The thing about startups is that they're in a race. They need to find a way to start bringing in money before they run out of the money they have. This forces them to find ways to operate extremely quickly. They cut all the fat and just focus on what needs to be done. They learn at incredible rates about what will and will not work and use that knowledge to create products that customers will love. As a result, the really good ones are able to beat out larger organizations with many more resources. Imagine if those larger organizations, with so many resources, could operate as lean as a startup? In this presentation, I share techniques that startups are doing today to be lean and talk about how some of these same principles can be applied within companies of any size.

Some consider measurement in agile development destructive—or at the very least useless. Larry Maccherone disagrees and offers eight tools to slay the dragons of agile measurement. The #1 Dragon slayer—Use measurement for feedback rather than as a lever. What's the difference? Feedback is used to improve your own behavior; a lever is employed to change someone else's behavior. The distinction is subtle but critical. If you think what gets measured gets done, you are already venturing into “thar be dragons” territory. But it's not too late. The release night may have made sense at one point, but in an always-on world striving for shorter cycle times, small batch sizes and limiting work in progress, the release night and the big-bang release cutover have become an anti-pattern that stifles innovation & leads to wider outages, not smaller ones. The three steps of Progressive Delivery can be used to safely release during business hours, "limiting the blast radius" (time and scope) of unanticipated issues that surface in production: Decouple deployment from release. Control code exposure (who new code is "released" to) by targeting a list of users, user attributes or randomized but persistent "buckets" Observe who has been exposed to new code and watch for the differences in system health and user behavior for the "on" and "off" groups, rather than watching global metrics to determine "how the release is going."

Often individual updates seem random or arbitrary, or just reverse the fates of the previous update. But is there a general direction over time? What kind of sites have trended upwards, and was it algorithm updates that did that for them? Google likes to say that if you make good sites and content, updates will reward you. But this isn't really true. Clearly, in the optimisation and experimentation of the Google algorithm, good sites cannot only move upwards. Sometimes they will be tested in a higher position than makes sense given their relevance, after which they must come down. In recent times, we've also assumed that changes in rankings result quickly from changes in sites. And yet, SEOs will often say that algorithm updates are rewarding them for long-past changes. Which of these narratives are true? Are they compatible?

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management. The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM). Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”. All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
