Ethnicity
Cubans are a multi-ethnic people descended primarily from Spanish, African, and Chinese ancestors. The majority of Cubans are Christian, though Santeria, a blend of Catholicism and Yoruba religions, is also widely practiced. Cuban culture reflects its European, African, and American influences, seen especially in music like son, bolero, rumba, and mambo. The Spanish language is universally spoken, though some Cuban Americans use English. Cubans live in homes, huts, and apartments and face challenges like food shortages that they try to address through black market supplementation of government rations.
History of salsa music
Salsa originated from the contradanza dance that was brought from France to Spain and then to Cuba, where it mixed with African and indigenous traditions to form Afro-Cuban music. In the late 19th century, independence movements in Latin American countries and the Spanish American War led to migration between islands and to the US. In the 1940s-1950s, Cuban and Caribbean music mixed with jazz in New York, Miami, and Colombia, giving rise to mambo, cha-cha-cha, and other genres. Artists in the 1970s then combined these Latin genres with other influences to create the genre known as salsa.

Mexico played an important role in Spain's conquest of the Philippines in 1565. Legaspi and Urdaneta, though Spanish, lived in Mexico and received troops, missionaries, and supplies from Mexico to succeed in colonizing the Philippines. From 1565 to 1821, the Philippines was ruled from Mexico by the Mexican viceroy, who appointed governors and officials. Mexicans came to live and work in the Philippines, and Filipinos went to Mexico. The galleon trade between Mexico and the Philippines linked and enriched the colonies until 1815. Both cultures influenced each other through the exchange of plants, animals, industries, dress, music, dances, traditions, and language.

Costa Rican History
Costa Rica was first explored by Columbus in 1502 and inhabited by nearly 400,000 native Indians. The Spanish established settlements on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts in the 16th century, bringing slaves and confiscating gold. Over time, European settlers divided the best agricultural lands among themselves while obtaining food from native populations, exposing them to diseases. By the late 1600s, farms were sold off and divided into smaller plots, establishing cities like Heredia, San Jose, and Alajuela. Today, Costa Rica has a stable, democratic government and tourism-based economy.

Our spanish heritage
Spain ruled the Philippines for over 300 years, from 1565-1898, imposing Spanish culture, religion, language, and customs. The greatest Spanish legacy was Christianity, specifically Catholicism. Spain also introduced new foods like wheat, potatoes, cocoa, and coffee. Filipinos adopted Spanish styles of eating, using utensils, and drinking wine. For 250 years after colonization began, the Philippines was governed by the Viceroy of Mexico, resulting in strong cultural links between the two Spanish colonies, including the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade route and the introduction of Mexican words into Tagalog.
