Marjorie Hogarth arrived at Virgilio Valdivia in October 2018 and introduced herself to the students using a PowerPoint presentation about her hometown in Scotland. Since then, she has led various English language and cultural activities with the students, including a conversation club to practice speaking English, games to learn vocabulary like "rock paper scissors", and teaching traditional Scottish songs and dances for St. Andrew's Day. The students have become more confident speaking English and learned about Scottish culture through Marjorie's lessons.
2. ARRIVAL OCTOBER
2018
When I arrived at Virgilio Valdivia in
October 2018, I presented myself to the
pupils of each class. I used a PowerPoint
presentation to show the pupils pictures
from Scotland, my hometown and my
friends and family. The pupils enjoyed
seeing the pictures and had lots of
questions for me. It was a good chance to
get to know each other.
Here I leave you some of the moments we
spent together so far:
3. CONVERSATION CLUB
• We decided to hold a conversation club to
allow pupils to practice their English in a
conversational manner. At conversation club we
discuss a range of topics from hobbies,
holidays, school to favourite films and games.
The pupils have become more confident in
expressing themselves in English. Through the
discussions the pupils learn new vocabulary
and idioms in the English language. At the end
of term, I presented the pupils with certificates
for their good attendance and efforts.

6. ST ANDREW’S DAY
• St Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland and
on November 30th Scottish culture is celebrated.
As part of this day, I introduced the children to
many traditional aspects of Scotland such as
tartan kilts, bagpipe music and foods such as
Haggis and shortbread. The pupils enjoyed
making their own mini tartan designs and
created a wall display for St Andrews. We
watched videos from Scotland of Highland
Dancing and of St Andrew’s Day celebrations.
8. ROBERT BURNS DAY
On the 25th January, the famous Scottish poet Robert Burns is celebrated. As part of
this day, I introduced the pupils to the history of Robert Burns and I recited some of
his famous poems such as ‘ To a moose’ and we listened to the famous song ‘Auld
Lang Syne’ which is sung every new year. I showed the pupils what happens on a
typical Burns night in Scotland through videos of Haggis being prepared and recitals
and afterwards they learned some Scots words and drew pictures to create a wall
