What I Learned in My Leadership Class
Before this class, I had a very primitive and vague definition of leadership. Not only did I define it as per my views and ideologies, but I also said
that each individual has their own definition of leadership. My initial belief was that leadership does not have a clear cut definition, but there were
well defined leadership traits which made an individual. I also initially believed that personal traits did not translate into leadership traits with no
strong correlation. After going through the various modules this class offered, it is safe to say that I have significantly redefined leadership and
underwent a strong personal assessment. This paper talks what I took back from each of the class activities, assignments and how my self–assessment
compares to the perception of others. I think this class was a good mix of both theoretical concepts as well as practical applications for discussion.
Something I enjoyed the most and benefited greatly was the application of various leadership models, theories and character comparisons to personal
life applications. Leadership exists in all facets of life and it is important to understand some of the several well researched theories and look for
opportunities to apply them in life. The ropes course was strategically scheduled in the beginning of the class to get to know everyone outside the

Leadership Themes Research indicates that there are a vast number of approaches and theories for assessing effective leadership and behaviors. One
theory that seems to be the most popular by Bass was transformational leadership. This theory and hypothesis involve idealized influence, inspirational

Once I have found my voice, I need to set an example and be a role model to my team. I think it would be beneficial to create an award system that
would allow people in our department to nominate coworkers who have done an amazing job or went out of their way to help our department. People
who earn the award can leave early from work on a day of their choosing. Having an award system that recognizes our staff will reinforce our
department's shared values.
The second practice is to inspire a Shared Vision. A leader should be able to imagine a shared vision for the future. Next, a leader should be able to

Those days have since past. As women are achieving higher levels of education and are being employed in more prominent positions, their leadership
roles in family organizations have increased. Many young women are refusing to accept the rule of "primogeniture" (Nelton, 1999). Primogeniture is
defined as a birthright or an inheritance. Although women are making great strides in this arena, there is still the feeling out there that the son should
be considered first and the daughter as a second option, only if there is no son or if the son declines the offer. But, Nelton says that, "young women by
and large feel that if they want to go into the family business, the opportunity is there." In each of the cases described by Nelton, the fathers
encouraged their daughters to become involved in the family business. As well, each father let his daughter run the show once she was named CEO–the

My favorite definition of leadership relics Sun Tzu in the Art of War: "The way [of leadership] means inducing the people to have the same aim as the
leadership, so that they will share death and share life, without fear of danger" (Sun Tzu, 2005, p.43). The definition recognizes the collaborative
dynamic that leader and follower share– both share the benefits and risks in its pursuit. Moreover, Senge's work presented me to systems thinking and
understanding the unified wholeness of organizations. This view was reinforced by my study of Neurolinguistic Programming and Neuro–Semantics,
understanding human communications and the way in which we learn to construct our mental maps of the area. I saw conscious decisions to be
freeing and challenging at the same time. This commitment was a challenging as I began to explore the process of leadership outside the hierarchical
power structure that could command action by positional authority. Now as an independent contributor I found myself able to lead freely in a variety

Laissez–faire leadership is a hands–off style characterized by leaders who give the least amount of guidance to their subordinates as possible. These
leaders believe that people are at their most creative and efficient when a leader focuses their energy into facilitating an environment where distractions

The way in which I communicate either builds or can harm the relationship between my soldier and I. When an important moment of discussion
arises, I am always prepared to appropriately handle the situation at hand. More than anything else, I believe as a leader it is always important to

Osland, et al. (2007) provide a good introduction to three basic motivational content theories. The first theory is Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs that
proposes man is motivated by a lack in the one or more of the five common needs. The needs that Maslow identifies are physiological, safety, social
belonging, self–esteem, and self–actualization. Maslow believed that one fills needs from the most basic (like food and water) to the highest level
(self–actualization). Maslow's ideas are easy to relate to and attempt to provide an all–inclusive approach to the concept of motivation; however, there
is little evidence to support the idea that man cannot have self–actualization without the other more basic needs first satisfied. The second content
theory Osland, et al. discuss is McCelland's learned needs. McCelland states that man is motivated by one of three things: achievement, power, or
affiliation – or a mixture of the three. Each of these needs can possess a negative or positive connotation or implementation, but it is argued that
people motivated by affiliation make better leaders. The third theory presented is McGregor's Theory X and Theory Y. McGregor asserts that Theory

explain how ethics play a role in leadership and decision making. This week I encountered multiple dilemmas which affected my actions at work,
home, and school; in this paper I will exploit those dilemmas and how they are considered weakness that I incorporated in my IDP. Using last week 's
assignment to start an IDP, I came up with certain actions (part 3) to take to further advance myself as a leader. The reasoning behind these actions will

