1. Discuss the Components of Nursing Informatics
Components of Nursing informatics is a specialty that integrates the nursing science, computer
science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge,
and wisdom into the nursing practice. Informatics is a combination of nursing science,
information science and computer science. Nursing is a field where patient centered care is one
of the top priorities. Nurses use technology to enhance care, communication technology to
coordinate care, data management to improve and analyze outcomes of care, information for
evidence-based practice, and the use of electronic records to improve care. Overall, nursing is a
field where many different areas overlap to. Nurses need to possess technical skills such as how
to use a blood pressure cuff and how to give injections, interpersonal skills to interact with
patients and other members of the health care staff, cognitive skills to assess and interpret data
from the patient and lastly make a decisionon how to help the patient. This definition of nursing
science focuses on the ethical applicationof knowledge acquired through education, research,
and practice to provide services and interventions to patients to maintain, enhance or restore
their health and acquire, process, generate, and disseminate nursing knowledge to advance the
nursing profession. All of these things center on the management of data. Information is just data
and knowledge is interpreting and understanding the data that is presented before us.
Knowledge allows nurses to arrive at a certain decisionor to complete a task. When a patient’s
vital signs are abnormal and they begin to experience pain, the information presented and
nursing knowledge allows a nurse to know what action to take first and where the highest priority
of action lies. Nurses are constantly bombarded with pieces of information that result in a
“product” such as knowledge. Through education and research the nursing profession can
advance patient centered care and advance the nursing profession as a whole. Information
science can be thought of as the science of information, studying the applicationand usage of
information and knowledge in organizations and the interface or interaction between people,
organizations, and information systems. Healthcare organizations are developing information
systems to handle the needs of entire organizations. Using these systems gives organizations,
health care workers, and health care recipients many benefits. Overall, Information science is
constantly evolving and consists of linking people and technology.
