Repeated In The NT
• You know the commandments, "DO NOT COMMIT
ADULTERY, DO NOT MURDER, DO NOT STEAL, DO NOT BEAR
FALSE WITNESS, HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER." —
Luke 18:20 [Mark 10:19]
• For this, "YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, YOU SHALL
NOT MURDER, YOU SHALL NOT STEAL, YOU SHALL NOT
COVET," and if there is any other commandment, it is
summed up in this saying, "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR
NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF." —Romans 13:9 (Matthew, 4:10,
5:21, 28, 28:1, 1 Timothy 1:9, James 2:7, 1 Corinthians 8:4 ,
1 John 5:21)
• The only commandment not repeated was to "Remember
the Sabbath day, to keep it holy." (Exodus 20:8). The early
Christians met on the first day of the week.

Nine Of The Ten Commandments Are
Repeated In The NT
• On the first day of the week, when we were gathered
together to break bread, Paul began talking to them,
intending to leave the next day, and he prolonged his
message until midnight. —Acts 20:7 (Mark 16:2, 9; Luke
24:1; John 20:1, 19;1 Corinthians 16:2, Matthew 28:1)
• We and the early Christians met on the first day of the
week because: Sunday was the day of the Lord's
resurrection. The six post-resurrection appearances were
on Sunday. The Holy Spirit came on Sunday. We have been
freed from the Law!
• Colossians 2:16 Therefore no one is to act as your judge in
regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new
moon or a Sabbath day-- 17 things which are a mere shadow
of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ.

“And individual family’s household idols were
considered highly important in Nuzi and were handed
down to the principal heir. If the inheritance were
disputed in court, possession of the family idols could
be accepted as proof that the deceased had intended
the possessor to be his heir. Thus, Rachel’s theft of the
family idols could have been construed as a serious
crime, and attempt to secure Laban's wealth for her
husband and possible future children (Genesis 31:22 –

• When confronting any difficult passage you must
consider the context. Look at the whole thought,
paragraph, chapter, book genre, and then consider it in
light of the whole Bible.
• We use a “normal, historical, literal, grammatical,
contextual” hermeneutic. This passage is about idolatry,
and idolatry has consequences upon children. Just like
most sin. Idolatrous parents will produce children,
grandchildren, and most likely great grand children who
are idolatrous.
Consequence Of Not Punishment
• There are consequences of sin that last a long
time and affect many more people than the
sinner himself.

Exodus 20:6, “generational curses”

• Therefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things
passed away; behold, new things have come. —2 Corinthians 5:17
• In Exodus 20:6, “God is saying that the effects of disobedience (in
this case, worshiping idols) last for a time but the effects of trusting
His Messiah's substitutionary death on the cross are far more
extensive—to a "thousand" generations. Therefore the "effect" of
sin can be broken by faith in God….Some people confuse
"generational curses" with consequences of sin. For example, if a
homosexual repents and trusts God, there may still be
consequences of their prior activity that will affect them and/or
their family in this life. Or if a woman abuses drugs while she is
pregnant, even if she realizes her behavior was wrong and repents,
there may be physical consequences to her and/or the baby. But
that is not the context of what is being taught in Exodus 20.

THE UNIVERSAL SEVEN DAY WEEK
Exodus 20:11, TODAY'S CREATION MOMENT
• Exodus 20:11 "For [in] six days the LORD made heaven and earth,
the sea, and all that in them [is], and rested the seventh day:
wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it."
• According to the Bible, God completed creation in six days and
rested on the seventh, thus setting the pattern for humans to
follow. If the Bible's account of creation is just a myth, or if the days
of Genesis 1 are figurative, why is the very fabric of human
existence tied to the seven day week?
• The Hebrew word shabah means "seven." It comes from the root
word which means full or complete. Not only is this word the
source of the word "Sabbath," it is also related to the word "seven"
in several languages, including English. Even
THE UNIVERSAL SEVEN DAY WEEK
Exodus 20:11, TODAY'S CREATION MOMENT
• the Chinese from ancient times have used the seven day week. The
seventh day of the first lunar month is still known among the
Chinese as the "birthday of mankind." In ancient India, Egypt, Rome
and Greece, the seven day week was standard. Exceptions are few
and far between.
• Science has also learned that one of our most basic biological cycles
is tied to the seven day week. Researchers found measurable
impairments in subjects who were denied one out of seven days for
rest. They also found that no amount of experimental coaxing could
change this built in seven day cycle to six or eight days.
• Evolutionary researchers admit that they do not know when the
seven day week started. But the origin of the seven day week is
clearly presented in Scripture. The seven day week shows that the
days in Genesis 1 are not make believe, nor are they figurative –
they are the revealed truth of God!

• “Through the prophet Malachi, God used the analogy of father to son
and master to servant to rhetorically ask, "Since you honor your
parents, shouldn't you also honor me?" The Israelites well understood
his meaning. The fifth of the Ten Commandments states that children
are to honor their parents…It was even known that disobedient
children were to be stoned to death…Deuteronomy 21:18-21 The
problem at that time was that the Jewish priests were allowing lame
and sick animals to be sacrificed. This was against God's written
command to sacrifice only animals that were "without blemish."Now
this is what you shall do to them to consecrate them to minister as
priests to Me: take one young bull and two rams without blemish —
Exodus 29:1 (See also Ezekiel 43:22.) Israel had failed to honor God as
the priests had been allowing this lack of respect. Applying this to
today, God might say, "You fear/respect man-made authorities, why
not Me?”

