Indonesian lecturers are now encouraged to publish papers in international journals so that they can better disseminate research findings and innovations globally. However, many of them have the problems with English language mastery. This study was aimed at identifying and analyzing language problems of the Indonesian university lecturers in writing English academic papers for international publications. The subjects of the study were 66 randomly selected lecturers of various disciplines other than English Education and English Literature. The data were collected by questionnaire and English writing tasks on phrases, sentences, and paragraphs which were then analyzed descriptively. The results show that language errors and mistakes in grammar, syntax, vocabulary, spelling and word forms were all found in the subjects’ writings. In writing academic papers for international publications, university lecturers faced language problems as constructing phrases and sentences, choosing and using appropriate vocabulary and terms relevant to their topic of study as well as translating their Indonesian sentences into English.

This study aimed to document the demonstrating factors that demotivate college students at the University of Eastern Philippines Main Campus from learning English as a Second Language ESL . Based on the findings, the researchers developed institutional teaching strategies to address demotivation factors. The study employed a descriptive research design. A total of 552 randomly sampled college students enrolled in GE 2 Purposive Communication during the Second Semester of Academic Year 2020 2021 were considered as research participants. The questionnaire was adapted from the study of Gardner 1985 . Findings revealed that with a total weighted mean of 3.46, the respondents are “much demotivated†on the internal factors. On external factors, six 6 categories were found out, teachers' behavior, 3.75 “much demotivated †teachers' competence, 3.63 “much demotivated †classroom learning resource preparedness availability, 3.53, “much demotivated †course content, 3.27 “demotivated †class size, and course assessment and requirements, 3.26 “demotivated.†The 3.39 total weighted mean suggest that they are “demotivated†on external factors. The general weighted mean of 3.43, suggest that they are “much demotivated†on both internal and external factors. To address the demotivating factor issues of the language learners, the researchers came up with institutional teaching strategies framework which the language teachers may employ. Language learning has four basic skills: listening, reading, speaking and writing. Reading skill is the most important skill and valuable for effective learning process. Poor reading skill affects all other skills related to the process of language learning. English language has become an international language and proficiency in all the language skills has become the symbol of success. Students in Pakistan are facing many problems in reading English. The main focus of this paper is to explore the factors affecting students’ low competence in reading English at primary level in Pakistan. The data were collected from government primary schools from the surrounding area of Khudian Khas Kasur. Questionnaires were used to collect data. Few subject experts English were also interviewed. On the basis of the research some recommendations have been made. The present study will help the learners to eradicate their issues in improving their reading skill.
The present study aimed at exploring the abstracts of research articles written by non-native English researchers to uncover the specific characteristics of academic vocabulary employed in the English research articles abstracts.It focuses on frequency and coverage distribution of the words from the Academic Word List (Coxhead, 2000) in the abstracts of research articles. The source of data for this corpus study was gathered from 97 abstracts written by the EFL researchers and published by the Journal Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Missio at STKIP St. Paulus Ruteng from 2015 until 2018. The results of this study revealed that the coverage of K1, the first most frequent 1000 English words, is the most dominant lexical items applied by the researchers. It covered 71.33% of the texts. The representation of lexical items that belong to K2, the second most frequent 1000 English words, covered 5.44% of all the words used by the writers in their abstracts. Moreover, the presence of Academic Word List, which refers to a list of 570 word families that are commonly found in academic texts and Off-list, which refers to the words that do not belong to K1 or K2 because it is related to certain field, has slight difference over all of the texts where the former covers 11.95% and the later covers 11.26%. As far as the findings of the present study are concerned, the room for some improvements on academic words applied in the abstracts need to pay attention.

The aim of this research was to analyze the needs on integrative contentbased Indonesian language learning materials about agriculture for foreign speakers A2 level. Research and development design was used employing the Dick and Carey’s model combined with Borg and Gall’s model, as well as the model of learning materials development proposed by Tomlinson, Brown, and Jolly and Bolitho. This research was conducted during the foreign students indonesian course, Bogor Agricultural University on academic year 2015-2017. The procedure comprised: pre-study, students’ and teachers’ needs analysis on teaching materials at BIPA IPB. The findings indicated that the teaching materials about agriculture are not available yet at IPB. Besides, the needs on integrative content-based Indonesian language learning materials about agriculture for students at A2 level and the teachers were indicated high. Therefore, Indonesian language teaching material is needed for foreigners specifically for agriculture.

Factors Affecting the Reading Comprehension Level of Grade VI Learners of Sel...SubmissionResearchpa
This study probed on factors affecting the reading comprehension among 264 Grade Six learners in the three selected schools in the District of Tanza Cavite for the academic year 2018-2019. The researcher aptly considered the descriptive method of research using Phil-IRI Test and a researcher- made questionnaire as data gathering instruments. The gathered data were analyzed through percentage, mean, arbitrary scale with its corresponding adjectival interpretation, and the Pearson product moment of correlation. The singular hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that majority of the Grade VI learners comprised the instructional level of reading comprehension; the parent, home, teacher and learner factors all have moderate extent of association to the learners’ level of reading comprehension; and that the parent factor had a weak association with learners’ level of reading comprehension, while home, teacher and learner factors have had a negligible association with learners’ reading comprehension level. Furthermore, it revealed that the all the factors considered significantly affect the reading comprehension of the 6th Grade learners. The researcher therefore recommends Reading/English teachers and school managers to expose students with variety of reading materials so it can positively affect learners level of reading comprehension; and that the external stakeholders must be informed on the relevance of reading activities at school and at home to ensure that learners will be molded holistically. by Amado Montera Cadiong 2020. The purpose of this study was to describe the use of newspapers as a source for English
Language Acquisition. Its aim was to investigate the extent of which newspapers can affect and enhance the
learning of English language. The Technical English curricular aims to extent learners’ English language
proficiency in order to meet their needs, in everyday life including for knowledge acquisition purposes, and for
workplace use. Effectiveness learning entails learning beyond the classroom. In this regard, newspaper may be
a good resource that can be used to promote and enhance English language learning. This study explored
whether newspaper as an alternative to the textbook able to arouse learners’ interests in learning English.

