3. Introduction
What is LASER?
• The term "laser" originated as an acronym for
"light amplification by stimulated emission of
radiation".
•An intense beam of coherent monochromatic light,
which emits electromagnetic radiation, stimulated
by emission of photons from excited atoms or
molecules.
4. What is Machining ?
•Machining is any process in which a cutting tool is
used to remove small chips of material from the
workpiece
•The shape of the tool and its penetration into the
work surface, combined with these motions,
produce the desired shape of the resulting work
surface.
5. What is Laser Jet/Beam Machining
• LBM is a non-conventional Machining
manufacturing process, a form of machining, in
which a laser is directed towards the work piece
for machining.
• This machining processes transport photon
energy into the target material in the form of
thermal or photochemical energy and remove
material by melting or by direct
vaporization/ablation.
17. Advantages:
• It is faster than non-traditional process.
• It has high accuracy and precision.
• Reduce in warping of material during the process.
• Fully automated.
18. Disadvantages:
• Requires trained professionals.
• High initial cost and maintainance.
• Electricity consumption is high.
• Not suitable for heat sensitive material.