Lord, Compass GML says,
• Hebrews 13:5 . . . being content with what you have . . .
• The charge to be content is actually one of the Ten
Commandments. It ranks right up there with false gods, murder and
adultery (Exodus 20:17). There are too many Christians who believe
that they could serve the Lord far better if they won the lottery.
They think that if they just had another one of "these" or a little
more of "that" they could be far more effective for the Kingdom of
God. But this is thinking from hell. God has given you EVERYTHING
He wants you to have at this very moment. Do you think for a
moment that God couldn't change your circumstances in a
heartbeat if He wanted to?
• God offers you a wonderful life right in the situation you are
currently in. He offers you an abundant life if you FOLLOW Him
(1 Samuel 15:22, Jeremiah 44:23), not if you have great wealth, or

fewer) children…. Be thankful for what you have and don't complain
about what you don't have.

"Betzelem - In His Own Image", Dr. Eli
Eli.Lizorkin@eteachergroup.com
• At the beginning of the Bible we are told that human beings are an
honored part of God’s creation. In fact, we are told that God created
man in His Own Image! The Hebrew word for image is “tzelem” which
is derived from a shorter Hebrew word, “tzel”, meaning “shadow.” Do
you see the connection? When the beams of light fall upon anything, a
shadow (tzel) appears next to it. According to the Bible, a human being
is nothing less than the image (tzelem) of God because in many ways
he/she wondrously reflects/shadows God’s perfection and beauty.
Another intriguing way in which we can see this connection is
reflected in name “Bezalel.” Literally, Bezalel (Betzalel) means “in the
shadow of God”. You recall that he was the person appointed by God
to create the Tabernacle and all its furnishings (Ex.31). The Tabernacle
and everything inside it allowed the Ancient Israelites to approach God
in worship.
According to the Bible, when a human being worships the God of
Heaven and Earth it is as if he or she steps into the very shadow of
God, becoming part of it, reflecting God’s perfection and beauty.

QUESTION FOR THE DAY
Parents

•
• Dear Compass,
• We have three children ages 16, 18 and 20. One is in college and the other
two are a sophomore and senior in high school. It is so easy to give up on
them because of their attitudes. Especially the senior. Most of what we
read says that they are going through that time of "detaching" and that we
should leave them alone. But that's hard, especially when they give us
snippy answers to simple questions.
• We seem to always be walking on eggshells just to avoid making waves but there are waves anyway. We feel that they are basically great kids involved in youth group and go to church. But somewhere we have failed,
and this is a situation that constantly gets us down as parents. Of course,
we have prayed about this. Please help!!

QUESTION FOR THE DAY
Dear Compass,
I have a question regarding "generational curses." I would like to know what you
think about this issue. Do you think we need to be blaming generational curses for
the things that happen to us, certain behavior in our family, etc.?

•

•
•

•

ANSWER:
Most teaching regarding "generational curses" is based on the following scripture:
You shall not worship [other gods] or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a
jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and
fourth generations of those who hate me, —Exodus 20:5To teach that this verse
explains why some "Christians" act the way they do is wrong. First, you must
consider the whole thought, which becomes obvious in the very next verse:
but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My
commandments. —Exodus 20:6God is saying that the effects of disobedience (in
this case, worshiping idols) last for a time but the effects of trusting His Messiah's
substitutionary death on the cross are far more extensive—to a "thousand"
generations. Therefore the "effect" of sin can be broken by faith in God.

Should Israel Return the Tablets of the Law to Egypt?
By Hershel Shanks
• “In 1969, barely two years after the 1967 Six-Day War, a team of
Israeli archaeologists made an exploratory excavation at the base of
one of the numerous sites in the Sinai Peninsula proposed as
Biblical Mt. Sinai. It was not long before a member of the team
exposed a piece of rock with a single Hebrew letter on it. This
naturally led to more intensive excavation in this area, as a result of
which additional, larger pieces of inscribed stones were recovered.
They were taken to Israel for further study.
• When examined by paleographers, experts in dating inscriptions by
the shape and form of the letters, they were in agreement that this
inscription dated to about 1200 B.C.E.
• Gradually, the pieces of stone were fitted together. In the end, a
few pieces from the end and on the side were missing, but

• but they did not appear to have contained letters. What could be
read was clear. Word for word, the inscription was identical to the
text of the Ten Commandments. This text appears in the Bible
twice, once in Exodus 20 and again in Deuteronomy 5. There are
some differences, but the most important is in the Fourth
Commandment’s reasons for the observance of the Sabbath.
Surprisingly, the text on the reconstructed stone tablets from Sinai
follows Deuteronomy more closely than Exodus.
• It was difficult for the scholars to resist the obvious conclusion:
These were the original Tablets of the Law that Moses destroyed
when he came down from the mountain and found the Israelites
worshiping the Golden Calf. The scholars agreed that, all things
considered, it was best to keep the discovery secret, at least for the
time being. The tablets as reconstructed were placed in the
university vault and forgotten…”

I like cartoons. Dennis the Menace has been a favorite for a long time. One comic strip has a picture of Dennis looking at a catalog and saying, "This catalog's got a lot of toys I didn't even
know I wanted."

The Wizard of Id has a comic strip where one monk is putting up a sign on the bulletin board in front of his church while a visiting monk watches. The sign read, "Thou shalt not covet."
The visiting monk said, "Boy, I wish we had a signboard like that at our church."