This study was conducted in Institute Latihan Perindustrian Kuala Lumpur (ILPKL) to obtain students’
views on using the newspapers and to access the effects of its use on their learning. The quantitative modes used
for the data collections. The findings of the study indicated that the use of newspapers did indeed have positive
effect on learners. For the benefit of learners, it is therefore hoped that there, would be greater usage of
newspaper as source for English language acquisition in the classroom.
This study explored the trends in students’ achievement in Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) in Further Mathematics in Kwara State, Nigeria. The study adopted descriptive research design of ex-post factor type. The sample comprised all Further Mathematics students in 79 public senior secondary schools with 3 Local Government Areas in Kwara State. Two research questions were raised and answered in the study. Frequency count, Percentage and Autoregressive (AR) processes for modelling of time series analyses were used to analyse the data. The results revealed that the trend of students’ achievement in WASSCE Further Mathematics from 2007 to 2016 was stochastic with random walk steadily progressive and percentage of the students obtained credit ranged from 23.0 to 77.3; pass ranged from 18.2 to 72.2 and fail ranged from 0.0 to 25.8. It was recommended among others that stakeholders in education should improve the quest for scientific literacy particularly for science-based subjects and further Mathematics curriculum should be all inclusive and non-discriminating to allow development of problem solving ability.
A Correlational Analysis of Students’ Achievement in WASSCE and NECO (SSCE) M...iosrjce
This study presents the findings of the relationship between students’ achievement in Senior School
Certificate Examination (SSCE) Mathematics conducted by the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and
the National Examination Council (NECO) in four selected secondary schools in Ifedayo Local Government
Area , Osun State, Nigeria.
The analysis showed that there is significant positive relationship between Mathematics in all the selected
schools contrary to the hypothesis that says there is no relationship in West African Senior School Certificate
Examination (WASSCE) and Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) NECO Mathematics results in the
schools.
It is therefore recommended that students should develop more interest in sitting for either of the two
examinations since they produce equivalent results.

This study aimed at investigating the effect of a computerized program on developing vocabulary and
reading comprehension of Iranian EFL learners. For this aim, the researcher chose a representative sample of
sixty first grade female high school students in Bushehr, south of Iran. The participants were divided into two
equivalent groups and each group consisted of 30 students. The researcher used three instruments: 1) an
achievement test for reading comprehension 2) vocabulary test 3) a computerized program for vocabulary and
reading texts included in the English book 1 of high school. The results of the study revealed that the
computerized program was effective to develop the vocabulary and reading comprehension skills for first
grade high school students. In the light of these findings, the researcher recommends that EFL Iranian teachers
should use CALL as a tool for enhancing students' vocabulary and reading comprehension in particular and
learning the language in general.

This paper examined cooperative learning and academic achievement of students in English
language in Imo State. The study adopted quasi experimental pre-test, post-test control group design. The
sample for the study consisted of twenty (20) SS2 Students, purposively selected from two classes in a senior
secondary school in Imo State. The instrument used for the study was the English Language Achievement
Test (ELAT). Section A of the ELAT contained the bio-data of the respondents while section B consisted
of 30 multiple-choice question items. The research questions were answered using mean rating to determine the
difference between the pre-test and the post-test while the hypothesis was tested using Analysis of Covariance
(ANCOVA) at 0.05 level of significance. The findings indicated that there was a significant difference
between the achievement mean scores of subjects in the cooperative learning group and those in the control
group. The study revealed that Cooperative Learning plays a significant role in students’ academic
achievement in English Language. The paper therefore, recommended the retraining of teachers towards using
cooperative learning for student’s optimal academic achievement

ABSTRACT: In language teaching and learning, textbooks can play a very important role. As Riazi (2002)
stated,textbooks are the second effective factor in every classroom after the teacher. Therefore, choosing an
appropriate textbook for a class has been one of the most essential tasks for teachers and curriculum planners.
Thus, it is clear that evaluating a textbook is of great importance in order to achieve the desired objectives.In
this paper, Littlejohn‟s framework (1998) is employed in this attempt with the aim of evaluating the New
Interchange Serieswritten by Richards, Hull and Proctor (2006). This framework evaluates theselected textbook
regardless of how it is used in the classroom. In sum, the analysis indicated that the New Interchange
Seriesdon‟temploy learners or the teachers as a source for its content; rather, they pay attention mainly on pair
works and meaning. They also encourage students to use the language, andmore importantly they usually
require them to talk and discuss rather than to be a listener.However, there were some parts, including
retrieving, repetition and written extended discourse, that need to be taken into better consideration.
Reading is a pivotal skill for non-English department students as a vehicle to
update their knowledge. One of reading activity which is beneficial is
extensive reading. Several studies have proved the advantage of extensive
reading, but study regarding what reading material is read by students is
under explored. To fill this gap, this research aimed to uncover what nonEnglish
department
students
read
during
extensive
reading
program
and
why
they
chose that theme. The participants were Agroecotechnology students
(n=52). The data was collected from the reading log sheet and participant
interview. The reading log sheet was analyzed by the researcher to find the
theme of the text that students read. The interview was conducted in
Indonesian to make students at ease. After the interview, the transcript was
written and translated into English. The result shows that there are 32 types
of themes with various frequency distributions. Theme that students read is
mainly caused by their hobby, favorite idol, and a senior student who
influence them to read certain theme.

ABSTRACT: In language teaching and learning, textbooks can play a very important role. As Riazi (2002)
stated,textbooks are the second effective factor in every classroom after the teacher. Therefore, choosing an
appropriate textbook for a class has been one of the most essential tasks for teachers and curriculum planners.
Thus, it is clear that evaluating a textbook is of great importance in order to achieve the desired objectives.In
this paper, Littlejohn‟s framework (1998) is employed in this attempt with the aim of evaluating the New
Interchange Serieswritten by Richards, Hull and Proctor (2006). This framework evaluates theselected textbook
regardless of how it is used in the classroom. In sum, the analysis indicated that the New Interchange
Seriesdon‟temploy learners or the teachers as a source for its content; rather, they pay attention mainly on pair
works and meaning. They also encourage students to use the language, andmore importantly they usually
require them to talk and discuss rather than to be a listener.However, there were some parts, including
retrieving, repetition and written extended discourse, that need to be taken into better consideration.
Reading is a pivotal skill for non-English department students as a vehicle to
update their knowledge. One of reading activity which is beneficial is
extensive reading. Several studies have proved the advantage of extensive
reading, but study regarding what reading material is read by students is
under explored. To fill this gap, this research aimed to uncover what nonEnglish
department
students
read
during
extensive
reading
program
and
why
they
chose that theme. The participants were Agroecotechnology students
(n=52). The data was collected from the reading log sheet and participant
interview. The reading log sheet was analyzed by the researcher to find the
theme of the text that students read. The interview was conducted in
Indonesian to make students at ease. After the interview, the transcript was
written and translated into English. The result shows that there are 32 types
of themes with various frequency distributions. Theme that students read is
mainly caused by their hobby, favorite idol, and a senior student who
influence them to read certain theme.

