new perspectives as they could help us ideate solutions to contemporary issues and empathize with others.

COMMENT
As another year begins it
would be wise to revisit
plans
for
business
improvement and cost
reduction.
PwC in its annual Top 100
Law Firms survey found
that only a third of the
Top 11-100 practices had
undertaken
such
an
exercise in 2013.
More worryingly, and consistent with the theme
of previous years surveys, the majority of firms
implementing cost reduction programmes saved
less than 5% of pre-programme costs.
Such results seem at odds with our own
experience working with clients; late last year
we delivered the latest projects to crystallise
over £250,000 worth of annual savings for a
firm on the cusp of the Top 100 – and this
month we’ll report more substantial six-figure
savings for a firm further up the turnover table.
Perhaps the poor results for cost reduction
programmes identified by PwC are related to the
perceived strengths and weaknesses of teams in
back office functions.
Whereas 52% of respondents believe their firm
has a ‘strong’ Finance function, only 7% believe
their firm has a ‘strong’ Procurement function –
which is understandable if, as PwC report, the
majority of firms only use procurement
professionals to support 20% of annual spend.
Essentially ERA’s raison d'être is to fill the
perception / reality gap between the level of
savings firms may expect and benefits firms
actually accrue – and to sustain those savings.

2. ERA recently implemented a Managed Print and
outsourced Print Room solution for the Irish office
of international law firm Eversheds.
As ERA Print Expert Michael Hully explains “Eversheds
produces over 1,500 Case Bibles and prints in excess
of 5 million pages each year – naturally, the firm was
keen to ensure it was getting a high quality service in
the most cost-effective manner.”
Mike Smith, Finance Director at Eversheds explained
why he engaged ERA “We felt that ERA offered us not
just the technical, project, change management and
procurement expertise we required but also that an
independent external view would be essential if we
were to achieve the best possible outcome for the
business”
“ERA’s guidance and expertise was critical to the
successful overhaul of our printing, scanning and
document production facilities.
With their help we now have a Managed Print
infrastructure and outsourced on-site Print Room
service that delivers exactly what our business
needs and that is exceptional value for money.”
Mike Smith,
Finance Director for Eversheds Ireland
The project has delivered much improved facilities and
Print Room services, savings of 38% on the Managed
Print estate and substantial administrative and
secretarial labour efficiencies.
In total, savings could exceed €900,000 over the fiveyear contract term. A full Case Study is available on

CASE
STUDY
Consequently firms are seeking to
harness technology to achieve
competitive advantage.
Many firms have embraced Speech
Recognition as a cost-effective
alternative to dictation. This has
allowed firms to increase fee-earner
headcount without the need for a
proportional increase in support
staff. Even, and perhaps especially,
smaller firms are drawing benefits
by being able to divert support staff
to higher value-added PA-style
roles.
Software is also coming to the aid
of fee earners swamped by the
sheer proliferation of information