We come to an end of our study of the 10 commandments. I hope it has been interesting and informative for you. It has for me. The last of the 10 would seem to be the least threatening,
the less dangerous or destructive. Simply stated it says, "You shall not covet." Many of you may think, "That one doesn't bother me." Or, "Even if I covet what's the big deal? Who's hurt
by it?"
Well, the Bible clearly says it is wrong to covet. One good definition that I heard for coveting is: "The uncontrolled desire to acquire." We're not talking about an ordinary desire to have
things. Material possessions by themselves are neutral. The bigger issue today is how we can be content without desiring things uncontrollably.
Let's read the verse. God gives us three categories here. It is wrong to desire: (1) Your neighbor's property (house), Ahab took Nabob's vineyard (2) Your neighbor's people (wife, male or
female servant), King David (3) Your neighbor's possessions (ox, donkey, nor anything). Somebody desired my chain saw so they took it from my garage.
We will look at two kinds of hearts today. The Coveting heart and the Contented heart.
THE COVETING HEART
The coveting heart is not innocent. In God's eyes, it is corrupt and it is corrosive.
A. Corrupt
1. It Disregards the Laws of God
That it is corrupt is obvious because God would not have included it in the list of The Ten Big Ones. Just because it is last doesn't mean it is least. I think it has an effect on all the other ten.
For instance:
(1) How many of you have put money and possessions ahead of God? - V.3
(2) How many have bowed at the altars of materialism and greed while refusing to bow at the altar of the Lord? - Vs. 4-6
(3) Many have blasphemed the name of the Lord in efforts to acquire things. Disregarding God's Word to obtain what you want in life is blaspheming. - V. 7
(4) Have you ever desecrated the Lord's day to make money? - Vs.9-11
(5) Many parents are treated poorly and cast aside by children too busy making money to be bothered with them. - V.12
(6) Many people are dead today because somebody wanted something that belonged to them. - V.13
(7) Lot's of marriages are torn apart because of as one preacher said, "He was so caught up in earning his salt, he neglected his sugar!" A coveting heart is behind adultery. Coveting and
lust are first cousins. - V.14
(8) It goes without saying that stealing is the end result of a covetous spirit that has gone too far. - V.15
(9) Often, people will lie about another person, gossip about them because they are envious and covetous of that person's life. - V.16
Listen to Paul:
Romans 7:7-8
7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had
said, "You shall not covet." 8 But sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, produced in me all manner of evil desire. For apart from the law sin was dead. NKJV
2. It Denies the Lordship of Christ
Philippians 4:19
19 And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. NKJV

The Ten Commandments appear under the headline “Thus Saith the Lord.”
The effort was launched by Joseph Farah, founder and CEO of WND.com and WND Books, to place the Ten Commandments in front of more American eyes than ever before.
The message has been under attack from “civil rights” organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union for years, which removed them from schools, public buildings and even

Farah said they’re still needed across America.
“The purpose is to remind the public of the moral law to which all people are accountable whether they like it or not – even the ACLU,” Farah said. “America needs a set of social common
denominators if we are to remain a self-governing society. No such document has ever been produced by the hand of man. For 3,000 years, empires have come and gone based on their
adherence to the Ten Commandments. Millions of people have perished or been brought to salvation by God’s teachings about right and wrong. That’s what this campaign is all about –

Display of commandments is not as common in American society as it once was. There even was a time when Ted Turner was the cable news king and flatly declared that the Ten
Commandments were outdated.
“I bet nobody here even pays much attention to ‘em, because they are too old,” he told members of the National Newspaper Association.
“Today the commandments wouldn’t go over. Nobody around likes to be commanded. Commandments are out,” said Turner, who also called Christianity a “religion for losers.”
Turner offered, instead of God’s laws, his own rules, called “The Ten Voluntary Initiatives.”
He later apologized.
Farah also pointed to a recent failure by the ACLU to remove the Ten Commandments from a courthouse in Dixie County, Fla.
Senior U.S. District Judge Maurice M. Paul dismissed the case when an anonymous North Carolina man who complained about the message didn’t move to the county.
Liberty Counsel attorney Harry Mihet said, “We went from an order that ‘the monument goes and you have to pay $130,000 to the ACLU’ to ‘the monument stays, and the ACLU has to
pay a total of $3,600.’”
The five-foot-tall 12,000-pound monument was erected at the top of the courthouse steps in 2006 after Joe Anderson Jr., chairman and founder of Lake City-based road builder Anderson
Columbia, purchased it for $20,000. He has not only funded several other Ten Commandments monuments in Florida but also a “revival” mobile display. It’s parked somewhere until legal