ABSTRACT : This study aims to investigate the problems and challenges which is usually experienced by
English learner's students in the Saudi universities when trying to speak English. It also checks at the problems
that students face when learning English language in Saudi universities and try to find remedies to this problem.
The research uses a questionnaire, interviews, and descriptive methods in the collection of data about fluency in
English language in universities in KSU as an example. The data was then statistically analyzed using the SPSS
program. The results showed that there are various problems which hinder fluency of English learning in the
universities and among them include: under-qualified teachers, unsuitable teaching materials and the methods
used in teaching are also poor. The other problem is the psychological factor which makes student lack
motivation while learning English. The study also contains ways in which these problems can be handled to
bring efficiency in learning and teaching English in Saudi universities.

Although colleges have offered academic writing courses, many students
still struggle with this writing ability. Their poor writing skills are also
associated with a lack of teacher guidance The tasks given by teachers are
sometimes beyond their capabilities. Students are not accustomed to writing
long academic papers. As a result, they do not enjoy writing essays, and they
are not confident in their writing skills. This research is intended to collect
and analyze articles related to Academic Writing Courses and the teaching
of academic writing at colleges. The design used is a literature review,
articles are collected using search engines such as JStore, Academic One
file, Sciencedirect, and Proquest. The criteria for the articles used are those
published in 2008-2021. Based on the articles collected the result is that
academic writing centers (AWC) does not guarantee better grades for the

The study aims to explore the problems and difficulties of students speaking
English language for Engineering students hailing from rural background. The study

This paper focuses on the ways to highlight the needs for developing the productive skills of the fresh students, at the University of Computer Studies Pakokku , Myanmar. This paper explores the strategies to enable the learners to communicate among themselves in their daily life. It also includes an eclectic approach to the current methodologies and the implementation of teaching writing and speaking strategies. Then needs analysis is used in order to investigate the actual needs of the students. To achieve successful learning in class, suggested activities are also provided. As writing and speaking have many features in common, by deliberately controlling a number of variables, language teachers can make writing closer to speaking and improve students' speaking skill through writing activities and vice visa. out to maximize the BIPA learning process. This research uses a qualitative approach with an exploratory case
study type. The results of this research are that careful planning and preparing the curriculum from the start is
needed, especially in making learning plans. For lecturers, it is important to know the characteristics and
language skills of BIPA students who come to study so they can make appropriate learning plans. Furthermore,
in the BIPA learning process, it is known that there is time management that needs to be improved by lecturers
and students. Then, the learning media used by the three universities has been implemented well, but the
learning process is still being developed by lecturers because sometimes it is not in accordance with the needs of
students whose speaking skills are still low.

The aim of this research study is to analyze the appropriateness of the English syllabus according to the true language needs, which is being offered to the students of International Relations Department of Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan. To carry out this research study, students of IR department (Part 1 and 2) have been taken as a sample population to collect required data. To check the appropriateness of the offered English syllabus and existing level of English language competence according to the students’ needs; two research tools have been taken as: test and interview. In order to get the actual feedback from the students, a test consisted of four basic skills of English (listening, speaking, reading and writing) was conducted to 50 students of IR department. Interview was conducted to the teachers of IR department in order to get the actual information about the appropriateness of the English syllabus and the competency level of the students. Collected data through both the sources were analyzed qualitatively as well as quantitatively. The findings from these sources provided the results which were expected before the accomplishment of this research work. The findings of this research advocated that the EAP should be adopted to make the existing syllabus appropriate and need based in order to refine the basic English language skills of the students. This recommended course is very productive for social sciences disciplines of the BZU.

This systematic literature review (SLR) aimed to investigate the potential of digital online game-based learning (DOGBL) to enhance motivation in English as a foreign language (EFL). Online gaming has grown in popularity among students, opening up the possibility of using games as powerful instructional resources. Academic achievement depends on motivation, and this study, led by self-determination theory (SDT), explored how external rules, like rewards and recognition, could increase motivation in EFL utilizing DOGBL. The study used the SLR method, examining databases and choosing articles based on predetermined criteria. The chosen publications were examined in-depth, and a preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) diagram was employed for analysis. For results, DOGBL could enhance teaching EFL by providing flexible and interesting learning environments. Key elements in motivating in DOGBL included game design, personalization, social engagement, curricular integration, and instructor assistance. As a promising method to improve EFL instruction, game-based learning, especially DOGBL, saw considerable developments between 2018 and 2023. Thus, these ground-breaking techniques transformed the way people learn English vocabulary and provided a fun and engaging way to learn the language. For educators and students, the potential for DOGBL to change EFL education is still exciting as technology develops.