It is rare that a person can easily find their own faults, because they think that everything they do is right or justified. For the longest time this was
me. As expressed by Urbany, Joel, Reynolds, and Phillips (2008), "Chief among these traps, especially regarding decisions that people later come to
regret, is their failure to evaluate decisions in a comprehensive way that focuses on values trade–offs." I thought I was a great leader, and there was
nothing else that I could learn as a person. It was through the assessments and this week's work reflection, I realized through regret there is so much
work needs to be done. I have to acknowledge my downfalls willingly in order to correct them. I realized that my ambitions strive me to continually
take on tasks. I felt overwhelmed this week because of these ambitions. I understand that my attitude at times can alter a situation because I have people
looking at everything that I do. Even though I tried to hide my true feelings for the best of the organization, my thoughts reflected in my actions. Two
other weaknesses are time–management and organization. These two goes hand in hand and I realized that I suffer tremendously from lack thereof
and have found multiple solutions to help enhance these weaknesses as I expressed in the IDP. I feel these two will be challenging as well because I

Becoming an effective leader is a lot like being in the stock market. You don 't make your fortune in a day; you make it daily, a little bit at a time.
What matters most is what you do day after day, over the long haul. The secret to leadership success is investing in your leadership development, much
like letting your assets compound. The final result is "Leadership Growth" over time.
Leaders aren 't born; their made. The process of leadership is long, complicated and has made elements. Respect, dignity, discipline, people skills,
vision, emotional strength, opportunity, preparedness and experience are just some of the intangible elements which come into play when talking
leadership.
We can, over a period of time, increase our leadership potential if we can understand and accept the five levels of leadership. They are:
Level One – Leadership From Position
This is the basic level of leadership. At this level people follow you because they have to. Your ability to lead people is totally geared to your position
and does not exceed beyond the lines of your job description or the authority granted to you by the company and your boss. Your security with the
company is based on title and position, not talent.
To be an effective leader at this level know your job, be prepared to accept responsibility, exercise authority with caution, assess the strengths and short
comings of your people, do more than what is

Leadership is defined as a process of increased social influence that exploits the efforts of others to accomplish certain goals or vision. It is derived
from social influence, and not power or authority. Leaders motivate, inspire, convince, and coach others towards a certain vision. Leadership dwells on
emotional intelligence that is the ability to manage oneself and one's relationships. Emotional intelligence is achieved through social skill,
self–awareness, self–management, and social–awareness (Daniel, 2004). Leadership is different from management in that it focuses on doing the right
things while management focuses on doing things right (Jeffrey, 2007). Here, the leaders challenge the status quo while a manger defends the status
quo. Leadership must involve a clear, consistent goal. Leadership means inspiring others to follow the goals/vision to the level that it becomes a
collective effort, shared vision/goal and a common success.
Leadership originated from several theories. In this case, the trait theory applies in my reflective journal. Trait theory suggests that people get certain
traits and qualities that suit them for leadership. Another theory that applies to my reflective Journal is the contingency theory. The contingency theory
assumes that leaders evaluate specific variables linked to the environment to determine the specific style of leadership appropriate for the situation. In

  • 3. What I Learned in My Leadership Class Before this class, I had a very primitive and vague definition of leadership. Not only did I define it as per my views and ideologies, but I also said that each individual has their own definition of leadership. My initial belief was that leadership does not have a clear cut definition, but there were well defined leadership traits which made an individual. I also initially believed that personal traits did not translate into leadership traits with no strong correlation. After going through the various modules this class offered, it is safe to say that I have significantly redefined leadership and underwent a strong personal assessment. This paper talks what I took back from each of the class activities, assignments and how my self–assessment compares to the perception of others. I think this class was a good mix of both theoretical concepts as well as practical applications for discussion. Something I enjoyed the most and benefited greatly was the application of various leadership models, theories and character comparisons to personal life applications.
