The Lakeland Skating Club
• All skaters and coaches at Lakeland are members of the
Lakeland Skating Club, which offers skating sessions, a
US Figure Skating test structure, test sessions with
certified USFS judges, ice shows, access to off-ice
conditioning and dance programs for skaters and annual
events.
• See www.lakelandskatingclub.com
• See www.USFigureSkating.org
Getting a Coach
• At Basic Skills Level 6 or above (of 8 levels), your skater may begin
lessons with a private coach.
• The lessons will both supplement the skills taught in Learn-to-Skate
classes and begin to teach the fundamentals of various skating
disciplines.
• Coaches set new schedules for Summer and Fall/Winter
• Spring and Summer are the best times to begin the process for the next
season
• First, fill out a Lead Sheet, available at the monitor’s booth or upstairs
Figures Skating office
• If you are a Team du Coeur member, turn this in to Heather Blasko’s
mailbox for coordination; if not, turn in to monitor or FS office
• The figure skating director, Hollie Campagna, will then evaluate
your skater and place her/him with an available coach
• The coach will contact you regarding lesson availability and coordination
• Blackout Dates – December through March, due to shows
Coaches
• The professional staff at
LSC are highly-qualified
coaches and members of
the PSA
• It is a team teaching
environment
• You will have one head
coach, and may also have
lessons with other
coaches for specific
disciplines, jumps, etc.
• The head coach will
determine testing and
competition
• Coaches will bill their
students directly
• Each coach has a set rate-
per-hour
• Rates amongst coaches
vary based on experience
and qualifications
Skating Disciplines
The Disciplines:
• Moves-in-the-Field
• Freestyle
• Pairs
• Dance
• Synchronized Skating
• Figures
Skating Disciplines
• Where to begin with
Private Lessons?
• USFS Test Structure
Moves-in-the-Field
• "Moves" is a technical
discipline, designed to help
skaters improve their execution
of the basic moves of skating.
• Edgework, turns, stroking,
body control and extension are
emphasized, mostly done with
"power" as a primary focus.
• All skaters will begin with the
Pre-Preliminary Moves test.
• 1 – 2 lessons of 15 minutes
each per week
Skating Disciplines
Freestyle
• Jumps, spins and
programs skated to music
• 1 – 2 freestyle lessons per
week may be added
• Begins with Pre-
Preliminary Freestyle test
• First step to beginning
singles competition
Skating Disciplines
Synchronized Skating
• Team du Coeur
represents the LSC
• Offers 6 levels of team
competition with
testing requirements
• Members must be
enrolled in lessons and
be testing Moves and

USFS Test Structure
• The USFS test structure governs the levels at which
skaters compete in all disciplines
• Judged tests are conducted by certified USFS judges at a
USFS sanctioned test session by a skating club
• Results are tracked by USFS
• Your skater’s coach will let you know when your skater is
ready to test
• Test sessions are held quarterly at Lakeland; other rinks
also offer test sessions that your coach may consider
Tests & Synchro
• Synchro has age maximums, or majorities, for each level
• Higher divisions have minimum test level requirements
• Age is not the major factor in disciplines outside of synchro;
skaters compete at test level in singles
• Synchro uses all disciplines of figure skating to create a
program, so ice dance and off-ice dance are useful additions
• A Juvenile synchro team ALL must be age 12 & under and all
skaters must have passed the Preliminary Moves Test (the
second of the series), according to the USFSA
• Synchro teams that compete in divisions eligible for the
National Championships have higher test level requirements
and younger skaters

Tests & Synchro
• If your skater would like to move to a higher level
synchro team at tryouts, testing will be an important
factor
• It’s important to talk to your coach about how to reach a
testing goal, and to determine how often your skater
should PRACTICE to achieve a particular test within a
certain timeframe
• Practice –without lessons – is essential. At least a 2:1
ratio of practice to lessons needs to be in place
Competition
• In addition to synchronized team competitions, skaters in
private lessons may want to compete in Singles
• There are local competitions throughout the year which
LSC coaches attend
• There are various disciplines of competition, but freestyle
is the main event
Recommended Skating
Level Guidelines
• Guidelines as to how many lessons and ice sessions
skaters should be completing in order to make successful
progression through each skating level are available.
• In order to make substantial progress and make the best
use of your time and money, it is recommended that you
skate an additional session of practice time for each 15
minutes of lesson time you have with a coach.