This study aims to explain the importance of transforming the values of Bima's local wisdom "Nggusu Waru" through the media of social studies e-books. The results and conclusions of this study are efforts to develop students' social character that require teacher collaboration, supervision, and optimal parental attention so that their interest in learning is higher and minimizes deviant behavior. This research method uses research and development design. At the stage of preliminary studies with models developed by Borg and Gall. Through several stages of research, information gathering, development of initial forms of products, and initial field testing. In this step, data is collected through interviews, observation and documentation. The data is analyzed to find out some of its weaknesses and shortcomings.
This research investigated the pre-service teachers’ self-regulation, selfefficacy, and mathematics performance in blended learning during the post Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in a state university using a descriptive correlational design. There were 201 pre-service teachers who were identified using simple random sampling. They answered the two-set survey questionnaire, which assessed their self-regulation and self-efficacy, while their performances were assessed using their grades in the subject. The data gathered were treated using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results revealed that they had high self-regulation while they had a very high level of self-efficacy. At the same time, they had a very satisfactory performance in mathematics. Moreover, their self-regulation in terms of planning, monitoring, and adjusting was significantly correlated with their math performance while reflecting is not. However, no significant relationship was found between their self-efficacy and mathematics performance. Thus, instructors are encouraged to conduct monitoring during blended learning to encourage pre-service teachers to maintain their high level of self-regulation and self-efficacy in learning mathematics. In addition, future researchers may explore the same variables to validate the findings of the study because these findings are limited only to pre-service teachers and were conducted during the post COVID-19 pandemic.
This study explores the correlation between technology utilization and language acquisition while analyzing the impact of moderating variables on this relation. Our meta-analysis approach analyzes data from 43 extracts out of 19 primary studies published between 2012 and 2021. Our data analysis employs a random-effect model utilizing a significance level of α = 0.05. Additionally, the authors examine four moderating variables: level of education, location of research, proficiency in language, and year of publication. Technology-based language acquisition outperforms traditional methods, indicating a significant and moderate impact on the learning process. This study enhances comprehension of the efficacy of technology in language acquisition by identifying various factors, such as the geographical location of research, methods of assessing language proficiency, and technology type employed. However, there is insufficient evidence to support the notion that educational level or sample size significantly impact technology-based language acquisition. This meta-analysis highlights the importance of considering nuanced factors when integrating technology into language learning. The findings emphasize the possibility of technology to transform methods of acquiring language and urge additional investigation into customized strategies that optimize its advantages.
Effective science instruction in a blended learning approach is synonymous with the strategic use of instructional videos (IVs) to fill the gap in teacher support. This study aims to determine the IVs’ effectiveness in improving students' concept retention and overall learning experiences. The experimental group was exposed to instruction integrating IVs via embedded mixed-method design, whereas the control group was exposed to traditional lecture methods. The results showed that students' post-test scores and concept retention improved significantly in the experimental group, where students reported better learning experiences than in the control group. This beneficial effect of a technology-integrated approach can be attributed to various elements of IVs, such as engaging content, motion graphics, video length, the language used, and the speaker's perspective. This study recommends that IVs be used to enhance learning opportunities and results in the teaching and learning process.
Higher order thinking skills (HOTS) are an important element in facing the challenges of the 21 st-century. Difficulty in solving problems systematically, facing challenges in an organized manner, and being unable to design original solutions are due to the low HOTS that students have. HOTS ability can improve students who low-level thinking skills in several ways, for example, through learning integrated with media, practice, and assessment or HOTS-based cognitive assessment. The purpose of this study was to develop and implement a HOTS-based cognitive assessment to assess students' HOTS abilities. The device development model used is an adaptation of the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation (ADDIE) model. The research sample consisted of 30 students in class 11 of the Governance and Office Automation Competency Program of Vocational High School 1 Kudus. The result is that 11 students have the HOTS ability with very good criteria, 17 well criteria, and 2 enough criteria. This study suggests that a test instrument for further research is to measure students' HOTS ability. The Experts conclude that HOTS-based cognitive assessment can be used as an approach to improve students' HOTS to actively think selectively and supported by logical argumentation.
The background of this research is the need for teacher innovation in developing digital-based learning media in Indonesian language learning. The research method used is research and development (R&D) with the analysis, design, develop, implement, and evaluate (ADDIE) model, which consists of five research stages: analysis, planning, development, implementation, and evaluation. Data collection techniques are questionnaires, in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation that present the results regarding innovation, features, applications, and the impact of using the benkangen game in learning Indonesian in elementary school. The subjects of this study were 25 teachers from 25 elementary schools, and 66 students from 10 elementary schools in Magelang district and Magelang city. The results showed innovation in the development of game applications based on Magelang local wisdom with game features in the form of puzzles of Magelang culture and local wisdom, Indonesian language learning materials packaged in the form of questions accompanied by the number of points in each answer, and audio that reflects local wisdom in Central Java. The novelty of this research is the development of the benkangen game based on Magelang local wisdom, which still needs to be developed by teachers in Indonesia. Future research needs to explore the innovation of Indonesian language learning games through the latest software.
The specific processes, techniques, and actions that learners take to facilitate their language learning have been widely explored under the concept of language learning strategies (LLS); however, more exploration is needed about recent investigations in this area, as calls for new theorization of strategies research have emerged. This systematic literature review aimed at exploring the prevailing research methodologies and educational settings appertaining to LLS in English as foreign language (EFL) contexts. The study analyzed 42 articles published from 2017 to 2023 in journals in the field of social sciences in the Scopus and ERIC databases. The findings show how non-intervention quantitative approaches are predominant in LLS research, occasionally accompanied by qualitative data collection methods. Accordingly, most research has favored descriptive and correlational designs, identifying the relationships between the use of strategies and variables such as language proficiency, demographic aspects, motivation, and self-regulation. Grounded on the revision of existing evidence, this article advises future strategy-based research to focus on primary and secondary levels of education, strategy instruction, cultural aspects, and qualitative research designs.
This study aimed to i) analyse learning problems in science at boarding schools for junior high school students and ii) determine the effectiveness of science learning in the context of Islamic teachings using the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, -religion (STEM-R) approach to improve reflective and critical thinking skills. The research method applied in this study was a sequential exploratory mixed method. The research design consisted of five stages: i) qualitative data gathering, ii) qualitative data analysis, iii) quantitative data gathering, iv) quantitative data analysis, and v) data interpretation. The subjects of this study were 192 students from boarding schools and were divided into 6 groups. The research results obtained were the school, parents, science teachers and religion teachers’ vision and mission causing students to like or dislike science. An excellent teacher is viewed by students as someone who can make learning enjoyable, exhibit creativity in presenting educational material, possess the ability to motivate, link science and religion, engage in investigative activities, infuse humour, establish connections between science and everyday life, and communicate concepts effectively. Moreover, distinctions in reflective thinking and critical thinking abilities were observed between the experimental group and the control group. Learning that connects science and Islamic religion and examines STEM-R aspects is able to develop students' thinking skills.
This study aims to reveal the profile of open-start problem-solving with ethnomathematics regarding student learning styles. This research is a qualitative research study on 3 out of 31 students of Junior High School of 3 Magetan taken by purposive sampling. The three students carried out four stages: understanding the problem, planning problem-solving strategies, implementing problem-solving strategies, and reviewing again. The results of the research show that students with a visual learning style solve problems by understanding problems through writing known and being asked and drawing illustrations, planning problem-solving strategies by making examples, carrying out solving strategies by working on the calculation process; students with an auditory learning style solve problems by understanding problems through writing known and being asked, planning strategies by making problems and formulating formulas used, implementing solutions by doing calculations and reviewing; students with a kinesthetic learning style solve problems by understanding issues through writing known and being asked, making examples and writing the formulas used, carrying out solving strategies by applying the calculation process and reviewing the results obtained. However, of the three styles, the results of the accepted work were not correct because they did not write down the conclusions and were not thorough enough.
