A kindergarten teacher wrote a grant to create a lending library of educational DVDs for her students to borrow and watch at home. The grant was approved, allowing the children to check out DVDs to help them learn letters and sounds while watching television. The DVDs have been popular with the excited children, who sing songs from them and show their engagement and learning. The library has helped many low-income and Spanish-speaking families whose parents cannot always help with homework.

2. A Bright Idea… Learning Letters and Sounds can be a big job for some children. Children LOVE to watch TV! Wouldn’t it be great if you could think of a way for them to learn letters while watching TV?

3. Leap Frog has Awesome DVD’s But I only have one copy of my son’s favorite Leap Frog DVD’s…it will take forever for each child in my class to have a turn watching them! Let me think…

4. AHA!!! I wrote an IRC Literacy Support Grant for a lending library of Educational DVD’s, complete with bags for the children to carry their DVD home! I waited and hoped… THEY SAID YES!!!

5.  Excited Children  The children in our classes LOVE to take these DVD’s home and request turn after turn. They are excited if we watch them in class, paying close attention. The children walk around singing the songs, which means they have tuned in and made connections in their learning process!

6. Thank You, IRC!!! You have touched and helped the children in our district! We serve a diverse population including children from low income, Hispanic, Spanish speaking families. Many times parents are unable to help with Kindergarten Homework! Together we have made a memorable difference to all of these Kindergarten children!
