Music video analysis - 30 Seconds to Mars "The Kill"
1. INTENTIONS To promote the single and generate interest in it.
Itʼs a very well put together video and has
interesting effects on the interaction of the doubles.
Whilst also serving the narrative, these well
executed effects can be a talking point, something
audiences tell friends about.
REPRESENTATION OF THE
ARTIST
The band are shown as being gothic and trendy
rock stars. They wear all black with dark rock star
hair, and some have painted nails. They are
represented as having tormented and tortured
souls, mainly because the whole video is about
them sliding into madness. They are shown as dark
and introspective and the kind of people who like
films like “The Shining”
They are shown as being passionate and angry,
shouting out lyrics and playing instruments with
gusto.
They are still shown to be relatable, in the opening
moments theyʼre just chatting to each other like
normal friends and they say the reason they came
to the house was to relax and get away from the
fame.
MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS
Artist: 30 Seconds to Mars
Track Name: The Kill
Genre of song: Rock (a bit alternative)
Director: Jared Leto
Format: 5:36 - Location based narrative (Although an abstract narrative) with some performance intercut in.
2. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN
MUSIC AND VISUALS
The editing is interesting in that it isnʼt exactly timed
to the music always. Whilst the song is fast paced
the video and the action is often quite slowly.
However certain dramatic points are timed to beats
of the music, for example the reveal of the second
Jared.
The video also uses a flicker effect, with the screen
cutting between two images at high speed, to
match the fastest point of the song which occurs in
the chorus.
The video takes advantage of the pauses and
breaks in the song, lengthening them out slightly to
put narrative scenes in them.
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN
LYRICS AND VISUALS
The lyrics are often about self loathing and wanting
to die; “I know now, this is who I really am inside”
The video gives a literal interpretation of this by
having members of the band finding themselves in
the hotel. These doubles are shown as being
negative; Jaredʼs double is acting sinister and evil
and wearing a black suit.
In the dining hall at the end all the the people there
are in pairs, twins, carrying on this double motif
taken from the lyrics.

3. VOYEURISM (NOTION OF
LOOKING)
There are many private scenes; when one band
member kisses a woman after finding her in one of
the rooms, and when another band member peeks
into a room and sees himself and a man dressed in
a bear costume. This bear shot is even shot from
outside in a way that highlights the audience is on
the outside looking in.
The whole video feels like the audience is peeking
in on something we shouldnʼt, something very
private. Inside the bands mind as they slowly go
insane.
INTERTEXTUALITY Strongly and obvious influenced by the Kubrick film
“The Shining”. Informs the audience the song will
be dark and brutal, with the music video inspired by
a horror. It also links in with the themes of the song,
madness and facing yourself and your dark side.
“The Shining” is quite a dark an intelligent film, so
the producers are appealing to the kind of audience
who will get the references, who have seen the
film.
Theres also a fun playfulness in the references, like
the artists and producers are paying homage to a
favorite film.

4. TYPICAL OF GENRE It has a typical dark colour scheme for this sort of
gothic rock video; mainly black with a some dark
dirty olive whites, like aging paper.
The video is very gothic in itʼs style, set in a high
class hotel and with the artists wearing dark smart
suits. Itʼs that blend of smart and posh with dark
lighting and colours that creates the “gothic” look.

WHO IS THE TARGET
AUDIENCE
The first target audience is 30 Seconds to Mars
fans, people who follow the band.
These would be audiences who like dark visuals
and story telling, probably who are also fans of
“The Shining”.
WHY WOULD THIS APPEAL TO
TARGET AUDIENCE
This would appeal to fans as it features the band
quite actively in the video. Fans who want to
connect and engage with the audience will like the
video, as it also gives the impression that theyʼre
seeing the bands personally pain, seeing theyʼre
soul.
