Rain gardens
Rain garden are lower areas in the
landscape that allow rain water
runoff to be absorbed into the
ground. A rain garden looks just
like any cultivated garden and may
attract birds, butterflies and wild
flowers. Rain gardens in cities
serve a double purpose: they reduce
the water load on the sewer
system in case of heavy rains and
serve as green havens for animals
and humans. Rain gardens can be
used everywhere human structures
such as asphalt and pavement
prevent infiltration, and were
vegetation can be planted. It is a
flexible tool to store water and to
create a more diverse landscape
in the city. An extra benefit is that
polluted surface water will be
purified to some extend when it
infiltrates the filter media.

To achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals, we must transition away from a linear "take-make-waste" economic model to a more circular model where waste is designed out of the system. A circular economy aims to keep resources in use for as long as possible through reuse, repair, remanufacturing, and recycling. This requires redesigning products and infrastructure for durability, reuse, and recyclability. Transitioning to a circular economy would benefit both the environment and the economy by optimizing resource use. However, achieving a circular economy globally will require international cooperation as environmental challenges cross borders.

It makes three key points: 1) Buildings are a major contributor to carbon emissions and energy consumption, accounting for over 40% of final energy use in Europe. Sustainable buildings can help reduce this impact. 2) Sustainable buildings are designed to minimize environmental damage and maximize the use of renewable energy. They aim to have low energy needs and carbon footprints. 3) Several case studies and projects are highlighted that demonstrate how sustainable building design principles have been applied to significantly reduce the energy and carbon footprints of new and existing buildings.

This document provides a summary of a report on designing a pilot daylighting project for Ågadeparken in Copenhagen, Denmark. The report was created by a group of students for their sponsor, Miljøpunkt Nørrebro, an environmental organization. The students gathered public opinions on green spaces through surveys and interviews. They researched successful case studies and interviewed experts to inform the design of their pilot project. The report includes the student's design recommendations for Ågadeparken, which incorporate public feedback favoring natural and multifunctional green spaces. The students conclude that a pilot project could help gain support for Miljøpunkt Nørrebro's larger proposal to daylight the buried Ladegårdsåen

Towards efficient use of water resources in Europe

This report from the European Environment Agency discusses improving water resource efficiency in Europe. It notes that while water quality has increased, many areas still face over-exploited water resources. Measures to improve efficiency can help maximize benefits from scarce water, but increased consumption must not offset gains to truly relieve pressure on ecosystems. The report advocates a dual focus on innovative efficiency tools and ensuring use remains within environmental sustainability boundaries as defined by the Water Framework Directive. It highlights efficient irrigation, wastewater reuse, and industrial process changes as promising, and emphasizes managing trade-offs between water and energy sectors to achieve overall resource efficiency. Proper implementation of existing water laws also remains important to support the Water Framework Directive's goals.

Dr. Dietrich Bartelt of DB Sediments presented on the issue of sediment management in rivers and reservoirs. He discussed how sedimentation is reducing global water storage capacity and causing problems both upstream where sediment accumulates in reservoirs as well as downstream where sediment is deficient. Bartelt proposed a new method called ConSedTrans that provides for continuous sediment transfer to balance sediment flows and address these issues in a sustainable way.

The project aimed to develop spatial strategies to minimize greenhouse gas emissions through an urban planning case study. It analyzed energy use and emissions in Rotterdam, focusing on the Pendrecht neighborhood. The project identified six spatial values related to energy use in housing and transportation: framework of movement, provision of transport alternatives, land-use characteristics, housing density, housing quality, and use of renewable energy. It used these six values to inform the development of implementing measures for an urban renewal plan in Pendrecht to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through improvements to transportation options and housing.

There are the following global challenges: • lack of energy • lack of fresh water • environmental problem • saving the climate and life on the planet The existing technology does not allow to avoid the potential disaster in 2050-2100. Suggested technology (Air Hydro Electric Station, Artificial Hydro Power) is perhaps the only one way that allows to avoid this. Water Cycle is the most powerful process in Nature – about 1/4 of Sun’s Energy. Since the annual precipitation is about 1 m of rainfall, it matches a huge power ~ 800 TW that is more than 60 times greater than all the current needs of humanity and more than 400 times greater than all electrical power stations. Why the usual Hydro power gives so little from Water Cycle power? Because the flow of all rivers is 11 times less than all precipitation and all rivers power is 200 times less than Cloud Power. How to avoid this power loss? • Collect water in place where it condenses really, i.e. directly in clouds • Use all possible hydro power head in any place of land or ocean We suggest the technology for realization this idea – Air HES, that allows to get water directly from clouds (by using a fog collector technology) in order to create artificial Hydro Power anywhere worldwide. Major trend is the transition to renewable energy sources. It then becomes clear that resources are only sufficient for sun and (possibly) wind. Traditional hydro power does not have enough resources. However, the use of cloud energy changes this assessment. Principally it results from economics. All three methods of conversion (PV, wind, clouds) are the same order of magnitude of the energy density (~ 100 W/m2) , but only for Air HES all this energy with virtually no loss can be merged into one point (pipe/turbine), making part of the proportional m2 far cheaper than other alternatives. This implies ROI > 1000% that allows quickly rebuild the energetics and successfully pass the collapse of energy & climate in 2050.

Six experimental green roofs were monitored over two years and compared to a control gravel roof. Aquesta nova entitat de dret públic aglutinarà la protecció, la planificació, la gestió, la restauració, la millora i l'estudi del medi natural de Catalunya, tant en l'àmbit continental com marí. Per constituir, de manera efectiva, aquest nou ens cal aprovar-ne els estatuts. Ara el Govern de la Generalitat de Catalunya els ha començat a redactar i ha obert un procés de participació ciutadana per debatre aspectes clau de la governança i el desplegament territorial de la futura Agència. En aquesta sessió informativa, que actua de tret de sortida del procés participatiu, s'explica: - El procés de creació de l'Agència de la Natura de Catalunya i de redacció dels seus estatuts. - Els diversos aspectes que regularan els estatus. - Els grups de treball i els diversos processos de participació que intervenen en la redacció dels estatuts. - El procés de participació externa: objectius, destinataris i les diverses vies per participar. - Els eixos de debat que es tractaran en el procés de participació externa. 6. Rain gardens to manage extreme rainfall events (Trondheim, Norway) Rain gardens Rain garden are lower areas in the landscape that allow rain water runoff to be absorbed into the ground. A rain garden looks just like any cultivated garden and may attract birds, butterflies and wild flowers. Rain gardens in cities serve a double purpose: they reduce the water load on the sewer system in case of heavy rains and serve as green havens for animals and humans. Rain gardens can be used everywhere human structures such as asphalt and pavement prevent infiltration, and were vegetation can be planted. It is a flexible tool to store water and to create a more diverse landscape in the city. An extra benefit is that polluted surface water will be purified to some extend when it infiltrates the filter media.