The volunteer function inventory (VFI) is an assessment tool to measure individual volunteer motivation. VFI measures individual motivation to volunteer by examining the functional motives of each volunteer. This research aimed to adapt the VFI to the Indonesian language. VFI consists of 30 items divided into five dimensions. This study utilized a non-experimental quantitative research method. Samples were acquired by accidental random sampling with N = 176. In this study, reliability testing was carried out with items and dimensions of Cronbach's α. Validity tests were examined using construct validity and item analysis. The results of the Indonesian version of VFI showed high reliability and validity. Besides, the item analysis also shows that the quality of each item is excellent. The Indonesian version of VFI will be suitable for various education fields in Indonesia to measure the students' voluntary willingness in community development activities, for example, in measuring the impact of volunteerism in the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) social activities and other activities within the communities.
Digital history-based project-based learning (PjBL) in history learning is a learning medium that can provide a special attraction for students who can improve historical concept skills and historical awareness. However, there are still many teachers who have not used it, so it is very important to study it. This research aims to analyze the influence of the digital history based PJBL model in improving historical concept skills and historical awareness. The method used is quasi-experimental with two classes, experimental and control. The population used class XI high school students in Lampung, Indonesia and the sample size was 213. Cluster random sampling was used to determine sampling, while data collection was in the form of test instruments. The test instrument questions were analyzed using the gain score and Kruskal-Walli’s test to determine the increase in historical concept skills and historical awareness with the help of statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS) 26. The research results confirmed that digital history based PjBL was effective in increasing historical concept skills and historical awareness with a high score, making it the best choice to overcome obstacles in history learning.
This study aims to determine how using an active learning model based on the three higher education principles can improve students' active learning. Qualitative research methods were applied in this study, with data collection through interviews, literature study, and observation. The results showed that active learning based on the three higher education principles was included in the "good" or "acceptable" category. The application of this model can make this campus a place with a positive academic atmosphere that enhances and supports collaboration, discussion, and positive and critical thinking. The novelty of this research lies in the use of active learning with mini-research projects, which are developed based on university principles and embody it. The hope is that this can help solve problems in the student learning process at the State Islamic University Sunan Kalijaga, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The expected implication is that the university's policy supports applying the model to resolve learning problems and build real scientists for students.
Integration of information and communication technology (ICT) in teacher education is a means to support the teaching and learning process. Good teaching by utilizing technology certainly requires changes, especially in the realm of pedagogy, but teachers apparently do not have enough ability to optimize ICT in the learning process. In fact, ICT has the potential to provide various benefits for teachers and students, including joint learning areas, cooperative and collaborative learning opportunities. Therefore, this research aims to identify the use of mobile learning application (MLA) and its impact as a form of ICT integration in learning. The method used is literature study, by taking data from various relevant scientific articles and books. Data analysis uses descriptive analysis from the results of the synthesis of several literature reviews obtained. The research results show that a number of 10 main articles and 15 relevant supporting articles as well as several book sources show that mobile-based learning with smartphone devices is becoming a trend at various levels of education, both academic and vocational.
Incorporating ethnoscience into lessons through the ethnoscience-students’ worksheet (ESW) is one method to improve student interest in science learning while introducing them to the local culture. However, no research was reported the effects of ESW on students' responses and the factors that influence ESW implementation in science learning. In order to better understand how students learn through ESW, this study investigated the relationship between ethnoscience context, science learning, and the implementation of students’ worksheets. Seventy-two students participated in the survey after they studied ethnoscience learning through ESW. Students’ responses are more influenced by science learning. In addition, the ethnoscience-integrated students’ worksheets (SW) variable indirectly affects students’ responses. Additionally, ESW affects students' responses more significantly than science learning and ethnoscience. This research provides insightful implications for educators on planning, designing, and practicing ESW to enhance students’ problem-solving motivation and academic achievement. Furthermore, to contribute significantly to future researchers, further research employed the structural equation model through covariance analysis, also known as confirmatory factor analysis (CFA).
This research aimed to assess the readiness of Indonesian pre-service science teachers by examining their perceptions of impending challenges, desired competencies, and anticipated instructional methodologies in preparing for the challenges of Society 5.0. Using a quantitative survey research methodology, 884 pre-service science teachers from 16 universities were surveyed. The research instrument's validity and reliability were assessed utilizing the Rasch model. Inferential statistics were employed to assess the readiness of pre-service science teachers for future challenges, taking into account their backgrounds. The test outcomes showed the Cronbach's Alpha coefficient reached 0.92, is deemed "excellent", affirming the instrument's high reliability. The findings of the study revealed that the majority of teachers share a consistent perception of future challenges and recognize the importance of mastering 21st-century skills, particularly critical thinking, creative thinking, communication, and collaboration. However, respondents believe that the current learning process does not adequately train these skills. They expressed a desire for an alternative learning method that can enhance their skills while accommodating their diverse backgrounds, including place of residence, economic background, and technological proficiency. Further research is needed to identify alternative teaching methods that can effectively foster these abilities in diverse backgrounds.
The issue of psychological well-being in education has emerged as an increasingly critical topic in recent years. This is due to the significance of psychological well-being in enhancing the performance of e ducational institutions, encompassing students, teachers, and the process of formulating school policies. This study sought to discover recent research on psychological well-being from an academic perspective. A total of 27 research articles were successfully gathered and reviewed based on the established criteria. This article review was conducted utilizing two databases (SCOPUS and WoS) and the following keywords: "psychological well-being" combined with "AND" and other search terms such as "school", "teacher", and "student". This systematic review offers a synthesis of results that can serve as the initial step in developing constructs of psychological well-being in educational institutions, thus implying the importance of psychological well-being for teachers and students. The results of the analysis from this systematic literature review have been discussed and concluded in this study.
This study aims to investigate Indonesian senior high school teachers’ perceptions of using the first language (L1) when teaching English because Indonesian teachers tend to have negative perceptions toward the application of the L1, while the L1 is needed in a situation where Indonesian students have limited skills in English. The semi-structured interview was applied to collect data, while thematic analysis was used to analyse it. The result showed that the teachers have three different positions in perceiving the use of the L1: the virtual position, maximal, and optimal positions. Although they have different perceptions toward the application of the L1, a major insight can be concluded about the limited use of the L1 for specific reasons, such as considering teachers’ and students’ English abilities, learners’ needs, and the type and the difficulty of the given task or assignment. The L1 can be functioned as scaffolding in three aspects: when teaching grammar, vocabulary, and when giving instructions. Teachers may consider this study’s results as the information to use the L1 in classrooms. This may also be beneficial for Indonesian educational stakeholders and the government to specifically define what type of scaffolding that teachers can use the L1 to teach English.
The Smile project is an engineering service-learning initiative carried out through collaboration between Chouaib Doukkali University in Morocco and Pusan National University in South Korea. Since 2016, this project has been conducted annually for engineering students from both universities. Participants are selected through an oral interview, ensuring representation from different majors, years, and genders. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the project transitioned to an online mode starting from 2020. The objective of this article is to investigate the impact of the service-learning approach on learning and its potential for enhancing engineering education. This study aims to compare the face-to-face and online implementations of the Smileproject as examples of this educational approach. The analysis demonstrates a strong positive effect of engineering service-learning as a learning approach, leading to the improvement of engineering students' skills and competencies. Notably, there is minimal difference between the two implementation modes of this learning approach.
Assessment is an important component of learning which aims to determine student achievement in learning. However, the pandemic has changed how assessment is carried out, prompting teachers to look for new strategies in carrying out mathematics learning assessments under any conditions, whether in normal conditions or during a pandemic. This study described the strategies used by high school mathematics teachers in assessing mathematics learning during the pandemic towards the post-pandemic period. This type of research is descriptive exploratory research with a qualitative approach. The subjects in this study were three mathematics teachers, three principals, and three vice principals from a public senior high school in Yogyakarta City, Indonesia. Qualitative data were collected by means of questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively according to Bogdan and Biklen. The results of the study reveal that the mathematics teacher’s strategy for carrying out assessments during a pandemic includes: i) determining the appropriate online assessment platform that suits the needs; ii) assessment based on student participation; iii) using various of online assessment methods; iv) prioritizing academic integrity and honesty in the assessment implementation; and v) carry out the management and reporting of data on the results of the assessment in accordance with established procedures.

