WHAT IS LEARNING ?
Learning is a multi-faced phenomenon that can be
understood from three perspectives: experiential,
behavioral, and neurological.
LEARNING STYLES
MAIN LEARNING STYLES:
• VISUAL LEARNERS
• AUDITORY LEARNERS
• KINESTHETIC LEARNERS
OTHER LEARNING STYLES:
• READING/WRITING LEARNERS
• LOGICAL/MATHEMATICAL LEARNERS
• SOCIAL LEARNERS
• SOLITARY LEARNERS
COGNITIVE STYLES
COGNITIVE STYLES ARE LIKE UNIQUE LENSES
THROUGH WHICH PEOPLE SEE AND ENGAGE
WITH THE WORLD. THEY'RE INDIVIDUALIZED
PATTERNS THAT AFFECT HOW WE TAKE IN
INFORMATION, SOLVE PROBLEMS, AND
MAKE DECISIONS.
THE MAJOR DIMENSIONS OF COGNITIVE STYLES:
• THE GLOBAL-HOLISTIC
• FOCUSED-DETAILED PROCESSING
• THE VERSATILE STYLE
LEARNING STRATEGIES
Learning strategies are specific approaches or techniques
individuals apply to improve their learning, retention, and
application of information. These strategies may vary
depending on personal preferences, the nature of the
subject being learned, and the individual's learning style.
TYPES
Active Learning: Engaging actively with the material through discussions, problem-solving, or hands-on activities.
Visualization: Using diagrams, charts, or mind maps to visually organize information.
Chunking: Breaking down large amounts of information into smaller, manageable chunks.
Note-Taking: Organizing information in a way that is easy to review later.
Teaching Others: Enhances understanding and reinforces learned material.
Summarization: Condensing and summarizing information in one's own words.
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN
LEARNING STYLES AND COGNITIVE
STYLES
Learning styles generally align with cognitive styles,
although they are not synonymous. Visual learners may
show a preference for holistic thinking, whereas auditory
learners could lean towards focused-detailed processing.
However, there might be variations, and an individual could
have a visual learning style yet prefer focused-detailed
processing.
HOW LEARNING STRATEGIES CONNECT
Learning strategies are adaptable based on both learning styles and cognitive styles.
Examples:
• Visual learners might benefit from strategies like mind mapping, using diagrams, or visual aids to process
information.
• Holistic thinkers may prefer strategies like concept mapping, summarizing broader themes, or seeking
patterns and connections.
Activity
Choose one or more of the following statements to identify your learning style, cognitive
style, and learning strategy
• When learning something new, do you prefer using diagrams, charts,
or visual aids? (visual learner)
• When learning, do you tend to remember information more easily
when it's presented in audio format? (auditory learner)
• Do you prefer hands-on activities or experiments to understand new
concepts? (kinesthetic learner)
1- Identifying your learning style:
• do you tend to see the bigger picture without focusing on the
specific details? (Global-Holistic Thinkers)
• Do you prefer to delve into specifics and details without grasping
the larger concept? (Focused-Detailed Processing Thinkers)
• Do you find that you can switch between global and detailed
thinking depending on the situation? (Versatile Style)
2- Identifying your cognitive style:
3- Identifying your learning stragies:
• Visualization
• Chunking
• Note-Taking • Teaching Others
• Summarization
If you use other strategies please share them
• Memory cards
