The document provides commentary and discussion on Old Testament passages from Deuteronomy and 2 Samuel. It discusses the importance of remembering God's commandments and not forgetting Him. It encourages filling one's home with reminders of gospel principles through artwork, books, and music. Failing to do so could lead to spiritual consequences like perishing from sin.
2. 52 Week Challenge Through The Old Testament - Week 19
2 Samuel 3 to 2 Samuel 19
• Flagon of wine (2 Samuel 6:19) the footnote says “perhaps a raisin-
cake”. The uncertainty comes from Flagon being used elsewhere as a
“Large, two handled jar for storing wine (see Isiah 22:24)... The Hebrew
term ashishah translated as ‘flagon’ refers to a cake of raisins, often
used as offering to idols” (Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary).
• When David confessed his sins to Nathan, he responded by saying “The
Lord also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die” (2 Samuel 12:13).
The footnote explains that David was not punished immediately by
death; but he did not escape punishment. See also Joseph Smith

4. • Even though this chapter is not in our reading assignment,
let’s just dip into it.
• Moses teaches again about the commandments and the
need to keep them.
• Read verses 9; 23-24.
• God will not tolerate idolatry, he will destroy the Israelites.
• Read verses 29-31.
• In our tribulation and trials, are we turning to the Lord as he
is honouring his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob?
Deuteronomy 4
5. George Albert Smith
“It was a long time ago that the Lord gave to Moses the Ten
Commandments. If the people of the world had observed the
Ten Commandments from that time until now, we would have
a different world. There would be millions of people who
would live longer than they have lived and be happier. The
Ten Commandments are in force today, and if we are good
Latter-day Saints and are observing what the Lord has
advised, we will honor the Sabbath day ... Most of the
nations are losing their liberties they have had because they
have not kept the commandments of the Lord.”
6. The Jewish Shema - Deuteronomy 6:4-5
• The Jewish “shema”, which means hear, is the
most important statement of Jewish faith found in
scripture.
• Read Deuteronomy 6:4-5.
• The Jews repeat it on special occasions and at the
moment of their death.
• Take a few minutes to find a scripture that is a
statement of your faith.

8. The repetitive warning
Deuteronomy 6:6-9 Deuteronomy 11:18-21
Put these words in your heart.
Teach them diligently to your children
and talk of them when sitting in your
house, moving and sleeping/rising.
Bind them for a sign unto thine hand,
they shall be as frontlets.
Write them upon the posts of thy
house.
Lay up these words in your heart and
soul, bind them for a sign.
Teach them your children, speaking of
them when sitting in your house,
moving, leaving/entering etc.
Write them upon the door posts.
That your days may be multiplied, the
days if your children may be as the
days of heaven upon the earth.
9. “Write upon the posts of thy house”
• List the paintings, posters, musical
recordings, and other objects in your home.
• Label each item with either a “+” (indicating
that the object is likely to lead you to
remember the Lord) or a “–” (indicating that it
is more likely to lead your heart away from
the Lord).
10. President Ezra Taft Benson
People who are “captained by Christ will
be consumed in Christ. ... Enter their
homes, and the pictures on their walls,
the books on their shelves, the music in
the air, their words and acts reveal them
as Christians.”
11. • What does it mean to forget the Lord?
• Read Deuteronomy 8:11.
• What are the consequences of forgetting
him?
• Read Deuteronomy 8:19.
• Is “perishing” a physical reality or a spiritual
consequence to the sin around us in our day?
Deuteronomy 8
12. Brigham Young
“The worst fear that I have about [members of this
church] is that they will get rich in this country, forget
God and His people, wax fat, and kick themselves out
of the church and go to hell. This people will stand
mobbing, robbing, poverty, and all manner of
persecution, and be true. But my greater fear for them
is that they cannot stand wealth; and yet they have to
be tried with riches, for they will become the richest
people on this earth.”
13. Time to Ponder…..
Q. How can we get the words of the
scriptures into our hearts?
Q. What can you change in your home to
better remind you of the Lord, his words,
and your covenants with him?
Q. How can we be sure that we do not
forget God?
16. Closing thoughts...
The Jewish people live their faith to the letter of
the law. Are we doing the same? Are we focusing
so much on the contents of the eyelets or the
mezuzots that we are forgetting to live our lives or
see our blessings.
Is our home built around our faith and belief for all
to see, or do we build a worldly life, relegating the
gospel to an unimportant status within our
homes?
Sister Mary R. Durham said:
“Immersing our families in the Spirit will keep
our children’s hearts open to His influence.”