The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.

especially written by lecturers and researchers by providing them with research grants of various schemes
[8], technical assistance [9], and even financial rewards for those successfully publishing papers in reputable
international journals [10]. This commitment is very important and therefore, lecturers and researchers
should positively respond to it by improving their ability in writing research papers.
Until the end of 2017, the record of Indonesian International scientific publication was still low [4,
11, 12]. The data of Scimago Journal & Country Ranks 2017 [13] listed Indonesia the 8th
in Asiatic Region
after China, India, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Singapore. Indonesia had 19,098 documents,
18,683 citable documents, 0.21 citation per document, and H-index 196, while Malaysia as the most
productive country in ASEAN region in the same year produced 31,043 documents, in which 29,606 are
citable, 0.36 citations per document and H-index 249. The gap of productivity between these two countries
was still wide. These data suggest that there be many things the Indonesian lecturers and researchers, together
with the government, need to do to be able to compete to its neighboring countries. As the biggest country in
ASEAN with the biggest number of universities [14–16] with more than 27,500 lecturers [17], Indonesia
should have been the leading country in creating records of international scientific publications.
Some factors are often blamed as the major causes of low productivity of Indonesian lecturers in
writing and publishing scientific papers for international publication. Among others are work load, budget
availability, and English language mastery [18, 19]. To overcome the language barrier, there have been
efforts by universities and the government such as language trainings, writing clinics, and the likes for
lecturers but currently the problem lingers. English language mastery still becomes the barrier of Indonesian
lecturers and researchers in writing and publishing papers in international journals [12]. Lecturers’
competence in English is generally low [20]. A study of non-English lecturers’ reading competence in
Central Java also suggests that lecturers, especially the non-English lecturers, have poor English reading
because of negative attitude and low motivation towards English reading [21]. The day-to-day language of
most Indonesian lecturers inside and outside classrooms is Bahasa Indonesia. It is the national language
which also serves as the language of instruction. Most lecturers and students speak and write in Bahasa
Indonesia. For the purpose of international publication, some lecturers may genuinely write the manuscripts
themselves in English but some others may go to translators for help.
Until the recent days, while a lot effort have been done to improve Indonesian lecturers’ ability in
writing academic papers for international publications, there have been only a few studies on the ability and
problems the university lecturers are facing. A study by Arsyad and Purwa, at al. [19] identified factors
hindering Indonesian lecturers in writing and publishing papers for reputable international journals, their
attitude towards writing and publishing, and necessary steps to help them improve their ability. The study
involved lecturers of Linguistics, Applied Linguistics and Language Education as the respondents. Another
study by Arsyad [22] on rhetorical styles of Indonesian authors in writing introduction section of research
journals did not address the issue of language problems. Other studies as the one by Azizah and Budiman
[23] though addressed the problems and challenges in writing papers for international journals, the
respondents of the study were graduate students, not lecturers. Considering the above mentioned facts, the
study was important as it could fill a research niche on topic of lecturers’ language problem in writing papers
for international publication, and may serve as an initiating study for further research and discussions. More
specifically, the study was aimed at answering the question of what language problems the lecturers were
facing when writing English academic papers prepared for international publications.
2. RESEARCH METHOD
This was a descriptive study involving sixty-six non-English lecturers who were working in a
private university in Semarang Central Java. They were randomly selected from different study pr
ograms/departments and faculties as medicine, engineering, law, business, education, psychology, nursing,
education as well as Islamic studies. Majority of them hold Master Degree (80.30%), while the rest 19.70%
had Ph.D. degree. Forty respondents (60.61%) were female, 26 respondents (39.39%) were male. Forty eight
point forty eight percent of them had been serving as lecturers for more than 8 years, while the rest had been
working for less than 8 years. Concerning their experience in international publication, 28.79 percent of them
claimed to have ever published papers internationally, while the rest have never done.
Two types of data were collected. The first data were the identification of the perceived problems of
non-English lecturers in writing for papers for international publication. This type of data was collected by
using questionnaire consisting of 8 statements requesting a dichotomous response of “Yes” or “No” which
was written in Bahasa Indonesia. This type of subjective dichotomous questions/statements [24] was chosen
under practical consideration namely easy processing and screening ability. The second type of data was the
writing samples elicited from the lecturers through tasks. For the purpose of the study, the researchers took
only around 25% of the total respondents (16 persons). They were randomly selected from the total

respondents and were given a task to write in English 8 Indonesian phrases and 7 Indonesian sentences (see
appendix). They did the task during a session of writing training conducted by the researchers. The second
task was paragraph writing. The lecturers were asked to write some paragraphs on a topic they were
interested in or thinking of writing, and submitted them to the researchers within a week. However, until the
end of the week, only 10 lecturers submitted the tasks; some were sent by email and others were sent in
printed forms. These 3 data were to identify possible language problems the lecturers had in writing English.
3. RESULTS AND ANALYSIS
3.1. Results
The first set of data was about the respondents’ perceived language problems of writing scientific
papers for international publications which were collected by the questionnaire. They are presented in
columns of Number (No.) to represent the sequence of the statement, the Statement itself, and the
respondents’ responses of “Yes” or “No” in the forms of percentage (n = 66) as displayed in Table 1.

Statement 1 was meant to measure the possible problem of topic mastery. More than 65% of the
lecturers didn’t find that topic was a problem. Statements of 2 to 5 were meant to investigate the language
problems; statements 2 and 5 were about vocabulary problems, statement 3 was about syntax, and statement
4 was about paragraph writing. Syntax, that is how words are structured and arranged in such a way to make
meanings [25], became the most common problem faced by the lecturers (60.61%). Statements 2 and 5 show
relatively the same (46.97% and 48.48%), and paragraph writing shows the lowest percentage (42.42%).
Statements 6, 7, and 8 were meant to consecutively assess the respondents’ familiarity with parts of scientific
papers of international journals in general, and the problem of making paraphrases and translations.
The second set of data was the language problems in the forms of errors or mistakes found in the
lecturers’ writing tasks. There were 128 phrases, 108 sentences (4 sentences were excluded because of their
unintelligibility), and 42 paragraphs. By applying error analysis suggested by Ellis [26], the errors were
identified and presented in Table 2. Data 1 were taken from the phrases, Data 2 were from the sentences, and
Data 3 were from the paragraphs which were all written by the lecturers.