First Person: Should Israel Return the Tablets of the Law to Egypt?
By Hershel Shanks
In 1969, barely two years after the 1967 Six-Day War, a team of Israeli archaeologists made an exploratory excavation at the base of one of the numerous sites in the Sinai Peninsula
proposed as Biblical Mt. Sinai. It was not long before a member of the team exposed a piece of rock with a single Hebrew letter on it. This naturally led to more intensive excavation in
this area, as a result of which additional, larger pieces of inscribed stones were recovered. They were taken to Israel for further study.
When examined by paleographers, experts in dating inscriptions by the shape and form of the letters, they were in agreement that this inscription dated to about 1200 B.C.E.
Gradually, the pieces of stone were fitted together. In the end, a few pieces from the end and on the side were missing, but they did not appear to have contained letters. What could be
read was clear. Word for word, the inscription was identical to the text of the Ten Commandments. This text appears in the Bible twice, once in Exodus 20 and again in Deuteronomy 5.
There are some differences, but the most important is in the Fourth Commandment’s reasons for the observance of the Sabbath. Surprisingly, the text on the reconstructed stone tablets
from Sinai follows Deuteronomy more closely than Exodus.
It was difficult for the scholars to resist the obvious conclusion: These were the original Tablets of the Law that Moses destroyed when he came down from the mountain and found the
Israelites worshiping the Golden Calf. The scholars agreed that, all things considered, it was best to keep the discovery secret, at least for the time being. The tablets as reconstructed
were placed in the university vault and forgotten.
Since the Arab Spring and the revolution in Egypt, the new Egyptian government has learned of this archaeological discovery and made a formal demand for the return to Egypt of the
two Tablets of the Law, claiming that they were recovered in territory under the sovereignty of Egypt. There can be no doubt is where they were found. Is Israel obligated to return them
under international law if found in an excavation in the Sinai?
In law school this is called a hypothetical; that is, a hypothetical case that tests the application of a legal rule. In this instance: Would Israel be obligated to turn over to Egypt the original
Tablets of the Law if they had been discovered in Sinai?
The rule generally recognized (like many rules of international law, it has not been formally “enacted” or enunciated in haec verba) is that archaeological objects, especially recently
recovered objects, belong to the nation with sovereignty over the place where the object was found unless it was removed legally.
Often this makes sense. Sometimes, it doesn’t.a This hypothetical case would surely be one of them.
While the nation where the object was found certainly has some claim to the object, so does the culture that produced it.
This is especially so where a modern nation has no cultural connection to the culture/nation that ruled the area when the object was created. In this case, modern Egypt occupies largely
the same space occupied by ancient Egypt, but it has no cultural relationship to ancient Egypt. Egyptians don’t speak the same language (ancient Egyptians spoke Egyptian; most modern
Egyptians speak Arabic), they don’t use the same writing system (hieroglyphic vs. the Arabic alphabet), don’t worship the same gods, don’t revere the same texts, and there is no
resonance of ancient Egyptian culture in modern Egyptian culture. The opposite, of course, is true of Israel.
If the outcome of this case is not clear, at least it should be discussed. As far as I can tell, it is not. The only cases that are discussed involve demands by Egypt, Greece, Italy, Turkey and
perhaps a few other countries for the return of objects from Western, mostly American, museums and universities.
The “culture” element may well come up in contexts other than our hypothetical. The caves near Qumran where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found lie just within the West Bank. The
Palestinians claim the scrolls as part of their heritage. (So does Jordan, which claimed this area when the scrolls were found.) Indeed, much of Israel today occupies ancient Philistia,
rather than ancient Israel. Much of Biblical Israel lies in the West Bank.
Other questions involve not what Israel has that others could claim but what Israel could claim from others. For instance, the Gezer Calendar, which is a contender for the oldest Hebrew
inscription,b was found in the early 20th century at Tel Gezer, a site that lies about halfway between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. This treasure can be seen only in the Istanbul Archaeological
Museum. The famous Siloam Inscription found in Hezekiah’s tunnel in Jerusalem was also discovered under Ottoman control and taken to Constantinople; it, too, now resides in the
Istanbul Archaeological Museum.
Long ago, I pleaded with the Turkish government to return the Siloam Inscription to Jerusalem.c I did not even get a response. The inscription’s importance to Turkey is reflected in the
fact that at that time the inscription was not displayed in a public gallery. Later, I urged the Turkish embassy to consider a short-term loan in connection with the observance of
Jerusalem’s 3,000th anniversary in 1996. Same response—no response.
Ironically enough, as I write, the Turkish government has refused to lend objects to the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London unless they
return disputed artifacts. Adding irony to irony, some of the objects Turkey refused to lend the Met were excavated in Saudi Arabia and were taken to Turkey in Ottoman times.1
I confess it is hard to imagine Israel’s giving up the Dead Sea Scrolls. On the other hand, it is hard to imagine the Jordanians giving up one of the most important and intriguing of the Dead
Sea Scrolls, which is exhibited in the Amman archaeological museum—the Copper Scroll, which probably records the location of hidden treasures from the Jerusalem Temple.
There are no easy answers to these questions.

Timothy 3:2 Jeremiah 35:18-19 Ephesians 6:1-3
Exodus 20:12, Honor Father And Mother
•

Question: "What does it mean to honor my father and mother?"
Answer: Honoring your father and mother is being respectful in word and action and having an inward attitude of esteem for their position. The Greek word for honor means “to revere,
prize, and value.” Honor is giving respect not only for merit but also for rank. For example, some Americans may disagree with the President’s decisions, but they should still respect his
position as leader of their country. Similarly, children of all ages should honor their parents, regardless of whether or not their parents “deserve” honor.

God exhorts us to honor father and mother. He values honoring parents enough to include it in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:12) and again in the New Testament: “Children, obey
your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother which is the first commandment with a promise, so that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the
earth” (Ephesians 6:1-3). Honoring parents is the only command in Scripture that promises long life as a reward. Those who honor their parents are blessed (Jeremiah 35:18-19). In
contrast, those with a “depraved mind” and those who exhibit ungodliness in the last days are characterized by disobedience to parents (Romans 1:30; 2 Timothy 3:2).
Solomon, the wisest man, urged children to respect their parents (Proverbs 1:8; 13:1; 30:17). Although we may no longer be directly under their authority, we cannot outgrow God’s
command to honor our parents. Even Jesus, God the Son, submitted Himself to both His earthly parents (Luke 2:51) and His heavenly Father (Matthew 26:39). Following Christ’s example,
we should treat our parents the way we would reverentially approach our heavenly Father (Hebrews 12:9; Malachi 1:6).
Obviously, we are commanded to honor our parents, but how? Honor them with both actions and attitudes (Mark 7:6). Honor their unspoken as well as spoken wishes. “A wise son heeds
his father's instruction, but a mocker does not listen to rebuke” (Proverbs 13:1). In Matthew 15:3-9, Jesus reminded the Pharisees of the command of God to honor their father and
mother. They were obeying the letter of the law, but they had added their own traditions that essentially overruled it. While they honored their parents in word, their actions proved
their real motive. Honor is more than lip service. The word “honor” in this passage is a verb and, as such, demands a right action.
We should seek to honor our parents in much the same way that we strive to bring glory to God—in our thoughts, words, and actions. For a young child, obeying parents goes hand in
hand with honoring them. That includes listening, heeding, and submitting to their authority. After children mature, the obedience that they learned as children will serve them well in
honoring other authorities such as government, police, and employers.
While we are required to honor parents, that doesn’t include imitating ungodly ones (Ezekiel 20:18-19). If a parent ever instructs a child to do something that clearly contradicts God’s
commands, that child must obey God rather than his/her parents (Acts 5:29).
Honor begets honor. God will not honor those who will not obey His command to honor their parents. If we desire to please God and be blessed, we should honor our parents. Honoring
is not easy, is not always fun, and certainly is not possible in our own strength. But honor is a certain path to our purpose in life—glorifying God. “Children, obey your parents in
everything, for this pleases the Lord” (Colossians 3:20).

