Viral genomes can be DNA or RNA, and follow different routes of expression and replication. DNA viruses like adenoviruses and herpes viruses replicate in the nucleus and use host and viral enzymes. Their gene expression occurs in stages. RNA viruses have segmented genomes and encode RNA-dependent RNA polymerases. They replicate and transcribe their genomes in the cytoplasm. Retroviruses like HIV have RNA genomes that are transcribed into DNA which integrates into the host genome.