In general as the table shows, in the area of grammar, errors in singular-plural nouns were the most
frequently made errors. In most cases, the respondents failed to comply the English grammar rule of plural
nouns which are formed by adding “s/es” to their singular forms. They wrote “some finding, 50 research
participant, some previous study, some category, 5 province, many time, etc.. This could be the effect of their

habit in their first language as Bahasa Indonesia does not have inflection for plural. The second most
frequently made errors in the area of grammar is subject-verb agreement. There were 49 cases of
inappropriate subject-verb agreement. They mostly happened when the respondents wrote sentences having
singular subject in simple present, or when the subject was plural but the verb was written in inflection “s”.
Here are some of them: 1) This paper describe about the influence of breastfeeding; 2) The company need to
think about ….; 3) These three basic nature of internet becomes very popular to us; 4) Economic values
means at the moment of ….
The third most commonly made errors were the use of articles of “a/an” or “the”. Many articles
were found missing in the sentences as in the following excerpts 1) Eventhough woman can be __ president,
…; 2) Community of practice clinical instructurer has __ significant effect ..; 3) Some of previous research
has found __ significant relation between …; 4) The paper explain about __ influence of breastfeeding …,
etc.. There were also problems in word class as “ Research instrument was validation by the expert;
Nowadays, cooperation spreadly fast; Recently, the consument access information very easy by internet”. To
be correct, the word “validation” should have been “validate”, “spreadly” should have been ”spread”, and
“easy” should have been “easily”. For tenses, there were a few problems of incorrect tenses for present and
past as in “ … which consist of 36 nursing student who practice in Sultan Agung Islamic Hospital; Today,
cooperatives were developing very fast” which should have been respectively “… which consist of 36
nursing students who practiced in Sultan Agung Islamic Hospital” and “Today, cooperatives are developing
very fast”.
For syntax, respondents had problem in constructing English phrases. There were 53 inappropriate
constructions of phrases. The problems varied but mostly were about noun phrases and verb phrases
formations. Respondents had the problems of sequencing the head and its modifiers. For example, when they
were requested to write in English “beberapa temuan penelitian terdahulu”, many of them wrote “some
finding previous research” or “some finding research previous”. Similarly, they wrote “participant research”
for “partisipan penelitian” instead of “research participant”. Other examples are “the problem research that
interest” for “interesting research problem”, and “repeat topic discussion” for “repeatedly discussed topic”.
For verb phrases, many problems were about the construction of modal + verb, auxiliary + verb, be +
participles, and the like. Here are some excerpts of them 1) This finding research will implication of
development ….; 2)The result of this research will be implicate to the ….; 3) Role model will increased
awareness …; 4) Some of previous research have find significantly relation …. While for sentence writing,
the missing of the verb (predicate) as one of the basic elements of a sentence was common, as found in the
excerpts 1) In studying the materials, teaching materials, in an easy way using their devices connected to the
internet; 2) This important to gets funding through various research schemes, reseach grants, and others
research scheme both domestic and international funding; 3) So very excited to make essay about children as
a victim; 4) From internet or mass media such as television or newspaper not a little news about children as
a victim; 5) Data analysis using descriptive analysis and multiple regression analysis; etc.
For vocabulary, some lecturers had problems in using the right word among the similar words as
found in the excerpt of “affect of breastfeeding” for “the effect of breastfeeding”, “studies model” for
“learning model”, “cooperation” for “cooperatives”, and “consument” for “consumer”. Problems of spelling
were found in the 3 types of data. They were among others 1) the missing of double letters as in “discus” for
“discuss”, “acces” and “acess” for “access”, “employe” for “employee”, and 2) the missing of unvoiced
letters as in “goverment” for “government”, “reseach” for “research”, “instrumen” for “instrument”,
“brestfeeding” for “breastfeeding”, “decreas” for “decrease”, “elemen” for “element”, etc. For word forms,
the errors were mostly because of the use of inappropriate forms of verbs as present participle or gerund,
infinitive, past participle and the like as in the following excerpts 1) celebrate Idul Fitri is special moment so
…; 2) … there are two factors to considered; 3) … collect with use some of category; 4) At least Mudik
Lebaran blending culture, economic, etc.
3.2. Discussion
The quality of an academic or research paper is evaluated based on, mostly, three criteria namely the
quality of the topic, the language, and the format of the paper as prescribed by the journal’s editors, therefore,
lecturers who are willing to publish in journals must be able to satisfy those requirements. This study found
that for majority of the lecturers, topic was not a problem. When they wanted to write they had already got
certain topics to be developed. It is good because In the case of academic writing especially for beginners,
topics very frequently become problems. The studies by Rahmiati [27] and Asauka and Usui [28] found that
topic generation was among the major problems beginner writers were facing in the beginning stages of their
writing process resulted from their insufficient knowledge and experiences. For lecturers, topic may not be a
problem because they have been working in academic institutions where reading papers and journals,
discussing, teaching or even writing topics of their disciplines can be regular activities. However, this study