Q&A

•

Question: My father abused my siblings and me...for years. Recently, he demanded that we come to his house to receive an early part of our inheritance. We would no longer be
considered his children if we did not show up and obey his decree. His "gift" had some specific conditions that I believed were wrong. Due to these conditions, I and several other
siblings could not "obey" and declined or returned the money. This made him furious. How do I honor this man...who has shown no evidence of repentance at all...and when I am no
longer his child, by his own vow? How do I address him as "father" or "dad" ever again?

•

•

•

Response: Paul wrote, "Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be well with
thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth" (Eph 6:1-3).
So, first, children are to "obey" their parents "in the Lord." We may not always have godly parents, and some of their commands may contradict the revealed will of the Lord. Paul writes
in Romans 13:1, "Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God." Our first obligation is to obey the Lord,
regardless of our age.
Second, we are told to "honor thy father and mother...." Some may think that to "honor" our father or mother means to obey every demand they may make. This isn't true. Again, our
first priority is the express will of God, and when our earthly parents stand in opposition to this, we certainly cannot disobey the Lord.
There is a difference between a child in submission to their parents and adults who no longer live with their parents. "Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall
cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh" (Gn 2:24). In our view, adult children are accountable first to the Lord and are no longer under the direct authority of their parents.
What does it mean to "honor" someone? In 1 Peter 2:17 we are told, "Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king." Certainly "honoring" all men doesn't include
agreeing to or obeying every demand they may make. It does mean, however, to be respectful: "Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye
are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing" (1 Pt 3:9).

•

What should be our response before authorities? When Paul was before the "chief priests," the High Priest commanded one of his aides to strike him (Acts 23:2). Paul replied, "God shall
smite thee, thou whited wall..." (Acts 23:3).

•

Regardless of the unjustness of his "trial," when the authority of the high priest was pointed out (v. 4), Paul's reply (v. 5) was, "I wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is
written, Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people." Paul "reviled not again" (1 Pt 2:23).

•

When Daniel's three friends appeared before Nebuchadnezzar, they answered firmly, but without railing, "If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery
furnace, and he will deliver us....But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up" (Dn 3:17-18). God did
intervene and the king "promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, in the province of Babylon" (v. 30).

•

You ask how you can "address him as 'father' or 'dad' ever again." Shouldn't the question be "how do I respond according to the Scriptures?"

•

Despite what your father has said or done, he remains your father. Neither you nor he can change that fact. If his "decree," however, means there will be no further contact with him,
that rests with the Lord. Who knows how the Lord may intervene as He did for Daniel's three friends? Your godly conduct may be used of the Lord to convict, bring repentance, and
change the heart of your father. And of course, you should never cease to pray for him.

We have been freed from the Law! • Colossians 2:16 Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day-- 17 things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ.

  • 18. Ex 20:3+23, “gods” Are Important • The discoveries at Nuzi and Mari, in Iraq. Shed light of this “gods” issue. • “Nuzi” page 52, in the Archeological Study Bible says, “And individual family’s household idols were considered highly important in Nuzi and were handed down to the principal heir. If the inheritance were disputed in court, possession of the family idols could be accepted as proof that the deceased had intended the possessor to be his heir. Thus, Rachel’s theft of the family idols could have been construed as a serious crime, and attempt to secure Laban's wealth for her husband and possible future children (Genesis 31:22 – 37).”
  • 19. Ex 20:3+23, “gods” Are Important • 1 Kings 18:19-40,… 19 …gather to me all Israel at Mount Carmel, together with 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of the Asherah…20 So Ahab sent a message among all the sons of Israel, and brought the prophets together at Mount Carmel…. • 39 And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, "The LORD, He is God; the LORD, He is God." 40 Then Elijah said to them, "Seize the prophets of Baal; do not let one of them escape." So they seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there. • Rom 6:23
  • 20. Exodus 20:5, Does God Punish The Children For Their Father’s Sins • Exodus 20:5 "You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, • When confronting any difficult passage you must consider the context. Look at the whole thought, paragraph, chapter, book genre, and then consider it in light of the whole Bible. • We use a “normal, historical, literal, grammatical, contextual” hermeneutic. This passage is about idolatry, and idolatry has consequences upon children. Just like most sin. Idolatrous parents will produce children, grandchildren, and most likely great grand children who are idolatrous.
  • 21. Consequence Of Not Punishment • There are consequences of sin that last a long time and affect many more people than the sinner himself. • Exodus 20:6 but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. • Notice that the consequences of obedience last eternally
  • 22. Exodus 20:4-6, Sour Grapes? • Jeremiah 31:29 "In those days they will not say again, 'The fathers have eaten sour grapes, And the children's teeth are set on edge.‘ 30 "But everyone will die for his own iniquity; each man who eats the sour grapes, his teeth will be set on edge. • Ezekiel 18:2-28, ….4"Behold, all souls are Mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is Mine. The soul who sins will die…. • For he who does wrong will receive the consequences of the wrong that he has done, and that without partiality. —Colossians 3:25
  • 23. Exodus 20:6, “generational curses” www.compass.org • Therefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. —2 Corinthians 5:17 • In Exodus 20:6, “God is saying that the effects of disobedience (in this case, worshiping idols) last for a time but the effects of trusting His Messiah's substitutionary death on the cross are far more extensive—to a "thousand" generations. Therefore the "effect" of sin can be broken by faith in God….Some people confuse "generational curses" with consequences of sin. For example, if a homosexual repents and trusts God, there may still be consequences of their prior activity that will affect them and/or their family in this life. Or if a woman abuses drugs while she is pregnant, even if she realizes her behavior was wrong and repents, there may be physical consequences to her and/or the baby. But that is not the context of what is being taught in Exodus 20. • QUESTION FOR THE DAY, Compass International, www.compass.org
  • 24. THE UNIVERSAL SEVEN DAY WEEK Exodus 20:11, TODAY'S CREATION MOMENT • Exodus 20:11 "For [in] six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them [is], and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it." • According to the Bible, God completed creation in six days and rested on the seventh, thus setting the pattern for humans to follow. If the Bible's account of creation is just a myth, or if the days of Genesis 1 are figurative, why is the very fabric of human existence tied to the seven day week? • The Hebrew word shabah means "seven." It comes from the root word which means full or complete. Not only is this word the source of the word "Sabbath," it is also related to the word "seven" in several languages, including English. Even
  • 25. THE UNIVERSAL SEVEN DAY WEEK Exodus 20:11, TODAY'S CREATION MOMENT • the Chinese from ancient times have used the seven day week. The seventh day of the first lunar month is still known among the Chinese as the "birthday of mankind." In ancient India, Egypt, Rome and Greece, the seven day week was standard. Exceptions are few and far between. • Science has also learned that one of our most basic biological cycles is tied to the seven day week. Researchers found measurable impairments in subjects who were denied one out of seven days for rest. They also found that no amount of experimental coaxing could change this built in seven day cycle to six or eight days. • Evolutionary researchers admit that they do not know when the seven day week started. But the origin of the seven day week is clearly presented in Scripture. The seven day week shows that the days in Genesis 1 are not make believe, nor are they figurative – they are the revealed truth of God!

