On September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists hijacked 4 commercial airplanes and crashed two of them into the World Trade Center towers and another into the Pentagon. A total of 2,606 people died in the World Trade Center towers when American Airlines flights crashed into each tower. Later that day, passengers on another hijacked flight, believing it was headed for the White House, fought the hijackers and crashed the plane in a field, thwarting their attack. In total, 412 first responders including firefighters, police officers, and paramedics died trying to rescue people and fight fires at the attack sites.
