WORK AND LEISURE
IN EVERYDAY LIFE
-
1958
Henri Lefebvre
by Özümcan Demir
26/02/2015
Editor’s Introduction
Ben Highmore
“At the heart of Lefebvre’s
writing is a dialectical
approach based in Marxism.”
“… the everyday always
evidences the potential
for transformation.”
“… emancipatory future had to
be found in the material
actuality of the present.”
“Lefebvre perceives the
everyday as the critical
totality of social life.”
“Lefebvre’s final work pursued
the theme of everyday life by
approaching it as a time-space
that could be open to
‘rhythmanalysis’.”
Critique of

was a criticism of other

The man of our times
carries out in his own

DIALECTICAL
RELATION
Everyday
WORK LEISURE
-  United and contradictory
-  Work-leisure unity
-  Cannot be separated
--------------------------
The life of workers, their
place in division of labor
and in the social system
is reflected in leisure
activities.
BEFORE BOURGEOIS
Individuality, personality
could only develop outside
productive labor.
The man who was able to
develop himself never
worked.
Prisoners of the separation of
manual and intellectual work
e.g. Leonardo Da Vinci,
Montaigne, Descartes etc.
Separated from social
practice and devoted to
leisure alone
Productive labor was merged
with everyday life.
A way of living not
belong to any one
individual but more to a
group, community.
AFTER BOURGEOIS
Individual consciousness:
Private consciousness – Man ‘as man’
Public consciousness – The working man
WORK LEISURE
FAMILY
LIFE
-  It is their unity and their totaliy
and it determines the concrete
individual.
-  The discreteness of the elements of
the everyday implies an alienation,
differentiation and fruitful
contradictions.
Does today’s technology blur the
boundaries between those activities?
¤

LEISURE
Passive attitudes
(watching a film)
Active attitudes
(photography)
Leisure machines(television.
Radio etc.)
Why are people still in
search for active leisure
activities while leisure
machines promotes passive
ones? Or are they really?
¤

LEISURE
-  Liberation from
worry and necessity
-  Distraction
-  Pleasure
-  Relaxation
-  Entertainment
-  As far away from real
life as possible
“‘Modern’ man expects to
find something in leisure
which his work and his
family or private life do
not provide.”
Can smartphones and social
media be counted as leisure
then?
¤

What is it?¤

LEISURE
“But how can this pure
artificiality be created
without permanent
reference to ordinary
life, without the
constantly renewed
contrast that will embody
this reference?”
COMMERCIAL
TECHNIQUE
“Clever images of the everyday are
supplied on a day-to-day basis,
images that can make the ugly
beautiful, the empty full, the
sordid elevated- and the hideous
‘fascinating’.”
Illusory reverse images
-  False world
-  Replace the real by its opposite
-  Offering fiction in response to
the real need for happiness
Exploitation of sex,
sentimentality, crime,
sports etc.
GEORGE FRIEDMANN
leisure---freedom
work---necessity
‘Compensatory leisure’
- organize labor rationally
- organize leisure rationally
- workers express their
personality
Can motivational camps
of big companies be
seen as compensatory
leisure? Or are they
just another form of
man’s exploitation of
man in capitalist
society?
¤

MARXISM
“Does Marx mean that the
individual man will transform
this objective need into an
essentially subjective one? So
that by and in this work he will
eliminate alienation?”
Work is lived as an alien and
oppressive power. Because he is
not working for itself.
Are we choosing our
leisure activities
just for ourselves, or
are we using them as
self promotion tools
to be differentiated
in capitalist society?
¤

CONCLUSIONS
-  There can be alienation in leisure just as in work.
-  Leisure appears as the non-everyday in the everyday.
-  We work to earn our leisure, and leisure has only one
meaning: to get away from work.
-  Work, leisure, family life and private life make up a whole
which can be called ‘global structure’ or ‘totality’.
-  The particular concern will be to extract what is living,
new, positive – the worthwhile needs and fulfillments- from
the negative elements: the alienations.

Are we choosing our leisure activities just for ourselves, or are we using them as self promotion tools to be differentiated in capitalist society? ¤
  • 15. CONCLUSIONS -  There can be alienation in leisure just as in work. -  Leisure appears as the non-everyday in the everyday. -  We work to earn our leisure, and leisure has only one meaning: to get away from work. -  Work, leisure, family life and private life make up a whole which can be called ‘global structure’ or ‘totality’. -  The particular concern will be to extract what is living, new, positive – the worthwhile needs and fulfillments- from the negative elements: the alienations.