It ranks right up there with false gods, murder and adultery (Exodus 20:17). There are too many Christians who believe that they could serve the Lord far better if they won the lottery. They think that if they just had another one of "these" or a little more of "that" they could be far more effective for the Kingdom of God. But this is thinking from hell. Be thankful for what you have and don't complain about what you don't have.

  • 42. "Betzelem - In His Own Image", Dr. Eli Eli.Lizorkin@eteachergroup.com • At the beginning of the Bible we are told that human beings are an honored part of God’s creation. In fact, we are told that God created man in His Own Image! The Hebrew word for image is “tzelem” which is derived from a shorter Hebrew word, “tzel”, meaning “shadow.” Do you see the connection? When the beams of light fall upon anything, a shadow (tzel) appears next to it. According to the Bible, a human being is nothing less than the image (tzelem) of God because in many ways he/she wondrously reflects/shadows God’s perfection and beauty. Another intriguing way in which we can see this connection is reflected in name “Bezalel.” Literally, Bezalel (Betzalel) means “in the shadow of God”. You recall that he was the person appointed by God to create the Tabernacle and all its furnishings (Ex.31). The Tabernacle and everything inside it allowed the Ancient Israelites to approach God in worship. According to the Bible, when a human being worships the God of Heaven and Earth it is as if he or she steps into the very shadow of God, becoming part of it, reflecting God’s perfection and beauty.

One is in college and the other two are a sophomore and senior in high school. It is so easy to give up on them because of their attitudes. Especially the senior. Most of what we read says that they are going through that time of "detaching" and that we should leave them alone. But that's hard, especially when they give us snippy answers to simple questions. • We seem to always be walking on eggshells just to avoid making waves but there are waves anyway. We feel that they are basically great kids involved in youth group and go to church. But somewhere we have failed, and this is a situation that constantly gets us down as parents. Of course, we have prayed about this. Please help!! • ANSWER: • (This response is to the dad.)

Do you think we need to be blaming generational curses for the things that happen to us, certain behavior in our family, etc.? • • • • ANSWER: Most teaching regarding "generational curses" is based on the following scripture: You shall not worship [other gods] or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and fourth generations of those who hate me, —Exodus 20:5To teach that this verse explains why some "Christians" act the way they do is wrong. First, you must consider the whole thought, which becomes obvious in the very next verse: but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. —Exodus 20:6God is saying that the effects of disobedience (in this case, worshiping idols) last for a time but the effects of trusting His Messiah's substitutionary death on the cross are far more extensive—to a "thousand" generations. Therefore the "effect" of sin can be broken by faith in God.

