On May 17th 1945, an RAF Avro Lancaster bomber crashed on Lichfield Road in Wednesfield, killing all 7 crew members instantly. The crippled aircraft had been on a routine training flight from Kirkby in Lincolnshire when it began losing altitude and hit overhead power lines, causing it to explode in mid air and leave a 5ft crater in the road. Pieces of the scattered wreckage were found over a two mile area. In 2005, a memorial service was held where relatives of the crew attended and lit candles in memory of their lost loved ones. The exact cause of the crash was never determined.

The Gulf War began in August 1990 when Iraq invaded Kuwait, led by Saddam Hussein. In response, a US-led coalition known as Operation Desert Shield was formed to defend Saudi Arabia. After diplomatic efforts failed, Operation Desert Storm was launched in January 1991 to liberate Kuwait. The air campaign bombed Iraqi targets and within 100 hours, the coalition forces drove Iraqi troops from Kuwait. Iraq agreed to a ceasefire on February 28th, 1991, ending the Gulf War.

On December 7, 1941, Japan launched a surprise attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Over 2,300 Americans were killed in the bombing that destroyed or damaged 19 U.S. naval vessels including eight battleships. The attack forced the U.S. into World War 2 by breaking the backbone of the American Pacific fleet and ending a policy of isolationism. Congress declared war on Japan the day after the "date which will live in infamy".

This mistake has been corrected. Moreover the story about Sergeant Robert W. Zercher and the crew he belonged to was unknown. In the ‘official’ source we consulted we found no more information than: `In spite of many investigations in America the names of these aviators could not be found’. Meanwhile further information has become available – especially internet has proven to be an invaluable asset - and that’s the reason why the story could be reconstructed.

David Jenkins, an experienced aerobatics pilot and member of the Wildcat Aerobatics team, died after crashing his plane during a practice display at Old Buckenham Airfield. Eyewitnesses watched in horror as his plane went into a flat spin and crashed less than 100 meters from the crowd, erupting in flames. 65 Squadron R.F.C. on 23rd April 1918.

..was shot down and killed near Amiens on 21 April 1918. There has been considerable discussion and debate regarding aspects of his career, especially the circumstances of his death. He remains perhaps the most widely known fighter pilot of all time .
Richthofen received a fatal wound just after 11:00 am on 21 April 1918, while flying over Morlancourt Ridge, near the Somme River. 49°56′0.60′′N 2°32′ 43.71′′E
At the time, the Baron had been pursuing (at very low altitude) a Sopwith Camel piloted by a novice Canadian pilot, Lieutenant Wilfrid "Wop" May of No. 209 Squadron, Royal Air Force. In turn, the Baron was spotted and briefly attacked by a Camel piloted by a school friend (and flight commander) of May's, Canadian Captain Arthur "Roy" Brown, who had to dive steeply at very high speed to intervene, and then had to climb steeply to avoid hitting the ground. Richthofen turned to avoid this attack, and then resumed his pursuit of May.
It was almost certainly during this final stage in his pursuit of May that a single .303 bullet hit Richthofen, damaging his heart and lungs so severely that it must have caused a quick death.

The materials held in this collection are related to aviation pioneer James Albert Whitted (1893 – 1923). Born in St. Petersburg, FL, Whitted served as a naval aviator during WWI and ran one of the earliest commercial flight businesses, taking passengers on short plane rides. The collection consists of Whitted's correspondence, certificates, newspaper clippings, airplane designs, flight logs, scrapbooks, photographs, and telegrams documenting his career from 1917 until his death in a plane crash in 1923. The collection was donated to the museum by Whitted's granddaughter and provides insight into his pioneering role in naval aviation and commercial flight in Florida.

Pema Khandu, born on August 21, 1979, is an Indian politician and the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh. He is the son of former Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Dorjee Khandu. Pema Khandu assumed office as the Chief Minister in July 2016, making him one of the youngest Chief Ministers in India at that time.

Lancaster bomber rf124_crash
- 1. Lancaster Bomber RF124 Crash Lichfield Rd, Wednesfield 17th May 1945
- 2. At 5:15pm on 17th May 1945 an RAF Avro Lancaster RF124 bomber from the 630 Squadron crashed on Lichfield Road in Wednesfield. All 7 crew members on board were killed instantly.

- 5. The crippled aircraft had been on a routine training flight from Kirkby in Lincolnshire when it began losing altitude and hit overhead power lines, causing it to explode in mid air. The crash impact left a 5ft crater in the road. Pieces of the bomber were scattered over an area of two miles and there was not a single piece of the plane left larger than a table top - even though the aircraft had a wingspan of 102 feet and was 70 feet long. Eye witnesses also reported that human remains were scattered across the crash site.
- 6. Remains of the cockpit and engines were buried in the crater and traffic between Wednesfield & Bloxwich was diverted for several days until the wreckage was removed and road was repaired. Today there are no visible signs of the crash site.
- 8. The chimney of Moat House Farm was knocked off by the plane and four bricklayers who were working on the road were thrown to the ground by the blast and had to be treated for shock. After losing control of the plane and with the centre of Wednesfield only seconds away (by air), the crew searched for a field to crash land in but fell just short, crashing onto the Lichfield Road itself. The flight crew were later praised for their efforts in making sure the aircraft did not hit nearby houses as it went down. It is thought they avoided landing on several nearby fields as lots of children were out playing.
- 10. The exact cause of the crash was never found because the damage to the aircraft was so bad. It is thought that the bomber lost power to one or more of it’s engines, leaving it unable to fly. Whilst trying to crash land in the field it hit the power lines which caused the fatal explosion.
