The document compares the Scottsboro Trials of the 1930s and the Tom Robinson Trial from Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird. Both involved charges of rape made by white women against African American men in Alabama. In both cases, the poor white status of the accusers and attitudes about race complicated fair trials. A central figure in defending the African American men's rights was a heroic judge in the Scottsboro Trials and Atticus Finch in the Tom Robinson Trial. Evidence was ignored in reaching guilty verdicts for the African American defendants in both cases.
The Scottsboro Boys case arose in 1931 when 9 black youths ranging from 13 to 21 years old were accused of raping two white women on a train in Alabama. They were given a highly unfair trial where the public defender spent little time preparing and some accounts said he was drunk. Despite later evidence that no rape occurred, including recanting by one of the women, the boys were convicted at two trials. Over time, all but one were eventually paroled or pardoned as their convictions were seen as a gross travesty of justice. The case highlighted issues of racial injustice in the deep South during this period.