The Wizard of Id has a comic strip where one monk is putting up a sign on the bulletin board in front of his church while a visiting monk watches. The sign read, "Thou shalt not covet." The visiting monk said, "Boy, I wish we had a signboard like that at our church." • • • • • • • • • • We come to an end of our study of the 10 commandments. I hope it has been interesting and informative for you. It has for me. The last of the 10 would seem to be the least threatening, the less dangerous or destructive. Simply stated it says, "You shall not covet." Many of you may think, "That one doesn't bother me." Or, "Even if I covet what's the big deal? Who's hurt by it?" Well, the Bible clearly says it is wrong to covet. One good definition that I heard for coveting is: "The uncontrolled desire to acquire." We're not talking about an ordinary desire to have things. Material possessions by themselves are neutral. The bigger issue today is how we can be content without desiring things uncontrollably. Let's read the verse. God gives us three categories here. It is wrong to desire: (1) Your neighbor's property (house), Ahab took Nabob's vineyard (2) Your neighbor's people (wife, male or female servant), King David (3) Your neighbor's possessions (ox, donkey, nor anything). Somebody desired my chain saw so they took it from my garage. We will look at two kinds of hearts today. The Coveting heart and the Contented heart. THE COVETING HEART The coveting heart is not innocent. In God's eyes, it is corrupt and it is corrosive. A. Corrupt 1. It Disregards the Laws of God That it is corrupt is obvious because God would not have included it in the list of The Ten Big Ones. Just because it is last doesn't mean it is least. I think it has an effect on all the other ten. For instance: (1) How many of you have put money and possessions ahead of God? - V.3 (2) How many have bowed at the altars of materialism and greed while refusing to bow at the altar of the Lord? - Vs. 4-6 (3) Many have blasphemed the name of the Lord in efforts to acquire things. Disregarding God's Word to obtain what you want in life is blaspheming. - V. 7 (4) Have you ever desecrated the Lord's day to make money? - Vs.9-11 (5) Many parents are treated poorly and cast aside by children too busy making money to be bothered with them. - V.12 (6) Many people are dead today because somebody wanted something that belonged to them. - V.13 (7) Lot's of marriages are torn apart because of as one preacher said, "He was so caught up in earning his salt, he neglected his sugar!" A coveting heart is behind adultery. Coveting and lust are first cousins. - V.14 (8) It goes without saying that stealing is the end result of a covetous spirit that has gone too far. - V.15 (9) Often, people will lie about another person, gossip about them because they are envious and covetous of that person's life. - V.16 Listen to Paul: Romans 7:7-8 7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, "You shall not covet." 8 But sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, produced in me all manner of evil desire. For apart from the law sin was dead. NKJV 2. It Denies the Lordship of Christ Philippians 4:19 19 And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. NKJV