found that majority of the lecturers had problems with the language as proven by the analysis of the language
tasks collected and their responses on the questionnaire. This finding supports previous studies which suggest
that language is one of the major problems hampering Indonesian lecturers from writing in English [12]. The
elicited data of this study show that there were problems with all of the language aspects being observed from
grammar, syntax, vocabulary, spelling, and word forms. Good content written in poor language will not
likely be able to attract readers, and consequently will be rejected by editors. Therefore, the lecturers must
also learn how to write correctly and accurately.
The first language aspect deserves attention for lecturers trying to write academic papers in English
is the vocabulary. Although, the number of lecturers who could not choose and use appropriate English
vocabulary was only slightly higher than the ones who could, the problem of vocabulary is serious as
vocabulary is the basic communication tool. Without vocabulary, writing activity will stop even though the
writers have a lot of interesting ideas in their minds. Someone who is trying to write English scientific
journal will not be able to do so if his/her acquisition of English vocabulary in general and the specific terms
related to the topic is poor. Poor vocabulary mastery can be the result of poor language input the language
learner acquires [29]. Therefore, in the effort of learning to write scientific journals, it is very recommended
that the lecturers read a lot of English journals. The finding that vocabulary was a problem for many of the
lecturers in writing academic papers of this study was similar to the study of Abdulkareem [30] which
investigated academic writing problems faced by postgraduate students at University Teknologi Malaysia
(UTM) with respondents coming from 8 different countries in Arab world as Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Yemen,
Arab Algeria etc.. The study revealed that vocabulary was the most-mentioned problem they were facing
when writing academic papers in English. Similar to this was the study of Asaoka & Usui in Japan [28]
which found that vocabulary and expression, together with grammar and mechanics were the surface-level
problems in writing for academic purpose. Though the elicited data of the study show that errors in
vocabulary were not many, they did show that there was a problem of vocabulary accuracy. As found in the
excerpts, the use of affect instead of effect or studies instead of learning potentially leads to
misunderstanding.
The second aspect language problem dealt with syntactic issue, namely how words and phrases are
constructed to make them meaningful [25]. In any language, words are not just put in sequences randomly
but they must be arranged in such a way to make them intelligible and successfully convey meanings. The
elicited data show that there were many inaccuracies in syntax in both phrase and sentence levels of writing
and were confirmed by the data of the questionnaire in which more than 60% of the lecturers admitted to
have the problems with syntax. This finding is in line with the study of Yusuf and Jumriana with respondents
of students writing their theses which found that as the beginner writers, the students made a lot of errors and
mistakes in the construction of phrases and sentences [31] and also the study of Azizah & Budiman on
challenges in writing academic papers [23] which found similar result that grammar, in this case includes
syntax, was a problem in writing for international publication.
The third aspect of language which may become problem for non-English lecturers was paragraph
writing and paragraph development. A paragraph is a group of related sentences about a certain topic which
is developed by the writer [32]. Mostly paragraph consists of a topic sentence, supporting details, and, in
some, conclusion. The sentences in paragraph should be organized cohesively so that ideas are tightly
connected. The data show that the number of lecturers who had the problem of paragraph was higher than the
one who did not. Parallel to writing problems of many other English language learners, problems in writing
paragraphs could be paragraph structuring (the relationship between topic sentence and supporting details),
topic development, the failure to use cohesive device appropriately and so on. This finding was also in line
with the finding of Azizah & Budiman in which more than 50% of their respondents found difficulties in
organizing ideas or opinions in paragraphs.
The fourth language problem which was highlighted in the research was the mastery of English
specific terms relevant to the topic written. A term is a verbal expression of a concept belonging to the
conceptual system of a language for specific purpose. The writer’s experience of teaching and providing
consultation in writing for scientific journals or papers by non-English lecturers confirms that terminology is
a problem. Since the translation of English terms into Bahasa Indonesia may use different phrases or words
[33], when an Indonesian writer want to write those Indonesian terms into their original English, they may
have wrong terms. Fachruddin et al. give example of the term “superheated steam” which may be translated
into Bahasa Indonesia as “uap panas lanjut”, “uap kering”, or “uap superpanas”. These terms then could be
translated by Indonesian writers as superheated steam, dry steam, or superhot steam. These may trigger
confusion among readers. It is understandable, therefore, when more than 60% of the lecturers admitted that
they had problems in translating Indonesian phrases into their English counterparts.
Except the language problems, the study also attempted to analyze respondents’ understanding on
the parts of a journal paper with statement “I know the important parts of a scientific paper.” The responses

were 81.82% of the respondents had “Yes” while the rest, 18.18%, had “No”. This strongly suggests that
respondents had been very familiar with elements of a journal paper as well as its organization or structural
pattern. Following Swales [34], the major structural patterns of research articles is Introduction, Method,
Result, and Discussion (IMRD). However, Lin and Evans’ study with 433 empirical research articles
published in 2007 found that, besides IMRD, frequently used pattern in the corpus being studied are
ILM[RD]C and IM[RD]C [35]. ILM[RD] stands for Introduction, Literature Review, Method, Result
and Discussion, and Conclusion, while IM[RD]C stands for Introduction, Method, Result and Discussion,
and Conclusion
When respondents were requested to response on their ability to paraphrase quotations or
information from journals with their own English language, interestingly 65.15% respondents chose “Yes”,
and only 34.85% declined. This suggests that lecturers at university had the skills and ability to paraphrase.
Paraphrasing is a technique of incorporating sources by borrowing the author’s ideas but they are restated in
the writer’s own language. The study by Hayuningrum on students’ problems of writing paraphrases for
academic writing found forgetting to documents, including too much of the original, misreading the original,
leaving important information, adding opinion, expanding or narrowing the meaning, and substituting
inappropriate synonyms as common problems in paraphrasing [36]. Though those research findings were of
students, they may serve as warnings for lecturers in writing phrases.
4. CONCLUSION
Indonesian lecturers are now improving themselves to be able to publish scientific papers in
international journals. However, many of them are facing language problems. Data elicited from the lecturers
show that errors and mistakes occurred in all aspects of language which were observed namely grammar
(word class, subject-verb agreement, tense, singular-plural forms, and articles), syntax (phrase and sentence
structure), vocabulary, spelling as well as word forms. Singular/plural nouns and subject-verb agreements
were the two most frequently made errors, while for syntax, the number of errors in phrases was higher than
the one in sentences. In their writings, lecturers also made errors in vocabulary, spellings, and word forms.
More than 50% of the lecturers found that vocabulary, syntax, paragraph writing, and translating Indonesian
into English were problems for them, while parts of journal articles, topic to write, specific terms related to
topic being written, and paraphrasing were perceived as problems by less than 50% of the respondents. Some
language problems can be the results of the grammar differences between the lecturers’ native language
Bahasa Indonesia and English as singular and plural nouns, subject-verb agreement, the construction of
phrases, but others may be the result of inaccuracies of their writing.
It is recommended, therefore, that in the effort to increase the number of lecturers’ international
publications and improve the quality of them, lecturers should improve their English language mastery.
Writing trainings or writing clinics directed to help them improve their ability in writing papers for
international publication must also sufficiently address the issue of language problems. They should not only
address contents, technicalities and procedures since the issues of writing, particularly writing in a
foreign/second language, are not only about what to write but also about how to write.

Hartono is a lecturer at English Department of Universitas Islam Sultan Agung Semarang
(UNISSULA). His research interests among others are writing in foreign language, teaching
English as a foreign language, and second language acquisition. He published papers in some

Ruseno Arjanggi is a lecturer at Faculty of Psychology of Universitas Islam Sultan Agung
Semarang (UNISSULA). His research interests are educational psychology, learning, and
adjustment. He published papers in some journal and presented papers in some international
conference.
Kurniawan Yudhi Nugroho is currently employed as an academic staff at Universitas Islam
Sultan Agung (UNISSULA) Semarang. His primary duties are to teach and conduct research,
which benefits community. His research interests are mainly in the fields of English Writing,
