Editor's Notes

  • #2Ā Hello and welcome everyone to my confirmation practice presentation. I hope I would not bore you like last time.
  • #3Ā Sennett is his book the craftsman refered to humans as homo fabers. We all love to create, collect and archive material artifacts. This human fascination towards materiality has been studied in social sciences as well as recently in HCI. Although there is no proper justification or reason why. But humans fascinates physical medium. That is the reason why digital photos get printed and hung on the wall. Let us articulate where materiality is currently used.
  • #4Ā The first use of materiality is to create an autotopography. Is the terms coined by Gonzalez which mean arrangement of physical things as an external expression of self. Miller argues that humans like to surround themselves with objects that denotes certain parts of their life. It could be past events, achievements and crafts. From the choice of the color to the arrangement, most humans pay keen interest to display externally their personalities and lifestyle.
  • #5Ā Materiality is also used as rewards, the main reason is the higher visibility in the surrounding and low replication value. For example, Unlike a digital record which can easily be copied shared and modified, material objects feel more unique. Secondly, Anything put on the display becomes a external representation of self and his achievements.
  • #6Ā Material artifacts are used as a tools for reflection and reminiscence. Autotopography serves as a memory landscape for the owner and provides opportunity for storytelling. And miller says humility of things.
  • #7Ā So we know that materiality is used for autotopography, as rewards and as a tool for reminiscence. Humans collect and archive objects that they love and care, and bring memories of the past. I have therefore a dream why not create a world of material artifacts To discover new ways of creating material artifacts through technology that embody self and past activities.
  • #8Ā Let us put our thinking cap on and imagine how it could be done. Let me give u three pointers.
  • #9Ā 1 physical activity, we all know the benefits of physical activity, and physical activity has become an essential part of many people. And they invest lot of their time and effort in becoming physical activity. However the results of the exercise is not easily visible and perceivable by everyone.
  • #10Ā Thankfully with the recent advancements in sensing technology, we have now personal informatics tools that colllect personally relevent info
  • #15Ā Hello and welcome everyone to my confirmation practice presentation. I hope I would not bore you like last time.