By Hershel Shanks In 1969, barely two years after the 1967 Six-Day War, a team of Israeli archaeologists made an exploratory excavation at the base of one of the numerous sites in the Sinai Peninsula proposed as Biblical Mt. There are some differences, but the most important is in the Fourth Commandment’s reasons for the observance of the Sabbath. Surprisingly, the text on the reconstructed stone tablets from Sinai follows Deuteronomy more closely than Exodus. It was difficult for the scholars to resist the obvious conclusion: These were the original Tablets of the Law that Moses destroyed when he came down from the mountain and found the Israelites worshiping the Golden Calf. The scholars agreed that, all things considered, it was best to keep the discovery secret, at least for the time being. The tablets as reconstructed were placed in the university vault and forgotten. Since the Arab Spring and the revolution in Egypt, the new Egyptian government has learned of this archaeological discovery and made a formal demand for the return to Egypt of the two Tablets of the Law, claiming that they were recovered in territory under the sovereignty of Egypt. There can be no doubt is where they were found. Is Israel obligated to return them under international law if found in an excavation in the Sinai? In law school this is called a hypothetical; that is, a hypothetical case that tests the application of a legal rule. In this instance: Would Israel be obligated to turn over to Egypt the original Tablets of the Law if they had been discovered in Sinai? The rule generally recognized (like many rules of international law, it has not been formally “enacted” or enunciated in haec verba) is that archaeological objects, especially recently recovered objects, belong to the nation with sovereignty over the place where the object was found unless it was removed legally. In this case, modern Egypt occupies largely the same space occupied by ancient Egypt, but it has no cultural relationship to ancient Egypt. Egyptians don’t speak the same language (ancient Egyptians spoke Egyptian; most modern Egyptians speak Arabic), they don’t use the same writing system (hieroglyphic vs. the Arabic alphabet), don’t worship the same gods, don’t revere the same texts, and there is no resonance of ancient Egyptian culture in modern Egyptian culture. The opposite, of course, is true of Israel. If the outcome of this case is not clear, at least it should be discussed. As far as I can tell, it is not. The only cases that are discussed involve demands by Egypt, Greece, Italy, Turkey and perhaps a few other countries for the return of objects from Western, mostly American, museums and universities. The “culture” element may well come up in contexts other than our hypothetical. The caves near Qumran where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found lie just within the West Bank. The Palestinians claim the scrolls as part of their heritage. (So does Jordan, which claimed this area when the scrolls were found.) Indeed, much of Israel today occupies ancient Philistia, rather than ancient Israel. Much of Biblical Israel lies in the West Bank. Other questions involve not what Israel has that others could claim but what Israel could claim from others. For instance, the Gezer Calendar, which is a contender for the oldest Hebrew inscription,b was found in the early 20th century at Tel Gezer, a site that lies about halfway between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. This treasure can be seen only in the Istanbul Archaeological Museum. The famous Siloam Inscription found in Hezekiah’s tunnel in Jerusalem was also discovered under Ottoman control and taken to Constantinople; it, too, now resides in the Istanbul Archaeological Museum. Long ago, I pleaded with the Turkish government to return the Siloam Inscription to Jerusalem.c I did not even get a response. The inscription’s importance to Turkey is reflected in the fact that at that time the inscription was not displayed in a public gallery. Later, I urged the Turkish embassy to consider a short-term loan in connection with the observance of Jerusalem’s 3,000th anniversary in 1996. Same response—no response. Ironically enough, as I write, the Turkish government has refused to lend objects to the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London unless they return disputed artifacts. Adding irony to irony, some of the objects Turkey refused to lend the Met were excavated in Saudi Arabia and were taken to Turkey in Ottoman times.1 I confess it is hard to imagine Israel’s giving up the Dead Sea Scrolls. On the other hand, it is hard to imagine the Jordanians giving up one of the most important and intriguing of the Dead Sea Scrolls, which is exhibited in the Amman archaeological museum—the Copper Scroll, which probably records the location of hidden treasures from the Jerusalem Temple. There are no easy answers to these questions. http://members.bib-arch.org/search.asp?PubID=BSBA&Volume=38&Issue=5&ArticleID=7&UserID=0&
  • 61. Romans 1:30 Proverbs 1:8; 13:1; 30:17 Matthew 26:39 Luke 2:51 2 Timothy 3:2 Jeremiah 35:18-19 Ephesians 6:1-3 Exodus 20:12, Honor Father And Mother • Question: "What does it mean to honor my father and mother?" Answer: Honoring your father and mother is being respectful in word and action and having an inward attitude of esteem for their position. The Greek word for honor means “to revere, prize, and value.” Honor is giving respect not only for merit but also for rank. For example, some Americans may disagree with the President’s decisions, but they should still respect his position as leader of their country. Similarly, children of all ages should honor their parents, regardless of whether or not their parents “deserve” honor. God exhorts us to honor father and mother. He values honoring parents enough to include it in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:12) and again in the New Testament: “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother which is the first commandment with a promise, so that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth” (Ephesians 6:1-3). Honoring parents is the only command in Scripture that promises long life as a reward. Those who honor their parents are blessed (Jeremiah 35:18-19). In contrast, those with a “depraved mind” and those who exhibit ungodliness in the last days are characterized by disobedience to parents (Romans 1:30; 2 Timothy 3:2). Solomon, the wisest man, urged children to respect their parents (Proverbs 1:8; 13:1; 30:17). Although we may no longer be directly under their authority, we cannot outgrow God’s command to honor our parents. Even Jesus, God the Son, submitted Himself to both His earthly parents (Luke 2:51) and His heavenly Father (Matthew 26:39). Following Christ’s example, we should treat our parents the way we would reverentially approach our heavenly Father (Hebrews 12:9; Malachi 1:6). Obviously, we are commanded to honor our parents, but how? Honor them with both actions and attitudes (Mark 7:6). Honor their unspoken as well as spoken wishes. “A wise son heeds his father's instruction, but a mocker does not listen to rebuke” (Proverbs 13:1). In Matthew 15:3-9, Jesus reminded the Pharisees of the command of God to honor their father and mother. They were obeying the letter of the law, but they had added their own traditions that essentially overruled it. While they honored their parents in word, their actions proved their real motive. Honor is more than lip service. The word “honor” in this passage is a verb and, as such, demands a right action. We should seek to honor our parents in much the same way that we strive to bring glory to God—in our thoughts, words, and actions. For a young child, obeying parents goes hand in hand with honoring them. That includes listening, heeding, and submitting to their authority. After children mature, the obedience that they learned as children will serve them well in honoring other authorities such as government, police, and employers. While we are required to honor parents, that doesn’t include imitating ungodly ones (Ezekiel 20:18-19). If a parent ever instructs a child to do something that clearly contradicts God’s commands, that child must obey God rather than his/her parents (Acts 5:29). Honor begets honor. God will not honor those who will not obey His command to honor their parents. If we desire to please God and be blessed, we should honor our parents. Honoring is not easy, is not always fun, and certainly is not possible in our own strength. But honor is a certain path to our purpose in life—glorifying God. “Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord” (Colossians 3:20). • 62. Ex 20, Deut 5 Eph 6:1-3, HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER • Q&A • Question: My father abused my siblings and me...for years. Recently, he demanded that we come to his house to receive an early part of our inheritance. We would no longer be considered his children if we did not show up and obey his decree. His "gift" had some specific conditions that I believed were wrong. Due to these conditions, I and several other siblings could not "obey" and declined or returned the money. This made him furious. How do I honor this man...who has shown no evidence of repentance at all...and when I am no longer his child, by his own vow? How do I address him as "father" or "dad" ever again? • • • Response: Paul wrote, "Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth" (Eph 6:1-3). So, first, children are to "obey" their parents "in the Lord." We may not always have godly parents, and some of their commands may contradict the revealed will of the Lord. Paul writes in Romans 13:1, "Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God." Our first obligation is to obey the Lord, regardless of our age. Second, we are told to "honor thy father and mother...." Some may think that to "honor" our father or mother means to obey every demand they may make. This isn't true. Again, our first priority is the express will of God, and when our earthly parents stand in opposition to this, we certainly cannot disobey the Lord. There is a difference between a child in submission to their parents and adults who no longer live with their parents. "Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh" (Gn 2:24). In our view, adult children are accountable first to the Lord and are no longer under the direct authority of their parents. What does it mean to "honor" someone? In 1 Peter 2:17 we are told, "Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king." Certainly "honoring" all men doesn't include agreeing to or obeying every demand they may make. It does mean, however, to be respectful: "Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing" (1 Pt 3:9). • What should be our response before authorities? When Paul was before the "chief priests," the High Priest commanded one of his aides to strike him (Acts 23:2). Paul replied, "God shall smite thee, thou whited wall..." (Acts 23:3). • Regardless of the unjustness of his "trial," when the authority of the high priest was pointed out (v. 4), Paul's reply (v. 5) was, "I wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people." Paul "reviled not again" (1 Pt 2:23). • When Daniel's three friends appeared before Nebuchadnezzar, they answered firmly, but without railing, "If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us....But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up" (Dn 3:17-18). God did intervene and the king "promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, in the province of Babylon" (v. 30). • You ask how you can "address him as 'father' or 'dad' ever again." Shouldn't the question be "how do I respond according to the Scriptures?" • Despite what your father has said or done, he remains your father. Neither you nor he can change that fact. If his "decree," however, means there will be no further contact with him, that rests with the Lord. Who knows how the Lord may intervene as He did for Daniel's three friends? Your godly conduct may be used of the Lord to convict, bring repentance, and change the heart of your father. And of course, you should never cease to pray for him.
