Blake and Mouton
Leadership Grid Theory
Introduction
• The most commonly known grid approach was developed by Blake
and Mouton and is known by many as simply “THE GRID”. The two
dimensions used by Blake and Mouton were “Concern for
Production” and “Concern for People
• Leaders that are very task-oriented simply want to get things
done
• Leaders that are very people oriented consider the needs of team
members
LEADERSHIP GRID
• The Impoverished (1,1) -(Low Production / Low People)
• Country Club Style (1,9) (High people/ Low People)
• Produce, Dictatorial or Perish Style (9,1)-(HighProduction / Low
People)
• The Middle-of-the-road (5,5)-( Medium Production / Medium People)
• Team Management – (High Production/High People)
• Blake and Mouton's grid theory and suggested that 'Team Style'
behaviour was very reasonable in an 'ideal world'.
Team Management
• Team management is a term referring to a variety of activities which bring a team
together to carry them out. This means completing projects or running day-to-
day tasks.
• This style emphasizes making employees feel part of the company-family, and
involving them in understanding organizational purpose and determining
production needs.
Advantages of Team Management
• Effective team building
• Productivity booster
• Promotes learning
• Employee satisfaction
Disadvantages of team management
• Analysis paralysis
• Watered down solutions
• Teams that are too agreeable
• Social loafing
Conclusion
• The model basically neglects the significance of the internal and
external constraints, context, circumstances and situation.
